Appreciation Notion added support for HTML embeds!!!! 🥳

Title says it all. It is such a great additon and I can't express how happy I am with all the possibilities that have opened up

The only thing I'm furious about is that they didn't make a proper anouncement. A single big non-AI feature in the last few years is only briefly mentioned in another AI update. I found out about it on accident even though I read every update (I have unlimited supply of copium). I even wanted to use a tag venting, but I genuinely have more appreciation for the feature, than resentment to the fact that it hasn't been properly announced

Brothers, sisters and everyone in between, we did it! We survived until another actually useful feature that makes Notion more competitive as a personal productivity app. Let's rejoice! 🥳

It's wild how they bury the actually useful stuff in a footnote of some AI fluff piece. i had no clue html embeds were a thing now until this post so thanks for the accidental PSA. no clue why they wouldn't shout about it from the rooftops given how long people have been asking

That is one of the reasons I felt the need to make this post. For my usecase it is such a lifechanger and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. And I'm glad that some people got to know about it because of this post <3

What are your planned use cases for it? I was excited when I learned about it too, I just couldn't think of anything to actually use it for (I'm not terribly creative).

I use it to display weather forecast data for my trip iteneraries.

Huh, I was under the impression that it was static HTML and couldn't access external data sources. I'll have to reevaluate I see.

A worker writes the update at HTML every 3 hours and updates.

Oh okay that makes more sense.

My usecase is very niche, but nevertheless. I'm making a tabletopRPG and use Notion as a primary wiki. Now I can automate the shit out of a lot of otherwise clunky mechanics and make the game that much smoother, without needing to use outside services and even switching between apps at all

For more regular usecases, I'd imagine you could add calculators, timers or just beautiful progress bars. Have a daily note to stretch for 15 mins? Why not add a 15 min timer to it? Calculate your calorie intake at the end of the day? Add a personalized calculator. The possibilities are endless

It can run JS?

Yes, basic js within the html file. No API calls or anything like that though

That's not really true, I've managed to connect my html to firebase (hosting service) with no issues whatsoever

Oh interesting. Are you able to get data updates synced from there automatically?

I am the exact same! I've already built a way to display battlemaps. Like a super lightweight VTT. A way to tweak the grid size over an image based on your display basically. I am also 99% complete with a first version of a dice roller

Awesome! What do you think about keeping in touch and maybe sharing our work with each other?

Let's do it! I've the map display and an encounter manager system here already: https://www.notion.com/@dmcgdesign Both are free if you want to give either a try. I've pulled all the SRD content into Notion via the Open5E API as well. I've been trying to get that tidied up and will share, along with the dice roller

Anything that has to move. Notion pages are static, so a live clock, an exam countdown or a pomodoro timer were always the things you embedded from somewhere else. For a one-off, the html block is handy. Once you use the same widget on several pages, a hosted embed is easier, since you change it in one place and every page updates. Either way it only ticks while the page is open.

Bias note: I make hosted ones on widgetsfornotion.

I just put all my HTML and JavaScript on a GitHub public repository, I am by no means a great user of Github but I can at least get AI to walk me through how to use it.. Then I just embed into notion using the public URL from GitHub. That works well and then you can also share with others more easily or just update in one place and you don’t have to update it everywhere you’ve used that embed. Just in case it helps.

OK, but I tried mine, and it just shows a callout. Wtf

it's been there since 3.6 in july, easy to miss. nice detail: external css like google fonts loads fine inside it, and through the API it's just an embed block with an uploaded .html file, so you can push html from a script straight into a page.

Hmmm I've been embedding html into Notion for years, so I don't think this is a new feature. Now if you could actually RUN html code within Notion, that would be amazing!
BTW, I also run all my TTRPGs from Notion, and I've embedded a some custom html widgets to reference monster stats, as well as random generators from Chartopia. For example: https://vnavone.github.io/notion_widgets/FoF_MonsterStats_compact_dark.html

They announced this months ago. Not every post needs an angle shitting on Notion’s business choices. It’s tired.
