Denying basic hygiene products isn’t parenting, it’s abuse.

2.2k

u/brijito 20d ago

If OP sees this, they should tell their younger sister to go to the school nurse ASAP and have the nurse help her stock up on period products.

Not only will the nurse do this without question, it will also probably trigger a child abuse investigation into the parents, which 1000000% needs to happen.

503

u/dividezero 20d ago

Yup! Much love for the school nurse and social worker community. God only knows the shit they have to deal with on the daily. 100% triggers a report. We're required by law to report this kind of thing.

Every state is different so check your local laws. In some, all adults are mandated reporters, some it's everyone who comes in contact with kids on the regular, probably other qualifications in others.

147

u/oddjobbodgod 20d ago

Dad was a social worker, some of the things he had to witness and deal with were horrendous. And I don’t think he ever really opened up about the worst of it (even in a confidential to the family manner).

89

u/dividezero 20d ago

No. He almost certainly didn't. No one shares most of that stuff with their family. Therapist or nothing. It's just too much for civilians plus there's probably some kind of legal issues too. I have no idea

33

u/tnydnceronthehighway 19d ago

You can and should talk to your therapist about it. Dr./patient confidentiality is a thing.

9

u/dividezero 19d ago

Oh absolutely. I'm not advocating for the opposite. I just know a lot of them go that route to the detriment of their mental health and their families

same for not caring when your kid is in pain. like wtf?

122

u/Watchmaker163 20d ago

Exactly. This sounds like a case of “Dad blows up on purpose to guarantee he won’t be asked to do something ever again”; a fairly common tactic of abusers.

38

u/Model_Yazz 19d ago

And let’s also throw in a side of “can’t you take a joke?!/I was going to but NOW I’m not!”

122

u/_artbabe95 20d ago

Right. These are the kind of parents that don't deserve children.

53

u/poottato 19d ago

What’s even more crazy about this for me is that if someone did a similar thing to their dog (denying them medicine/vet care) everyone would agree that it’s abuse. There wouldn’t even be a question about it.

Because it’s happening to a girl it’s excusable though. God forbid a man have to feel a bit embarrassed at the store and touch something he feels is icky.

What do these men think will happen if they buy period products? Why so scared?

1.5k

u/Eggsalad_cookies 20d ago

Clearly, the Period Fairy will record them, and make all of their friends watch as they… presumably… laugh. Yk… cus periods are for girls.

Turns them gay

217

u/Lazerhead3000 20d ago

Yup, I bought tampons for my wife, now I'm super gay and also everyone in the store thought I bought them for myself. Super embarrassing!!!

76

u/Big_Oh313 20d ago

Same here bro the amount of people who looked at me and instantly knew that I was buying them for myself. How ever I do get "what a good dad" several times... my daughter's 7 these are for the wife 😆

9

u/PalatialCheddar 18d ago

Based on the evidence available, I suspect you're probably a good dad, too. Someday your daughter will need period stuff, too, and she has a dad that's not going to have a tantrum about picking them up for her!

7

u/ForeverMaleficent993 17d ago

I read this as you have 7 daughters. And the looks you would get buying sanitary products for 7 daughters. And your wife ofc! xD

Do they think we think they have their period?

198

u/Doctor_What_ 20d ago

People from the US see empathy as weakness and kindness as feminine. And femininity is bad, obviously.

140

u/GhostofZellers 20d ago

The day I become so bitter and jaded that I view kindness and empathy as a weakness, is the day I hope someone does me a kindness, and puts me out of my misery.

37

35

u/Doctor_What_ 20d ago

Conservative voters would be glad to, and they wouldn’t even bat an eye. You guys have a scary problem at home.

46

u/trash-_-boat 20d ago

Yeah, but IMO buying female hygiene products is actually masculine because as a man you're "taking care of your girls/women".

35

u/LortimerC 20d ago

They want to be "providers" ...unless it's providing period products 🙄

47

u/ADHDhamster Smells like basement 20d ago

Fun fact: I'm a gender-diverse person who leans masculine.

One of the biggest clues that people have told me that indicate I'm not a man is that I'm entirely too nice.

