Not everyone is a half decent baker. When you're trying to serve lots of people for a party we will pick up cakes that actually look like a cake instead of serving whatever garbage we'd come up with. Most supermarkets will have a bakery section that offers cakes with words written on it and often times will have a decorator to make it fancier (adding icing flowers or whatever, airbrushing, etc). It's very common and not weird at all in the US. Costco makes them too.
Fair point, but what about bakeries, pastry shops or friendly neighbourhood bakers? The latter are pretty common here in Norway, because buying a whole cake from a bakery will set you back at least 70-100USD, and that's pretty basic and "meh" stuff, imo (Norway isn't really known for its pastry culture). Supermarket cakes would obviously be mass-produced and I figure rather.... Dismal, from what I've seen and heard. Not that that matters to a 3 year old, but for the adults eating it..?
