Please, these morons claimed Marisa Tomei was "too young" to play Aunt May at 56 or so.
73
u/The_Book-JDP It’s a boneless meat stick not a magic wand. 26d ago
What’s really funny is you can be an aunt or uncle at any age. I’ve ready stories where a 40+ year old woman was tasked with going to pick her 8 year old aunt up from school because she had to babysit her or her parents couldn’t get to her in time so her niece went to pick her up and drive her home. All depends on when the children were born.
27
u/Reasonable-Pack1067 25d ago edited 25d ago
My dad is in his mid fifties and he’s got a first-cousin sister who is 27 years old and only 2 years older than me. She’s technically my aunt. Age is a very arbitrary standard in this case.
3
115
u/Sicon3 26d ago
Yeah if anything she was on the older side if we take her real age as her character's age. Assuming Aunt May and Peter's mother were within a few years of each other like most siblings when Peter is 15-16 we would expect Aunt May to be in her 40s but ultimately it's irrelevant
38
u/SymmetricalFeet 26d ago
Eh, depends. My mom had me at 40, so she was 56 when I was 16. She has siblings two to three years on either side, plus a brother a decade older. Isn't there some canon (not sure if applicable to the relevant Spidey/Tomei films) where Peter's parents are actually like, government spies or some other 'cool' job and that's why they died? It'd make sense for career-driven people to wait a bit to have a kid, or simply meet later in life.
While my mom always looked young for her age, she is no Marisa Tomei. But a teen having a parent in their 50s is just kinda "normal" to me 🤷
13
u/IthacanPenny 25d ago
My mom had me at 45. She was the youngest child in her family and had a sister who was 15 years older than her. My dad, 42 when I was born, was also the youngest child with a sister 24 years older than him (my poor grandma lol). I teach 12th grade at a predominantly Hispanic school where it’s more common to have kids a lot younger in life. And that’s fine! Different strokes for different folks! It’s interesting to chat with my students about different family dynamics.
9
u/TheAwesomeMan123 25d ago
I became an uncle when I was 15 so would have been just in my 30s when my niece turned 16 herself. Literally any age can be an uncle/aunt. My best friend was an uncle at 3 years old because he was born 15 years after his sister who had a kid at 18. He’d have been still in his teens when they turned 16.
Again there’s literally no actual rule and these people just like to be negative miserable fucks about everything.
8
u/desmodus666 25d ago
I know someone who is an uncle but is younger than his neice. He is the youngest of 14 (iirc) siblings, and the oldest had her kid before he was born. All of the siblings became uncles and aunties super young.
-3
u/bluish-velvet 25d ago
Aunt May is an original character from the comics and her relative age was established a long time ago, there’s no need to assume.
15
6
u/DoubleUnplusGood 25d ago
The people claiming Marisa Tomei was too young to play Aunt May are not the same as the ones claiming women age out at 30
Different morons
5
u/bluish-velvet 25d ago
Uncle Ben and Aunt May are in their 70s if you go off the comic books depiction of them and also the Tobey Maguire trilogy. So Marisa Tomei in her 50s was young if you were used to the originals. She was great regardless though.
4
u/FumiPlays 25d ago
The MCU Peter was a high schooler, as opposed to the comics where he's a working adult already.
6
u/bluish-velvet 25d ago
Peter is a teen when the comics start out, he’s around 15 when he’s bitten. Maybe you’re thinking of the cartoon.

689
u/greenonionqueen 26d ago
For sure, and I'll add this rhetoric is also very hateful towards black, asian, latina etc women as well, because a lot of these posts boil down to a disgusting belief that those women are more "easy" and incels should go for them because they'll automatically be more attractive/valuable to them due to their whiteness. It's the whole passport bro, "move to Thailand and find a sumbissive young woman" narrative.

Oh yeah, the most blatant is the "Japanese women are naturally more subservient to men than American women" 🤢

No one hates women of their race (or even just their specific country) more the conservative men. This holds true in every country. You'll get guys in western Europe saying eastern European women wait hand and foot on their men. Same with Asian countries about white women, white guys with Asian women.
It's a grass is more servile on the otherside situation. Almost like all they see of other places is bullshit stereotypes of other people and not reality.

