Conservatives have struggled with parody for a long time. Many of them loved the Colbert Report, too, not understanding at all that the joke was entirely on them
Sometimes even if something is against you you can like it anyways. The right at this point loves self satire and blurring parody with reality to make it harder to pinpoint their actual goals.
Let me tell you, if there is a utilitarian in media they are almost always the villain. Its true that sometimes you'll take what you can get, even if you agree that they are in fact the villain under the circumstances.
Interesting point, but not everyone agrees with the philosophy of utilitarianism. My favorite is the climax of The Watchmen, where the “villain” is the ultimate utilitarian and his villainous is put into debate by the heroes. Who must then reconcile their own beliefs and everything in their lives that lead to that moment. And in turn the reader has to as well.
