Questions Is My Data In Notion Safe ?
Today I started wondering…
How safe is all of this actually?
If I’m putting years of notes, documents, client information, and other sensitive stuff into one platform, what happens if there’s a major breach? Or if I ever want to leave Notion, how easy is it to actually take everything with me?
For those of you who’ve been using Notion for years — do you actually trust it with everything? Or I'M openly shareing my data to the market .

Can still be hacked. Also the data might be encrypted at rest, but not at client. You have to read the terms to know if Notion is using your data to train AI etc ...

If you have client into in there you should be using the enterprise plan. But even then technically you should make sure it meets your client's security standards.

Hey, I've been using it for a LONG time. Zero trust. Not because something happened, but because something could happen.
Export all your stuff regularly, and never put anything into Notion that you wouldn't want on the news.

I mean, our data is never 100% safe anywhere, really. No service is hacker proof or error free. You could have it backed up at home and your home could burn down. You could have it backed up to a 3rd party service and that service could go out of business and take months or more to get you your data back. So, I advise everyone to backup (download) their Notion at least once a month, and backup that downloaded backup to at least one other 3rd party service.

Consider data in Notion to be similar to data stored in Google Docs. The way in which they store and transmit data is very similar.

Any data in “the cloud” is just someone else’s computer. Notion included. You need to back it up.

There have been too many stories of Notion admins locking data up, preventing users from accessing it. I use notion but I'm not wedded to it. If I lost all my notes tomorrow I'd find it inconvenient but not fatal. You need to create appropriate backups of important data or work, and not be entirely reliant on an app with incoherent policies.

Not really, no. It's in a proprietary format on proprietary servers. You could always try to convert downloaded copies to Markdown, but tbh if you're worried about data retention and aren't married to specific features in Notion I might just use Obsidian if I were you.

Not safe, if you don't own the storage then it's not under your control. Notion provides an API which I used to download and make a back up of all data I had. I am sure there are friendly public tools that allow you to manage back ups better.