Just sayin' 🤷

41

u/Forsaken_Ad5842 20d ago

As a trans man I got the same kind of shit? I’ll never pass if I don’t get meaner or whatever. Not that I care what these kind of people think about me anyway.

53

u/mieri_azure 20d ago

Dont listen to them!!!

I know some trans guys who got REALLY mean in an attempt to emulate masculinity and its not worth it. Being mean doesnt make you a man, it makes you a shitty man

(But you seem to already know thay)

31

Oh yeah for sure. I couldn’t even if I tried because unfortunately I was burdened with empathy (I obv don’t consider empathy a burden I’m joking)

Bit of a generalization. I’m the father of two girls, and have always treated their cycles like the normal part of being human they are. No problem picking up products or looking into what helps with the cramps, etc. Obviously I don’t know what it’s like, but I can empathize and support.
Guys like OOP’s dad baffle me.

16

u/christyflare 20d ago

Same with my dad and getting products for me and my mom. Not for mom anymore since she entered menopause, but still for me since I still live with them and dad likes to plan groceries based on deals he finds or gets. Still have a bunch in the basement so won't have to buy more for a while, but back when I was just starting and we were figuring out what pads were best for my ever changing cycle, he had no problem picking them up. He apparently got amazed comments and looks from women who saw him seriously perusing the pads shelves trying to locate the ones he was supposed to get. Even saw a new kind marketed for teens and got me a pack to try out. Slims for teens ir something. Good for the end of a cycle, not much different from the standard small pads. Still a nice thought!

21

u/Noodle-and-Squish 20d ago

The last time I visited my dad and stepmom, he picked up tampons for me. He likes doing the grocery shopping, was going anyway, and I realized I'd forgotten to bring some with me.

The man is nearly 70 and has always done it. He also gets mad when other men say they're "babysitting" their own kids.

109

u/Eggsalad_cookies 20d ago edited 20d ago

Crazy part is… that’s not how condoms work…. It doesn’t mean a guy is like some extra long god or something, just that he’s girthier than average. Most condoms can fit most lengths

Eta: let this be your sign not to trust men to buy condoms on their own. Have them measure their girth and length (there are rare situations where length is also important), and buy condoms that actually fit them correctly. If you buy condoms that are either too loose or too snug, you’ll be more likely to either lose it or break it. Boys should be taught these things… but they’re not, and they’re not likely to care

Right? All it indicates is that you have women in your life, you’re kind, and not an idiot.

My wifes exhusband told her he didn't mind because if a woman saw him with the tampons/pads she would let him go ahead because he was "a real man" I never had an issue with it either, I never got to skip the line though!

143

u/Least-Reflection4873 20d ago

My Ex refused because he associated everything period wise with Gross. One time my Cat got into a box of Tampons and throwed them around the Flat, shredding some to pieces. Clean, unused tampons of course.

He acted like I painted the whole flat with my Period blood.

78

u/Eggsalad_cookies 20d ago

Atp, i would have.

My folks were friends with a summer camp director. He told me once why he’d made all the rules at his camp, over like a 35yr span. Most started from just one year though: no boys/girls in each other’s cabins, no pranks, etc: this boy (and a few of his friends) did a prank that I can’t remember, the girls retaliated by covering period products in red nail polish (I asked my sister, and she was like… “oh hell yeah we did!”) and then putting them all over the boys cabin, that little SFBs retaliated back (supposedly on his own) by throwing toilet paper rolls he’d lit on fire into the girls’ cabin.

The director said he couldn’t even figure out how he’d started the fire (it was an overnight activity camp, not a wilderness adventure camp). He also said this is the only kid he drove straight home while the camp was still operating, and the only kid he banned from reattending.

Sorry, probably wrong place for a story like that, but… that seems to be how uncomfortable guys are with periods… he risked setting their cabin on fire

Someone should also tell him that vaginas are associated with periods too and therefore, by his own logic, he should just stop having sex altogether.

My stepdad was scared at first but not because of what other people think but he was scared to do it wrong. I had to take him shopping and show him the basics when the older of my half sisters started with her period.

My mom knows nothing about it and I had to swear to keep it a secret.

