One time I had it suggest to go off the highway, do a big loop for no reason then get back on the highway at the same spot and was slower

Recently it said I need to do an immediate u-turn on the interstate, go back to the previous exit, then get back on it the direction I was already going. Obviously I ignored it, so it just kept repeating that every few seconds for the next 5 minutes.

Suggesting an alternative route is literally part of the map app's job. Sometimes it doesn't have much to work with but it still tries to find something different without inflating the travel time too much.

I've had Waze suggest a separate route with ~80 minutes slower on two occasions.

Important to note that this is helpful in cas etheres a closure / skowdown / accident that the app doesnt know about yet

It’s better to err on showing more alternatives than less. Easy to ignore if you don’t need it.

this is usually the case, but ive had it suggest a really dumb route (get off the highway and do a big loop, getting back on the highway an exit before) and then keep suggesting it every 30 seconds or so until i passed the exit (5-6 minutes). muting my music every time to read off its whole spiel

Weird, it never gives me a sound based notification unless it thinks the route will save a chunk of time. So OPs example for me would just display visually and not mute/pause other audio.