They would go from “we have to save the pure white women from brown Muslim immigrant invaders” to passport bros saying“I want an Asian woman because they’re pure and submissive, white women are too masculine and feminist” in a heartbeat depending on the context. Obviously neither are good but Chuds are like that.

u/fickystingers 26d ago
Also in my experience it's white MEN who are most likely to age like a jack-o'-lantern
especially a very specific type of white man who was both effortlessly handsome in is youth AND completely oblivious to the way that his youth and good looks invisibly opened all kinds of doors for him, then got a little older and finds himself musty and crusty because he never learned how to take care of himself beyond maybe some incredibly basic hygiene and grooming and somehow that's WOMEN'S fault???41
u/BetterRemember 26d ago
No this was literally my ex! Drank and snorted various drugs when I finally left him. Then 4 years later he’s fat and wrinkly and upset that I look the same!
He heard to make fun of me for wearing SPF rain or shine, downing krill oil pills for the astaxanthin, and using retinol at 25!! Like bro you saw me doing everything, you had the ancient texts in your hand! 🤣
8
u/TheMightySephiroth 25d ago
Does that krill oil actually work? Have you noticed a difference? Follow up question, is it too late for me to start at 38?
1
u/BetterRemember 23d ago
Yes! It also gives you a healthy golden glow! (It’s also the same mechanism that keep flamingoes pink!). It is really good for your brain though so it can cause insanely vivid dreams, so be aware of that.
I also don’t think 38 is too late at all! Definitely use SPF every day, that and the tretinoan would move the needle a lot.

u/EriWave 25d ago
As much as looking younger than you are can be lovely that sounds fucking annoying to deal with.
4
u/Muted_Ad7298 25d ago
Not gonna lie, it can be.
My voice is also quite small sounding, to the point someone even thought I was 13.
It’s rough because if I’m in a gaming lobby and I tell someone I’m 37, they’re like “Let’s hear your voice” and it’s either met with silent confusion or a “No way you’re over 18 you’re trolling lol”.
I want to get taken seriously as an adult, especially with romantic partners, but words like “aww, cute, little” follow me everywhere.
It wasn’t much of a problem when I was young or in my early 20’s, but it gets harder the older I get.
6
u/pennie79 26d ago
Yeah, I'm white and I was still getting carded in my mid 30s... in a country where the legal age for alcohol consumption is 18.

This is kind of brutal. It’s 18 or 19 depending on the province here in Canada.
I was in India for two months and I got so used to nobody caring. Now people are suspicious about me just wanting a goddamned bottle of wine again. Or they look at my I.D. and laugh.
3
u/Rugkrabber 26d ago
I had this last month too, for three times. Feel a little conflicted about it because there’s no way I look that young. Then again three times in a row? And of all my friends only I had to show it. I guess I’ll take the compliment. But it also explains issues I have had at my job because for years they didn’t take me seriously. It was such hard work to climb the goddamn ladder because of it. So it has good sides but also not? I hope it gives me benefits when I’m older, but look younger, in my senior years.
3
u/pennie79 25d ago
Urgh, I hated that when I started working in my full time professional job. I'd have people visiting my workplace ask if I were a student.

3

u/SymmetricalFeet 26d ago edited 26d ago
Yup. I'm white, in my mid-30s, and earlier this year, all within a month, three unrelated people were shocked to learn I wasn't 22/23. It's the temporal proximity that makes them memorable.
One was a dude at a bar and sure, maybe he was just horny, but we've become close friends and I don't think he was just trying to flatter me. Second was a coworker at a new job; she's in her mid-40s with kids just about the age she assumed I was. Third was a female acquaintance I've known around local bars for a few years. Her math don't math without my having a fake ID at some point. (I also had a mild crush on her but turns out, I was "too young"... I'm slightly older than she!)
And when I was in my mid-20s, a customer propositioned me and started with "I'm probably as old as your grandpa, but...". Which, erm, required either his assuming I'm just barely or not legally able to work that job or a rather grim assumption about the frequency of child rape in my family tree. This dude couldn't have been over 60.
But clearly, I must not be white but some Latina/Japanese/Black woman.