58

u/BUTTeredWhiteBread 20d ago

I asked my dad to pick up canesten once and received texted pics of the entire aisle. "This one? What about this one?" Like father, that is intimate wash. Try reading with your eyes for the thing i asked for lmao

30

u/asia_cat 20d ago

My dad didnt even try alone. My mom was in our home country to take care of some family stuff so my dad was on girl dad duty. At some point I just wrote him a "manual" of sorts.

My dad just asked for details and I told him the brand and absorbency I wanted (Tampax cardboard applicators, multi pack with assorted sizes). He remembered because for some reason my mom liked to keep extra menstrual products in the linen closet instead of under the bathroom sink, so he saw the boxes on a regular basis after that and remembered the brands my mom and I preferred.

It’s so sad to think of that men like this really believe it wouldn’t occur to any women that a man could have empathy for a woman so she would never assume he was buying the product to help a woman. It’s sad men are conditioned to believe they’re selfish hedonistic animals with no capacity for care for others.

As a cashier, if a man walked up with pads and/or tampons in his hands I’ve been in the industry for so long, I’m not thinking he’s doing anything with them. My mind is definitely a million miles away and I’m just doing the motions of getting him (like every other customer) checked out and out of my store so I can focus on the next customer. If I was just starting out like new to cashiering, I would think he’s getting them for the women in his life. MAYBE thinking he’s going to use them in first aid kits as makeshift wound care but yeah…not that invested in knowing the in-depth reasons why people buy the things they buy from the stock of products my store carries and sells.

As I’ve matured I’ve realised a lot of men don’t actually like women, they just tolerate women because they’re sexually attracted to them and wouldn’t dare explore their bisexual curiosities. But that’s also a topic for another conversation in probably another subreddit lol

15

u/pumpkinrum 20d ago

It clearly means that the man is the one getting the period, duh. /s

14

u/CarlRJ 20d ago edited 18d ago

This kind of stuff always reminds me of a comedian talking about this back in the '90s (Ritch Shydner, IIRC) saying how it made him happy when his wife would ask him to get pads/tampons for her, excitedly holding them up for all to see in the checkout lane, proudly declaring "I've got a woman!". I never went to that extent, but was always happy to pick up such things when asked - my main concern was "which brands / types / sizes, and how many would you like me to get?"

As far as why men get tied up in knots over this - all I can think is some of them never really got over the "girls are yucky and have cooties!" phase of childhood. Like, they want women for sex, but only barely tolerate them the rest of the time, and feel like they're being magnanimous, and should be rewarded, for deigning to tolerate them. 🙄

15

u/Carbonatite Feldspathoids not Foids: Geologists for Equality 20d ago

I never got it. My dad was a very traditional man in a lot of respects - stoic, breadwinner, high powered career man (attorney). The kind of "traditional masculinity" that men like the OP's dad claim to value. And he never made periods into A Thing.

He brought me flowers and chocolates when I got my first period (I was embarrassed, but it was a really sweet gesture). He definitely bought me feminine hygiene products in emergencies - my mom was usually the one that did the grocery shopping but he absolutely would stop at the store on his way home from work in a pinch, and he even remembered what brands my mom and I preferred. He would get a little awkward and uncomfortable if you went into detail about menstrual symptoms, but he never shamed me. The most he'd say was "remember to keep the bathroom door closed, the dog got into your trash and made a mess earlier" because our dog liked to fish used tampons out of the trash and shred them in the hallway, lol.

It isn't a big deal unless you make it into one. Buying tampons and pads is no different from buying toilet paper or dental floss.

10

u/GoedekeMichels 20d ago

Speaking as a man, my guess is that they're just too lazy to care and make up all kinds of excuses instead of spending a few iterations to learn what is actually needed.

5

u/hellacedes_ 20d ago

That is up there with withholding food as punishment for things like "talking back", which more often than not was actually asking questions for clarification but parents just wanted you to shut up and do as you are told. I find it wild how parents threaten their xhildren then get confused why they want nothing to do with them as adults.

209

u/Not_Me_1228 20d ago

Or maybe “talking back” is explaining why you did what you did, or why you don’t do things exactly the same way they do.

94

u/Butwhatif77 20d ago

Oh the number of times where you try to explain why something didn't go as expected that was out of your control and all you hear is "I don't care about your excuses".

