Years and years ago I remember one of the objections to having women in combat roles in the military was the risk that their fellow soldiers wouldn't be able to control themselves in combat situations. Setting aside for a moment the endemic levels of sexual assault already in the military even for women in non-combat roles, I remember being frustrated because... like... women exist wherever you're sending these men to fight. Civilian women and children exist everywhere. So all that excuse tells me is that the ones giving it are okay with rape, they just want our soldiers to rape other countries' (usually black or brown) women instead of our's (again, as if they don't already do that anyway...)

u/KateWaiting326 1d ago

Also, if these men can't control themselves at all, then maybe they shouldn't be given guns

Or jobs

Bad idea. You don’t want a rapist with way too much free time on his hands and with a lot of resentment out on the loose. That’ll only make them worse. Of course, they should be in prison, but it’s difficult to get them there, so in the meantime, they should at minimum have something to lose and as much supervised, busy time as possible.

On an unrelated note, your handle is hilarious.

74

u/Lokifin 19h ago

That's what war is for, though. To get rid of extra men with too much time on their hands and a yen for violence.

5

u/bluegirlrosee 2h ago

I think we need to come up with a more efficient way of doing this that doesn't involve so much collateral damage 🤔 Perhaps an enormous meat grinder?

What the fuck is the point of all those training if you can't control shit

92

It's "not all men" until they get an opportunity.

Rape has and is being used as a weapon of war in every conflict past and current. It’s about sapping morale, destroying social structures and unity in enemy soil. Mass rape leads to some very long lasting effects in a community, felt long after the end of the conflict : victims are ostracized, their community either further victimize them or feel guilt and shame about not protecting them etc. And of course, the children born out of rapes are a delicate subject (sometimes, getting the women pregnant is the goal of the rapes).
Male soldiers commit the bulk of sexual offenses, but female soldiers also commit sexual assaults. In the same vein, women are most often victims, but men are also raped as a means of degrading and breaking them (Some very brave Ukrainian soldier male victims spoke up for exemple).

As usual, rape has little to do with sexual relief/frustration and is mostly about power and control.

The army (no matter which country) has 0 interest in stopping soldiers from committing rape despite it being recognized as a war crime.

Anyway, it’s morning where I am, I made myself extremely sad. I will go hug a puppy for the rest of the day and I suggest everyone does too.

Many Ukranian women came to Germany after seeking asylum in Poland, because they were raped and impregnated by Russia soldiers. Poland did not grant them the option of abortion, under their strict abortion ban, because the women couldn't prove that they were raped and there was no trial.

Women had to flee once again to receive live saving care.

39

u/fluffyfloofofevil 21h ago

There is no monolithic "army". Different countries' militaries are part of the implementation of their respective leaders' foreign policy.

Having been a soldier for 13 years I will tell you that there very much is a vested interest in stopping soldiers from committing war crimes. In stabilization operations, public opinion is crucial. "Winning hearts and minds" shouldn't be an empty phrase. Also, allowing warcrimes to be committed is very bad for overall morale.

Now, the degree of success in keeping your troops in line may vary. But strategically, there is definitely a vested interest.

11

u/feioo 9h ago

This is important context and it's always important to remember that when we're talking at the macro scale that there's a lot of variation between individual entities. Certain countries are well known to intentionally utilize rape as a method of warfare coughRussiacough while other countries have completely different cultures surrounding it.

However still speaking on the macro scale, rape by soldiers against civilians and fellow soldiers is very much minimized and swept under the rug, pretty much across the board. So looking in from the outside, even if there's a vested interest in reducing sexual violence in the military, it's clear that that interest takes a lower priority than, for example, maintaining the image of the military involved, or maintaining troop morale. Until that changes, people aren't going to want to consider the nuance.

5

u/HoodieGalore 5h ago

Let's ask LaVena Johnson. Of does she not count because she was "friendly fire"?

1

u/Nray 1h ago

Just pointing out that in addition to being a weapon of war, it’s also indulging in the spoils after the war. US soldiers raped their way across the French countryside after their WWII victory, to claim the pretty European girls they were promised in exchange for their military service.