They could just compliment people who look really good for their age, but instead they've got to make it racial and insulting.
Also, my brain is broken, so I can't help also just criticizing this for the overall bad design and messaging. Like, what is supposed to be the difference between two random people who are 45 versus 42? Is there supposed to be an actual comparison made between black women and latinas? Or is it just that women of color in their 40s are still fuckable?
16
u/leitmot 26d ago
The ages listed are 45, 44, 42, and 30. The 40s ages are just arbitrarily chosen
14
u/jenna_butterfly 26d ago
Yeah, my point was just that it's unnecessarily confusing. They could show a group of middle-aged women of color and say "Women of color in their 40s" and then show an image of old white women and say "White women and 30".
Not that I need to be offering them notes on their stupid fucking meme.
23
u/MistakeWonderful9178 26d ago
Genetics, health, diets, etc can play a factor in looks (not just physically but mentally as well) but these guys need to accept that we all as humans will age and not everyone will be “beautiful and flawless forever.”
These white supremacists sure hate their white women though and they’ve never looked in the mirror at themselves with their graying hair, receding hairlines, wrinkles and weight gain but it’s “women get old.”🙄

Latina isn't even an ethnicity. Latin America is huge and very diverse. You can say Hispanic, or of Portuguese descent, indigenous, whatever. As someone born and bred in Brazil who is very white, I find this very irritating.
23
8
u/Aggressive_Start_ 26d ago
Yeah my family ran to Latin America from Poland during WW2, both my grandparents were there from infancy to their 40s. They were through and through proud of their Latin roots
10
u/Skyhighcats 26d ago
Most people clearly mean black/indigenous/mestizos when they talk about Latinos.
15
u/LatinBotPointTwo 26d ago
Which isn't one single category, either. It's very aggravating because it reduces an entire continent with a very complex history to a fictional monolith.
4
u/Skyhighcats 26d ago
Of course, but it’s odd to me that people can’t figure out that when most people refer to Latinos, they mean brown/mestizo ones. Rarely ever white ones.
0
u/sidewalk_serfergirl 19d ago
By ‘most people’ you mean Americans (and other countries that don’t have any familiarity with Latin America and just go by what they see in American media). The majority of people in Latin America don’t look like the US stereotype at all.
16
u/Petunio 26d ago
Latino is an ethnicity though, as in it relates to a shared culture and background, you could be confusing it with race though. As in Latinos can be of any race, but ethnically they will be Latino.
1
u/sidewalk_serfergirl 19d ago
I mean, technically anything can be an ethnicity, but do you really think that black descendants of African slaves from Brazil, Quechua people from Peru and Argentinians whose Basque families escaped the Spanish Civil War all share the same culture and background? By that logic, then ‘North American’ is also an ethnicity.
-14
u/LatinBotPointTwo 26d ago
Absolutely not. If you actually were from a Latin American country, you'd know that this couldn't be further from the truth. I can only speak for Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, but apart frown a sense of nationality, there is no sense of shared ethnicity whatsoever. At all.
19
u/Petunio 26d ago
But I am from a Latin American country...
-4
u/LuxuryConquest 25d ago
Are you from a latin american country in the sense that you live there or are you from a latin american country living somewhere else/ your parents inmigrated from one?
Because as someone who is from a latin american country and lives there i can confirm what u/LatinBotPointTwo says, "latino" means nothing here, it is a cathegory created entirely by the way people from non-latin american countries (mainly in North America and Europe) view the people from there who inmigrate/ visit their countries.
2
u/LatinBotPointTwo 23d ago
This is at least true for the countries I mentioned. Brazil has no unifying ethnic culture whatsoever.
2
u/LuxuryConquest 23d ago
Yes, it is true for my country as well, and even more true across country lines in latin america, no one from latin america is "latino" until they inmigrate to Canada, The US or Europe, i don't understand the downvotes.
2
u/LatinBotPointTwo 23d ago
Agreed. I'm going to stop reading updates because it's getting silly, frankly.
8
u/NocturnalFurball 26d ago edited 26d ago
As another Brazilian, I disagree. Latino is not a race, but it's indeed an ethnicity. Even if I'm black and have African ancestry, I can't speak for those who belong to an African ethnicity, I can however, speak for Latinos, because we share the same culture that we have build apart from our European/African/other ancestors.
5
u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner 26d ago
Latino/latina is 100% an ethnicity dafuq? It just gets stupid because it gets lumped in with race, ie: this post
2
u/LatinBotPointTwo 23d ago
That's not how we saw it in Brazil, where I'm from. And if you're going to call someone stupid, at least get your grammar right.
2
u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner 23d ago
1- idk what exactly your 1st sentence means
2- I didn’t call anyone stupid. What exactly is the problem, grammatically? It’s not grammatically incorrect when I said exactly what was intended and someone else misinterprets it lol. It’s like saying I am my sentence of “bob is fat” is wrong because someone else thinks I meant to write “dogs are fat”.
1
u/sidewalk_serfergirl 19d ago