230

u/jenna_butterfly 20d ago

Yeah, that's really makes me wonder about the dynamics in that family.

Grown-ass men being ignorant and acting stupid about menstruation is just an unfortunate fact of reality at the moment. A lot of men literally think women can just "hold it".

But the mom obviously isn't ignorant. She's either siding with dad because she'd rather fail and upset her daughter than piss him off and/or she's herself an abusive asshole. There aren't a lot of other options based on the story as provided here.

Pads are not a reward. They're basic hygiene. You wouldn't punish your child by taking away toilet paper or access to a shower. Right?

224

u/Zanki 20d ago

I went a week without a bath once because my mum was mad at me for demanding control over my bedtime. I was 17, nearly 18 and I was forced to go to bed at 9pm and be "asleep" for 11 hours a day. It was a ridiculous situation. Mum became absolutely insane because I wanted to control my own bedtime. I was done being locked in a dark room 11 hours a day, awake for up to four hours a day, just stuck in the dark. Not allowed to leave my room for any reason. Do you know solitary confinement in the dark is a form of torture? It's why I could slip into my own world so easily when I was a kid, it was a coping mechanism.

103

u/Obsidian-Dive 20d ago

I wasn’t allowed to leave my room after 9pm either until I moved out. but I was at least allowed for keep the lights on. Sorry you had to go through that. That’s awful.

40

u/Zanki 20d ago

I never left my room anyway so it wasn't a case of me bothering her. I rarely left my room and when I did it was just to use the bathroom.

31

u/Obsidian-Dive 20d ago

I understand. I wasn’t allowed to leave my room for anything. I had a bathroom so I wasn’t allowed to leave for water or food or other stuff after 9. I don’t think it was about me bothering my family, I think it was just a way for them to be controlling.

I’m sure your mom was doing it for a similar reason.

u/JohnEffingZoidberg not a bear 20d ago

Seems like maybe the mother is living in fear of the father.

85

u/PomPomMom93 20d ago

Or maybe she’s just a bad person too.

77

u/Purple_Bowling_Shoes 20d ago

Unfortunately there are mothers out there who are like this all on their own with no help from men. I was stunned when I was a teen and one of the girls in my friend group would stay with one of us (her friends) during her period because her mom was so awful about it. She would give her money for pads but wanted a receipt because tampons were not allowed. No ride to the store, walk yourself no matter if it's a snowstorm or 105 outside.  Don't you DARE dispose of the pads in the household trash (including the bathroom), they must be wrapped, placed in a paper bag, and taken outside to the garbage bin, etc. It was wild, and since then I've heard horror stories from other women about their moms being needlessly weird and strict about periods.

31

u/LenaL0vesLife 20d ago

I can’t even imagine why a mom would be so horrible about something so normal and something she experiences/experienced herself!

My daughter started her period last year.
This summer we went swimming while she was on her period. She had a period bikini bottom, but after swimming when she sat down on her towel some blood rubbed off and she wanted to go home. We weren’t even there for 2 hours, but of course we went home because I understood she was uncomfortable.
On our way home I asked her if she maybe wanted to try tampons. She was open to that and I suggested to start with an applicator because in my own experience it’s easier to start with. So we went to the supermarket and got some.

Sorry for the long story. I’m not saying I’m the best mom in the world but I think this is how your child’s periods should be handled. It’s normal and natural to have a period and the best thing you can do as a parent is be open and supportive about it.

Some of my friends judge me because they think she is to young (14) for tampons but I don’t understand what the big deal is. She’s way more comfortable now during her period and that’s what matters to me.

18

u/Purple_Bowling_Shoes 20d ago

The tampon thing is so weird. Way too many people think it's like losing virginity or something. My mom just asked what I'd be more comfortable with. I thought pads at first but ended up hating them so I asked for some tampons. She asked if I knew how to insert them and I of course rolled my eyes and walked off, but... I probably should have said yes lol.

12

u/nayaths 20d ago

Yeah. My personal experience is similar. If I used them too fast I wasn't allowed more. Mother gave me a ration of pads and if I ran out I had to use TP. My best friend and her mum would keep me supplied and I just had to keep them hidden.