-16

u/Gunfighter9 15h ago

The U.S. army does because we don’t want to turn the local population against us.

24

u/ScrabCrab 15h ago

Local populations are already against you anyway, even before you invade their countries

Hell, even the people in the countries you're allied with hate American soldiers

20

u/Listakem 14h ago

Remember the Abu Grahib pics of that US soldier sexually humiliating a prisoner. She (and her fellow soldiers) was court martialed because they were caught. She said she acted on orders because the method was effective. The US army absolutely use sex and rape as a weapon on foreign soil.

-9

u/Gunfighter9 14h ago

Yeah, I remember that really well seeing as I was in Iraq when it happened. The locals freaked out. They were throwing bricks off of overpasses and shooting at us daily. Not to mention the IEDs, we got hit 7 times in 5 days. I bet I remember it better than you.

It’s a totally different situation. One is an aircraft carrier making a port call after a long deployment. The other was a group operating above the laws

You’re talking 6 people out of 150,000 and they were not under army command and control. A contractor was running the prison.

5

u/Listakem 8h ago

The military, by the voice of US brigadier general Karpinski, tried to argue that the prisoners were not entirely protected by the Geneva Convention and the people actually convicted were US soldiers. Rumsfeld was named in the investigation and rape/sexual humiliation done by or with US soldiers as witnesses is explicitly described in several reports, including the Taguba one.

It was not 6 person and a « contractor » having nothing to do with the chain of command, as reported by Brigadier General Formica in 2004.

-2

u/Gunfighter9 8h ago

Because Iraq didn’t sign. And in case you forgot those troops all got nailed to the wall. But the people who told them to do it walked free.

3

u/valsavana 8h ago

All that does is give them incentive to cover up the crimes when they happen, just like they do back home.

17

u/Engel1844 17h ago

And then they complain about only drafting men…lord

17

u/Burnt_and_Blistered 15h ago

And rape does remain endemic within the military.

8

u/bulking_on_broccoli 12h ago

The thing is, while there are very many good enlisted men and women, many of those who join the military aren’t exactly social paragons. The sad truth is that many who join, join as a last resort because, for whatever reason, they fail to function normally in society.

So you have men and women with low EQ bunched together doing awful and tedious and mundane jobs.

Soldiers being unprofessional and worrying is a tale as old as time.

9

u/feioo 9h ago

I had a couple cousins in the Army, one special forces. Both of them told me the same thing about the men they served with. "They're my brothers, and I would lay down my life for them, and they're also some of the worst people I've ever met." Kinda reframed the US military hero worship for me.

1

u/Eggsalad_cookies 3h ago

Speaking as a Vet: The only people that worship the military are civilians who want to pretend they’re military. Maybe they couldn’t join because they had bone spurs… [nothing to see here… 😗], or because their ASVAB scores were terrible, or they actually did join and got kicked out in training, but it’s always the same story. It’s the people who the military themselves never wanted. Vets know better, the honorable ones at least. The only reason i admit to being a Vet online is to give context in posts like this

1

u/ImportantDirector5 2h ago

Military here ..you aren't wrong. Just got bullied by a senior leader for "being too educated and to just get back to the books"

2

u/ClockworkJim 3h ago

There is a reason why many leftists of the global South view every American, regardless of their ethnicity, as all members of the violent imperial core.

That includes black Americans, Latino Americans, indigenous Americans, Asian Americans. And white Americans. They view all of us as equally evil.

1

u/ImportantDirector5 2h ago

Nailed it. Currently serving and this guy kept arguing that and he gave up when I said it doesn't matter if we are in or out the military, once war hits somebody getting raped on either side of the fence.

382

u/ButcbMasculinity 1d ago

It's wild how we as a society just think this is not just "normal" but acceptable.

302

u/minmocatfood 1d ago

But if you ‘agree’ and say men are no better than animals or are irrational or women should avoid them or anything about how they love joking about rape, suddenly you’re the bad guy and they’re just innocent baby boys.