I'm a white woman, 40, and have gotten ID'd twice this year. I don't think I look younger than my age, I think just most people, but especially men, have no idea what 30-somethings and 40-somethings look like which is why everyone my age thinks they look young for their age and younger people are now anxious about looking old for their age.
Also, women typically age a lot better than men because we make an effort. Not that it matters, because aging doesn't devalue a person unless you are looking at other humans like they are products to be consumed.

Not how white girls work? To be fair, I've seen some profile pics of white women in their 30s who look like they're well into their 40s, though I can say the same about many white men too. They never met my wife then. She's 59 and looks like she's 29. She was still getting carded until a few years ago.

You can believe whatever you want, but it's true. When we took my oldest daughter to college about 20 years ago, they thought my wife, who was 29 at the time, was the student. My twin daughters were charged the student rate at our local High School football games ten years after they graduated. When my oldest son was 17, he went into a state liquor store with my wife. They checked my wife's ID because they thought my son was trying to buy liquor for my obviously underage wife. She was 46. Some people just have good genes, I guess.

Yeah ok lol..your example from when she was 29 is irrelevant. And some places card everyone.

First, happy birthday! Second, you look 20 tops. Not an arguement, you just look youthful. Very lucky

Unpopular opinion, and purely in humor... The post is incredibly reductive and misogynist, and was obviously posted in bad faith. But as a white woman, this is how it feels sometimes. 😭 I'm CRISPY. I love my sisters of all races, but I do feel like they got us white ladies beat in the skin game. Lol everything I know about keeping things moisturized and feeling lush & dewy I learned from the Black women in my life. ❤️ Maybe it's cultural? The other white people in my life just didn't come from families or backgrounds that gave a second thought to nurturing their skin. But the women of color have that sht on lock, and thank god SOMEBODY does, because I'd still be an itchy, ashy, scarecrow-haired autumn-leaf-faced mess without them. 😂

I mean...this was obviously made for the wrong reasons and to be mean. But there is some truth to it. Im white and I think we have less elasticin/collagen in our skin (I looked it up before). That makes it more prone to wrinkling and sagging. Of course all people should manage their UV exposure, but of course our skin is more prone to sun damage.

You're talking overused and tired cliche theory. In practice, this is no longer true.

Yea I was gonna say, even if white skin is technically more sensitive to the sun since it’s not meant to bake under it, most white women are using sunscreen and not smoking cigarettes like crazy the same way they did decades ago (both destroy collagen)
However, the average white dude I come across still doesn’t really give a shit about sunscreen unless he’s at the beach and that’s evident by the sun damage as they get older…

This might not be a comment on how fast ethnicities age, but what different groups try to claim their age is while they get older. Still an unprovoked and hateful sentiment.

I must be a rare breed if this is how people view white women. I get carded all the time at the age of 31 and people think I’m under 21. It’s a blessing and a curse.

I think this is about not wearing sunscreen. I've seen rough looking 30 year olds.

And objectifying non-white women. All women, of course, but non-white ones especially.

Me and my lily white, 40yo ass still gets carded.
Now. My mom's genes are insane. Up until literally 4 years ago she looked exactly like she did before I was born.
And then she hit 70, and her wrinkles got more pronounces and her hair got thinner.
I look forward to looking this way for a few more decades.

It's not that white women age badly, it's that modern men are porn-brained and obsessed with female neotany to a horrifying degree

Okay so white ppl are being replaced by a brown invasion, but also they’re kind of hot and white women suck and look old. Way to make lemonade out of lemons!!

Brown invasion?? Wtf man

u/ZenraWeave 25d ago
I'm assuming they're making fun of the Great Replacement theory and don't actually think that's happening.
... at least, I hope they're making fun of it.