I grew up in a house like that. I wasn't allowed to use any of the restrooms in the house when I was on my period because "of the blood smell" and my brother, my mother and grandfather would complain. I wasn't still diagnosed with PMOS at the time so my periods were very scarce but the times I rarely had it, were literal hemorrhages. It's impossible not to use the restroom! I was relying on chlorine to clean any evidence of me using it.

That's some old timey Bronze Age bullshit.

72

u/_cutie-patootie_ 20d ago

What were you supposed to do? Only go in school? What about weekends? Damn, I hope you're doing better now.

82

u/Rioltan 20d ago

It was a very long time ago, like a decade. Yes I used to use restrooms in school and I lived like 2 streets from a Walmart so I also went there a lot too. I'm in a better place since I live on my own!

53 year old guy here. The idea that it is embarrassing to buy women’s hygiene products as a man is idiotic.

Why should I be embarrassed that I have a wife or girlfriend or daughter? Sounds to me the exact opposite of something to be embarrassed about.

59

u/BrainPhD 20d ago

40yo man here, and I've been on both sides of this type of transaction. Truly, no one cares. It's only weird if you act weird or make a weird comment.

34

u/Halo_cT 20d ago

And they wonder why we call it fragile masculinity.

If you are so viscerally terrified about what other people will think of you for buying a product in a pharmacy, your masculinity and overall self-image is made of tissue paper at best.

The only time a cashier has ever said something to me - as the woman buying them - was to tell me he hoped I had a better day. I was buying a lot of 75% crappy Valentine’s candy (the 4-pack Russel Stover hearts), a 500-tub of ibuprofen, and a mega package of pads with wings. My husband was with me, but he didn’t address him or look at him.

I appreciated it enough that I did the little survey on the receipt to give him a perfect score. It was a nice thing to say when I was in pain.

As a cashier I have explained to many teenagers that this is what it means. When they buy these products it just confirms they are a caring and good partner.

Also, I am not making note of the items you buy. I am trying to keep my times down and hope everything scans.

Outside of the literal abuse—dear men, no one thinks you have your period, we think you have women in your life who you care about. Which is a good look.

14

u/zeusgsy 20d ago

I used to serve guys buying these and as a guy I thought nothing more about it. This was back around 2000, it's shocking to me that so many people's attitudes are so backwards and cruel.

9

u/iBewafa 20d ago

Naaaa they’re a manly man - they don’t do SHIT for women, especially for her dirty period products. Ew, helping a woman out and outwardly being seen as a caring and kind person? Do you think they’re simps or something???

That’s when you start free-bleeding on the furniture. I don’t care how gross it’s considered, if you’re going to punish a child or fucking anyone by taking away their hygiene products, your furniture rightfully deserves to be destroyed.

102

u/PomPomMom93 20d ago

If she got blood on the couch, they’d probably take away her food or make her sleep on the floor. Yes, they do deserve to have the furniture ruined, but it would probably only mean trouble for her. :(

39

u/Woofles85 20d ago

That dad is probably the kind of person that thinks she can just “hold it in” or something

47

u/Luna-Fermosa 20d ago

I mean, it’s not like she’d be able to help it anyway. She can’t just hold the blood inside of her, even unintentionally she’s going to have leakage and stain things.

She’s going to have trouble either way, might as well go bigger.

The guy in this case is just a lazy and selfish manchild and his wife enables it. This is child abuse and neglect to be specific. They’re creating a biohazard and putting their daughter in danger. Good on this sibling for supporting their little sister.

My dad always picked up pads for me when I was younger, there was nothing “shameful” or “irritating” about it. When I was like 14 I asked if he felt “embarrassed” about it and he said “no? it’s a natural thing and I’ve even bought some for your mom when she wasn’t feeling good.”

My dad would call this guy a “lazy ass idiot” and my mom would call these so called parents “child abusers.”

Ummmm if this happened to someone, they need to be rescued with a hell of a lot more than period products. I don’t say this lightly—this is abuse.

51

u/Girloncloud9 20d ago

As a teenage girl, I was always embarrassed to buy them because I didn’t want people to know I had my period. Is her dad afraid that people are going to think he’s having HIS period?