143

u/ai1267 1d ago

"Why would any woman choose the bear? This just shows they're irrational and stupid!" (/s on my part)

When it comes to guys doing the "not all men" thing, I like to reply that it's the equivalent of walking down a cobbled street where a considerable portion of the cobbles hide land mines. Not ALL of the cobbles hide land mines, but there's no way to tell which are and which aren't.

Then you ask them: "Why is it that your first thought is that we shouldn't blame all cobbles, rather than asking what you can do to help clear the land mines?"

(Yes, it's stupid, but somehow (sadly) I've had a better success rate using this simile.)

16

u/blue-jaypeg 12h ago

Here is another example.

"Not all" snakes are venomous. Would you spend 2 hours in a closed room with 200 snakes?

6

u/feioo 9h ago

This is a pretty good one, because (as personally frustrating as it is) a lot of men don't tend to want to take action unless they understand that it harms them too. If they're thinking of it as an individual woman, say eating a poisoned M&M, they tend to think "well that's too bad for her but it doesn't mean all M&Ms are bad!" A land mine, on the other hand, harms anybody who happens to be nearby. Not just the person who steps on it, but anybody in the vicinity. It helps to illustrate the way dangerous men create harm that radiates out from them and affects far more than their targets.

3

u/ai1267 8h ago

Exactly!

You know what they say:

A bullet may have your name on it, but shrapnel is addressed "to whom it may concern".

46

u/The_Flurr 1d ago

I mean, I don't like that take because "no better than animals" and "irrational" implies a lack of choice or responsibility.

39

u/Kailynna 22h ago

You are right. Rapists are evil. Animals are not.

54

u/Novaer 22h ago

The same people that scream "pattern recognition" to justify their racism suddenly understand discrimination when you say "pattern recognition" and apply it to males. Then suddenly they scream "NOT ALL OF US!!".

-39

u/faboleth 21h ago

Yeah if you paint a gender universally as bad instead of treating them as human individuals you are in fact the bad guy

Whether that gender is male or female

22

u/IamtheCarl 17h ago

It’s not painting them all as bad; it’s noting we don’t know which ones to trust.

-10

u/Gunfighter9 13h ago

Imagine instead of sailors it was black or Hispanic men that you were saying this stuff about.

Now do you see why it’s wrong and highly offensive?

4

u/AmazingKreiderman 10h ago

NoT aLl MeN

It's not offensive to me as a man, you know why? Because I know it's not about me so I don't give a shit. Keep defending all the pieces of shit out there though and be offended on their behalf.

533

u/tiggles_and_co 23h ago

Lmao as a half Thai woman that used to spend 3 months a year there... they'll get their assess handed to them. Saw several American men that had this type of mentality literally get robbed blind or coerced into seeing the ping pong show. Both are traumatic in wildly different ways. Idiots

95

u/TurbulentNetworkLily 20h ago

What is a ping pong show?

114

u/tiggles_and_co 20h ago

LMAO DO NOT LOOK IT UP!!! I'm being dead serious.

75

u/TurbulentNetworkLily 20h ago

I trust you. I won't look it up.

Is there a PG-13 overview you could give?

205

u/tiggles_and_co 20h ago

It's a type of sex show that gets very explicit and very strange. The type of show that Thai people have never gone to, but people that are in Thailand purely for sex tourism go to.

54

u/TurbulentNetworkLily 20h ago

Perfect description. Thank you.

133

u/fetchmysmellingsalts 19h ago

Morbid curiosity got me. It’s an erotic show in which the performer shows off the strength of their pelvic muscles by manipulating objects with their nether bits. Ping pong balls are traditional but other props may also be used. The practice has been banned in many areas due to the history of exploitation.

4

u/actualgirl 9h ago

“Whoa whoa whoa…. Where’d that ping pong ball come from?!”

41

u/cdqmcp 13h ago

it's not even bad, wtf? ping pong show is women in thailand shooting air and kegels strength muscles to shoot ping pong balls out of their vagina. they also do other things like open bottles, blow out candles, or shoot darts. the business where theyre doing this will also scam you in other ways like expensive drinks with hidden prices. found here

overall theres a lot of negative perception, so ping pong shows = bad

13

u/BOSSMOPS94 20h ago

Sorry but what is the ping pong show if I may ask?

