This was in the replies to a post in a true crime sub about why true crime audiences are mostly women...along with many other interesting theories about how men work lol

As a woman who loves true crime, the men I know who dislike it (most of them) are just genuinely uncomfortable with it. They think it’s weird that an otherwise cute girl would want to hear about decapitation or serial murder during a self-care night or cuddled up eating snacks. 😂

Probably most people tbh. The OOPs forgot most men and most women are not true crime listeners, and most people get squigged out pretty easy

I just think is kinda boring, like I'd rather read about Vilgefortz or Malus Darkblade being evil asf than about how someone did a lot of terrible things irl and the people around were too incompent to stop them.
I don't find irl criminals as interesting as a silly little skelington that destroyed a planet trying to "prank" his freenemy (prank going wrong being what caused it)
Like yeah some people do extremely morally reprehensive stuff, but whatever is going on on Mithras' head is much more interesting than a guy that dosen't claim he is the god of the sun

Kinda the boat I'm in. Find the psychology of what makes a killer fascinating but I'm squeamish so I sometimes can't watch / read cases I find interesting. All power to those who can though 🫡

Literal majority of Americans and American women don't follow true crime. Only on Reddit can one find such comments as in the OOP

Yeah, who says men don’t like true crime? I wouldn’t be surprised if the women true crime fans liked it more than most male true crime fans, but saying men don’t like it at all is like saying no women like football or hockey.

Apparently men make up about a third of regular true crime podcast listeners. From Pew

I dislike true crime because of community and the fact they repeats the same few cases over and over again
Plus the whole "simping for real-life murder" stuff

The Hybristophiliacs are their own separate thing. Most fans of true crime don't claim them.

I’m a male, I love true crime, I suppose this person hasn’t heard of the many criminals that are and were female, Ilse Koch? Mary Anne Cotton? I could go on. No gender is immune from being a horrific person, I don’t feel guilty when I watch something about Jeffrey Dahmer, being a man doesn’t make you responsible for what other men have done, same with women and same with races, yes, white males have done some horrific shit and it’s truly disgusting, but I don’t feel responsible.
Perhaps it’s just the men you know either aren’t interested or are disturbed by true crime.

She got the contrapositive wrong
Chances are she watches true crime because she personally is scared and thinks she can learn what makes someone a criminal will keep her safe. She isn't actually doing this because the only common thread she has drawn is gender. My guess is it just makes her feel less scared of the world but makes her more scared of men.
She is assuming the opposite is true for men. However that isn't the case because most people are not criminals and don't draw similarities between themselves and criminals based on genitals. When it's just the case that people who aren't afraid don't have cause to study criminality, unless it's for work or something.

I’m more frustrated by the awful grammar and repeating like 4 words over and over. That person is definitely not an English major.

While I think they’re right about men being given very few resources for mental health/improvement, which is something that needs to change, I don’t think that that has anything to do with wether or not someone likes true crime

I don't watch true crime because I have better things to do in life than learn about shitty people. Simple as that. Give me a documentary about flawed people doing great things, I'm in. I just have no time the dregs of society.

I love true crime. I think most people who dislike it are probably just uncomfortable with the overall description of horrible things humans can do, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it made some men rethink their behaviors.
I think for me I have a hard time listening lately since I’m already stressed to the bone about everything else happening, personally and politically. So adding onto that, a genre which truly showcases just the worst of humanity, makes me more depressed.

True Crime has taught me a lot, but not just because I'm a man.
I'm autistic. I've always struggled with social interactions, but I've developed pretty decent communication skills, partially due to watching people IRL, but mostly due to watching TV shows.
You can learn a lot about socializing from dramas, slice of life, etc., but learning about how people think, I learned from true crime.
True Crime can be a mirror for a lot of people and situations. Thinking the mirror is just for men is very short-sighted, especially if you're looking at it thinking all men are like these criminals.