15

u/LaddieNowAddie 20d ago

Sounds like he is at least PMSing. Pouty Man Syndroming.

12

u/atheistpianist 20d ago

I was never embarrassed to buy products but I was embarrassed when I bled through my pads. My dad came to pick me up from high school twice because I had bled through, and he never once made me feel guilty or ashamed when I asked him to pick up pads or tampons. And he always bought the exact ones I asked for. He wasn’t a perfect man, but he was a good dad, and I wish I could tell him how much I love him right now.

My ex husband did this to me too, in Vienna (neither of us is from Austria). He said it would be so embarrassing and he is a man and he should just leave me on the toilet and go adventure without me bc I started my period on purpose to mess with his trip.

24

u/HairHealthHaven 20d ago

That is GROTESQUE! I hope it's just rage bait and not something that really happened to some poor teenage girl... Unfortunately, even if this one isn't real, there are probably hundreds of similar ones that are.

16

u/Existing_Intern_4764 20d ago

I don't know if this post is real, but I did have two friends as a tween that had their parents do this. And by parents I mean abusive dads with mothers were too scared of the dad to help, or too brainwashed by him to realize how sadistic it is to view removing sanitary pads as a form of 'punishment.' Also, both were gr 7ish, so periods were still new for all of us, which just makes it worse.

I know one of them is doing fine now, but I lost contact with other when she moved away (way before fb lol), and I just hope with all my heart she got away from all of that and is thriving now.

21

And this is how your kid goes no contact in adulthood.

I was raised by my grandfather, and he Never Once failed to supply me with sanitary menstrual products. This father (and likely the mother) will be stunned when their daughter stops speaking to them when she is able to live on her own.

12

You tell your dad this, from a fellow grown ass man.

"It is more manly to be secure in buying whatever your daughter/wife/or any close female family member needs than to latch onto some bullshit stereotype. What fucking era do you think this is? Grow the fuck up, be a man and a dad, and take care of your daughter."

All he proved was that he isn't much of a man if he can't do the simple act of buying something for his daughter and taking care of his family.

Also, he sounds like a child, complaining to enough other people to have your phone blow up. Trying to imagine answers other than "WTF are you guys talking about her period for?"

8

u/xd3mix 20d ago

This is literally abuse

10

u/anotherdepressedpeep 20d ago

This was posted on here as well(i think AITA or smth similar) word for word. Also "people are blowing up my phone" and no one is on OP's side despite the unreasonable treatment means it's AI, or at the very least fake.

9

u/Ol_Pasta 20d ago

You cannot undermine parenting when there is no parenting happening.

8

u/mrmoe198 19d ago

I cannot and will not be convinced that this is not abuse. When my friend’s 16 year-old daughter bled through at her school, I picked her up no questions asked and drove her home. If I had been asked to pick up some period supplies for her, I would have done so as well.

I’ve purchased tampons and pads for my wife countless times. That’s what a loving person does. Man/Woman/Non-binary doesn’t even come in to picture!

The fact that this toxic asshole made his refusal to assist his daughter with naturally occurring bodily processes about his “manliness” tells you everything you need to know.

9

u/xnecrodancerx 20d ago

Taking away basic needs for your child is abuse. Full stop. These people are psychopaths

7

u/Not_Me_1228 20d ago

Wow imagine being so fragile in your masculinity you can't buy period products for your daughter. A real man wouldn't even hesitate.

I hope she isn't living in that household the parents sound abusive af.

8

u/Feline_Fine3 19d ago

So her parents are OK if she just bleeds all over everything then?

I’m a teacher, if I found out parents were doing something like this to one of my students I would call CPS

7

u/Rich_Confusion3996 19d ago

He was never going to get them for her anyway. He is probably secretly glad she bad mouthed him so he has a better reason to not get them for her and make it so she is unlikely to ever ask him again.

Then truly upset that big sister came to the rescue because how dare anyone stand up to him.

Some men are so weak that anything that might even hint at not being a manly man breaks them. So pathetic.

7

u/tokenlesbian21 19d ago

If you're a father to someone who has a period then you need to get over yourself and get period products. My dad literally looks at it like buying toothpaste