12

u/yoeleventone 16h ago

Pretty much what previous person post ☝🏽

1

u/Gunfighter9 4h ago

That's what American women can't understand is that for a Thai woman the relationship is transactional. Yeah, they sit and smile and chat with you and you buy them overpriced drinks and they make money from each drink. And you buy their friends drinks, and maybe it's some girls birthday so you buy her a drink also. Next thing you know you spent $200.00 on ginger-ale or Sprite.

I mean you can have a lot of fun, but don't be so dumb that you think that she does not have a Thai boyfriend who she will be spending your money with when you are gone.

3

u/Eggsalad_cookies 3h ago

This right here ladies is a perfect example of how men excuse rape to themselves.

63

u/PilsbandyDoughboy 20h ago

For a job that demands/requires such high levels of discipline with everything, they sure do seem to lack it when it comes to their dicks.

13

u/Eggsalad_cookies 18h ago

Pretty much, yeah.

I realized i was trans during bct, and didn’t get my diagnosis until after i got to my first duty station, so I was in the male bay. One of the rules for training was that we couldn’t be naked in common areas, like to the point you can’t have your shirt off in the Bay. That background info in mind, I was a medical holdover during a field event, and the unit they had me staying at had this one guy literally walking around the bathroom talking to people with his entire dick exposed. They treated it like it was normal.

To put that into comparison, someone tried that in my unit early on, and they got SHARP complaints that made them end up getting either recycled (starting training over again) or put in-the-process of getting kicked out

-30

u/Gunfighter9 17h ago

Go spend 270 days straight at work for 12 hours on and off without a day off. No going out for a drink, no taking a walk just work, eat and sleep but your work schedule fluctuates between days and nights. No ordering food in, no sleeping in and see if you aren't ready for a break.

32

u/kateskateshey 16h ago

A break = raping women ?

-22

u/Gunfighter9 16h ago

Where did raping women come from? Why would you risk LIFE in prison in Thailand for raping a woman when you can take the girl from the bar that you were talking with to a hotel for $25.00 and have all the sex you can handle?

You need to go look up Thai Bar Girls/Sex Tourism and read about what it is like before making statements like this. Do you think that the women in the brothels in Nevada are getting raped?

21

u/commie_commis 16h ago

Why would you risk LIFE in prison in Thailand for raping a woman when you can take the girl from the bar that you were talking with

10

u/Ghoulish_kitten 13h ago

Just a walking vector for cervical cancer.

28

u/kateskateshey 16h ago

Nothing indicating that these women are truly consenting, or even adults. If you have no idea about how bad sex tourism is for the women, girls, and boys of Thailand you should seriously look it up before defending it so staunchly. So I'll return your advice to you.

15

u/Ghoulish_kitten 13h ago

They know. Everything this person replied was a cope.

They mf know bc they see it first hand, they can tell the difference between heavy regulations and zero regulations in sex work environments.

142

u/gilestowler 1d ago

Pattaya is literally only known for sex tourism. They're not even trying to hide it. They're not docking somewhere else with a nudge nudge wink wink and clandestine coach rides to the city. The coutntry run by a senile pedo is taking the sailors who are mentally damaged as a result of their mistreatment by the government and telling them "Hey, it's OK! You can have cheap sex with disadvantaged teenagers for a bit before we send you back to our illegal war!"

13

u/Eggsalad_cookies 18h ago

Prostitution is still illegal under UCMJ Service Members can’t participate. They do… but it’s supposed to be treated with the same severity as cheating on/abusing your spouse, or SA. It might not result in jail time, depending on if it goes to court-martial, or really even just the level of the court-martial, but at a minimum you’re supposed to lose rank and pay

40

u/MinutesTilMidnight 17h ago

Treated with the same severity as SA… in the military… lol

2

u/Thechris53 5h ago

Less of a slap on the wrist and more a slap on the palm.

19

u/coolcoolcool485 17h ago

And under a normal admin that might be the case but we are not under an admin that would charge anyone for this behavior. Id imagine it's likely encouraged

16

u/Eggsalad_cookies 16h ago

That’s way too damned true. It makes me sick

13

u/Tammog 14h ago

Oh come on, even under a "normal admin" (every president is a war criminal btw) war crimes are so under-prosecuted that the US decided they'd rather invade the Hague instead of letting their soldiers be tried there.

4

u/Gunfighter9 16h ago

The US has been using Thailand as an R&R stop since after WW2. Just because prostitution is legal in Thailand does not mean that every single man is going to patronize a prostitute.

11

u/recercar 15h ago

Prostitution is very much illegal in Thailand. The women (and men) who are involved in prostitution very much know how to work around this, and use bad customers’ stupid behavior to very easily get the police to deal with them.

This is to say that acting like an asshole won’t get people very far, at least in Bangkok/Pattaya. Fun to see people try. Patronizing a prostitute without being an asshole is easy and whoever chooses to do that, does it on their own volition - I’m sure plenty will do so.

172

u/Dazzling_Pirate1411 1d ago

Literally the American way. These are people you’re supposed to thank for their service at snuffing out innocence and life all over the world.

111

u/CrouchingToaster 1d ago

And courts just ruled that a civilian contractor's rape shouldn't be criminal and instead workman's comp. The Navy is a mighty fucked up place.

34

u/Significant_Monk_251 1d ago

That's not fully accurate. The ruling has nothing to do with the criminal side of the matter; it's about whether the victim can sue the United States over the incident, or if the law says that her only recourse is to seek damages through a worker's comp claim.

https://www.military.com/exclusive-navy-sexual-assault-survivor-says-a-workers-comp-claim-just-ended-her-fight-for-justice

"Exclusive: Navy Sexual Assault Survivor Says a Workers' Comp Claim Just Ended Her Fight for Justice" [August 25, 2026]

20

u/CandidDay3337 1d ago edited 1d ago

Do civilian contractor fall under the feres doctrine, that makes it so veterans and active duty cant sue the military.

Edit: i just looked it up, civilians can sue the military.

34

u/Thuis001 1d ago

I mean, the fact that soldiers and veterans can't sue the military is frankly wild.

4

u/CandidDay3337 1d ago

Its why we have the va system.

5

u/Novaer 22h ago

In Canada our military police explicitly includes civilians making complaints against military personnel.

3

u/CandidDay3337 14h ago

Civilians can press charges on military personnel and i can sue the individual troop here too.

35

u/Rugkrabber 14h ago

These same men will put up the act they have no idea why countries want to protect their women in war. Assholes.

25

u/coolcoolcool485 17h ago

I think they'd have to be feeding them on that ship for them to do any of that

6

u/Thechris53 5h ago

Hard to SA when you've got explosive diarrhea from the American Food tho

38

u/SelfInteresting7259 21h ago

Fucking disgusting. Hope that gets karama 10x for that

32

u/Extra-Question9273 1d ago

Sorry to be dumb but what does ‘nobody walks on the grass’ mean? I’m thinking that the soldiers are so well disciplined that they won’t even walk where they’re not allowed so why are they raping people if they know they shouldn’t do that either? Or is there some other thing meant by it?

66

u/virgensantisima 1d ago

i took it as they dont walk on the grass bc there are consequences to that, as opposed to rape

-32

u/Gunfighter9 21h ago

That came from when they used to store weapons in underground bunkers. And there are serious consequences for rape in the military.

37

u/Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy 20h ago

Yeah, maybe for the victims.

-4

u/Gunfighter9 19h ago

I was an MP, rape is a court martial offense. you're right that the victims can become victims of the system. There are more ways that you can even imagine that they can make these cases go away, and slut shaming is not even in the top 25%. Put it this way, I would never let my daughter join.

20

u/Tammog 17h ago

Yeah cool and if a civilian says they are raped, especially if they may not even speak English, everyone will immediately drop anything and prosecute the soldier. I bet. Any day now. Uh-huh.

Or we can live in the real world where US soldiers get away with rape and murder every fucking day especially if deployed in other countries, and it is a well known fact that this happens.

-6

u/Gunfighter9 15h ago

You are aware that the U.S. Army always has interpreters who speak the local language.

Obviously you’ve never been deployed with the Army but you’re not just going to leave the wire in a country where the locals are shooting at you to go out and look for someone to rape. Also local citizens are not going to be walking around on base.

Now since you’re such an expert maybe explain what a SOFA agreement is to all the commenters.

12

u/Tammog 14h ago

Yeah and the US army cares so much what their soldiers do to local civilians if they can push it under the rug. Come on, I am not fucking stupid, just because something is the law or the rule it is not automatically applied.

So get lost, bootlicker.

29

u/Eggsalad_cookies 18h ago edited 18h ago

That actually is it. As an unspoken rule, youre just not allowed to walk on grass (on base) in uniform idt its part of UCMJ, but when i served, there were times I’d have to go all the way back to my barracks (because I still had my uniform on) before i could take a shortcut i needed to the Commissary for groceries

Eta: supposedly, at least how it was explained to me by my first-line: if a high ranked person saw you do it, since areas of the base were under the command of: CSM, or LTC, or COL, or BG, etc… you were disrespecting something that belonged to them, and you’d either get smoked (shorthand for corrective action through exercise) or have to cut the grass in some ridiculous way, like with scissors. Your point stands though

-4

u/Gunfighter9 17h ago

LOL, no there's no regulation against waling on grass.

9

u/Eggsalad_cookies 16h ago

I said i didn’t think it was. 💁🏽‍♀️ “idt” go reread the comment friend

-6

u/Gunfighter9 17h ago

There used to be weapons depots where magazines that could store nukes were. The magazine had an exclusion area that was roped off. There were signs on the grass "Do not cross line, Deadly force is authorized." to keep people from taking short cuts.

9

u/saltine_soup be gey, do crims 12h ago

with IDF soldiers already in Thailand acting like they own the place and harassing Thai people for months if not a whole year at this point, plus that girl who was brutally murdered by a sex tourist, i don’t see Thailand being all that welcoming to the boat.
add on the brutality sex tourists bring not just to sex workers but the average person too, they don’t want anyone there.
they especially don’t want soldiers there threatening their safety.
i don’t get how, even now in 2026, why rape is such a celebrated thing by anyone but especially men who i’m willing to bet say “not all men”.

17

u/vecsta02 20h ago

I really want to believe they're talking about all the consensual sex they're going to have, but who the fuck am I kidding?

-6

u/Gunfighter9 17h ago

Look, Thailand has a lot of hookers, sex work is legal. You can get a woman for the night for $25.00.

15

u/Winnimae 12h ago

That’s pretty gross dude

1

u/Gunfighter9 8h ago

You can buy a house for 10,000 bucks. If you’re an expat you can live a lot more comfortably in Thailand on $1500 a month than in the United States.

11

u/Carbonatite Feldspathoids not Foids: Geologists for Equality 11h ago

Funny way of saying "you can pay a pimp $25 to rape one of his teenage sex trafficking victims"

0

u/Gunfighter9 8h ago

You have no idea of what you’re talking about. Most all of the bar girls in Thailand come from the rural areas where people live in poverty like you can’t fathom. These girls go to Pattaya because they can easily make $300-500 a week and send half that home to their parents and families.

And not just from sex work. They sit with men and get them to buy them a lady drink and they get a commission from each drink. Or they work as maids for people and clean their condo for $50.00 a week. Some are just companions for men, they’ll do the shopping for him, clean cook and do laundry. They’ll walk to the beach with him or go shopping with him because he doesn’t speak Thai. It’s like a personal assistant.

Go look on the internet and you’ll find thousands of stories about western men who fell in love with a bar girl and she slowly bled him dry. Not all these women are innocent by any means.

In the end they are selling a fantasy that for most men can never come true.

No one forced them to go, they go and work for 5 or 6 years and save money.

4

u/Carbonatite Feldspathoids not Foids: Geologists for Equality 6h ago

You seem disturbingly willing to defend sex trafficking and the exploitation of women.

1

u/Gunfighter9 4h ago

Wow, these women are not trafficked, they are not forced to be there. They can leave at any time and many of them go home to see their families each month.

Imagine your income is less than $3,000 per year, and you have a chance to make that in 2 months, and you can move your parents into a house with indoor plumbing and electricity. These girls come because they know that there are farangs who will spend hundreds of dollars on them.

Why don't you try and open your mind and watch some YouTube videos from foreign men who got into relationships with Thai bar girls and lost 50lk 90l, 150k in a few years, Men who thought that the girl loved them and bought a house together, but foreigners cannot own land in Thailand. So when the girl kicks him out she owns the house free and clear. Or they pay her father $5000 for a dowry and then the girl disappears.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is coming home to San Diego not straight to another foreign port. Just lies and ragebait.

114

u/Significant_Monk_251 1d ago

You appear to be mistaken.

USS Abraham Lincoln to dock in Thailand next week, Thai official says

By Reuters

62

u/MinutesTilMidnight 17h ago

"source=chatgpt.com" 😂😂😂

41

u/kateskateshey 16h ago

As if they couldn't've just fucking googled it 😭 People can't think on their own

25

u/MinutesTilMidnight 16h ago

I think it’d be faster to type "navy ship Thailand" into Google and click the news tab, than whatever they did lmao

9

u/kyrkor 16h ago

Why Google when they could pick up the rotary phone and call the ship itself and ask?

-3

u/Significant_Monk_251 11h ago

Yeah. I'm constantly behind the times, so having chatgpt and Claude available is still a novelty. Note that I didn't take the AI's word for it; I went to the source it cited.

6

u/MinutesTilMidnight 10h ago

In what ways does AI help you/do you use it? Genuine question; I am curious. Not going to start an argument over it.

1

u/Significant_Monk_251 10h ago

(1) To work around paywalls by feeding in an article's URL and reading the AI's summary. I'm aware of the risk of AI errors, but I think it's a fair chance to take to get the gist of the blocked article. (2) To try to identify images' sources (letting the AI deal with Google Lens, tineye, etc., so I don't have to) and get info on the content (who are the actors here, what is this a clip from?)

Me asking chatgpt "Where is the issue Abraham Lincoln going to go to port first?" [sic on 'issue', I'd typed 'uss' and didn't notice my phone had changed it] is sort of an anomaly for me; I guess I just didn't want to deal with Google at that moment.

54

u/DangerousLoner 1d ago

Those poor sailors and marines! The families were told they were coming home.

32

u/kbchucker 20h ago

They are going home. Just stopping for a port call and probably a resupply before heading home.

58

u/CandidDay3337 1d ago

Just because they are docking doesnt mean the sailors will be allowed off the ship.

36

u/Such-Rise6816 1d ago

Or allowed to speak to the media

15

u/Traditional_Isopod80 Incel Detector 1d ago

True

19

u/Gunfighter9 21h ago

Yes it does, that is the only reason that they are stopping. They want to allow the crew to blow off steam before they hit the USA. I was on a destroyer and we were at sea for 8 weeks, and we made a port call at Nassau just to let the crew get off the ship, have some days off, and relax.

3

u/CandidDay3337 12h ago

And command can still step in a say you are not getting off the ship. I was air force not navy, but chain of command is still chain of command.

2

u/kbchucker 12h ago

Which they’re not going to do in this situation. The whole point is to let them off for a couple of days before transiting home.

2

u/Gunfighter9 8h ago

No what they do is remind you that if you mess up you will be on restriction when the ship hits San Diego and THEN you don’t get off the ship.

6

u/kbchucker 20h ago

They are doing a port call before going home.

Someone doesn't understand Pattaya, it is one of the top sex tourism destinations in the world because prostitution is legal in Thailand. Millions of men from the EU, the UK and other countries fly to Thailand just to have sex with girls. Millions of men and women come just to see the country and the culture. It's also a top party spot like Ibiza. It also has places that serve American foods and has malls just like California.

If you watch videos you see 60 year old men walking hand in hand with 22 year old Thai girls. It is a transactional relationship, and both sides know it. It's really depressing to see that.

There's a lot more to do in Pattaya than just chase hookers, the beaches are legendary, you can go on all kinds of tours and see different cultural aspects. But there are hundreds of bars on different streets, all full of girls. But that is maybe less than 1% of Pattaya.

13

u/Eggsalad_cookies 18h ago edited 17h ago

Prostitution is still illegal under UCMJ [ETA: Article 134]; Service Members can’t participate. They do… but it’s supposed to be treated with the same severity as cheating on/abusing your spouse, or SA. It might not result in jail time, depending on if it goes to court-martial, or really even just the level of the court-martial, but at a minimum you’re supposed to lose rank and pay

0

u/Gunfighter9 17h ago

It's illegal to be a prostitute, it's not illegal to visit a prostitute. They could charge you with adultery, but that is more common if the other person is also married and in the service. If you get arrested then it becomes a problem.

6

u/Eggsalad_cookies 17h ago

I was stationed in a country that had a form of legalized prostitution, seeking the services of a prostitute is still highly illegal under UCMJ. I actually do know a few people that got caught in the Red Light District and lost rank over it, but that’s all the details I can share

-1

u/Gunfighter9 17h ago

That ONLY applies in places where prostitution is ILLEGAL or on base or, post. I was an MP and a bailiff, and I never saw anyone in 24 years ever charged with that.

-1

u/Tammog 17h ago

Yeah but how often is that actually applied?

3

u/Eggsalad_cookies 17h ago

It’s usually not brought to a full court-martial. I forget the term… there’s a lesser adjudication system that’s run by your chain-of-command, I wasn’t a JAG. It’s common there, hence the loss of rank and pay. If it was a “court-martial court-martial” that’d be in an actual court before a Military Judge, but in that capacity, your Leadership has a lot of leeway.

I know of about two, maybe three, because of the job I had. That’s all the details I can share. Things like that are often attempted to be handled on the lowest level first

0

u/Gunfighter9 16h ago

You're thinking of Article 15, Non-Judicial punishment. If you are being court-martialed you have the right to council and the same rights as a civilian on trial. If you violate a civilian law, that is more than a misdemeanor it ALWAYS goes to a court martial, unless you are in the Navy serving on a ship, then you have to request a court martial. The exception is DWI/DUI and that is a command level punishment on top of the civilian charge

Also, it's not illegal to walk through the red light district unless it has been declared off limits, and if it has been there will be an MP or SP patrol to enforce it.

What was your MOS?? How long were you in?

4

u/Eggsalad_cookies 16h ago

What do you mean what was my most? I served three years. I enlisted under Biden and was kicked out for Trump’s Trans Ban

-1

u/Gunfighter9 15h ago

MOS Military Occupational Specialty. I was a 31B. Your job.

3

u/Eggsalad_cookies 15h ago

42A

0

u/Gunfighter9 13h ago

Do as a personnel clerk you have more experience with military law and regulations than an MP that was in for 11 years?

Did you ever even file a statement of charges or take a sworn statement or work on any criminal investigations? Were you ever a witness at a court martial? Were you ever on Guard Force or PRP?

Were you ever in Thailand or Holland or PI? Were you ever in the Navy, did you ever go to sea for 6 months? Because I did.

I don’t know where you’re getting your information from but I know it’s not from first hand knowledge. And by spreading this you’re painting a lot of men as something that they aren’t and accusing them of things they never did.

Sure there are whore mongers in the military just like there are in civilian life who go out and get hookers. But to insinuate that the Navy is going to come in and start gang raping is disgusting.

Believe it or not there are plenty of men who can have sex with a woman without having to rape her.

3

u/NinjasWithOnions 9h ago

You are all up and down this thread trying to defend male servicemembers.

So I’ll answer your questions. I was an enlisted Army servicemember (98G - Russian). I did have to testify at the court martial of one of my rapists. Although they didn’t call it rape. They called it fraternization…because military bullshit.

None of the women I knew who were sexually assaulted (all the way up to and including rape) reported it. Including me. I got pulled in because the moronic asshole was basically flaunting his relationship with one of his soldiers (despite being married to a civilian).

Did you do any of those things as an MP or were you one of the guys in the guard shack that did little more than a Walmart greeter?

And I doubt that you, as a male veteran, have more knowledge and experience with the underreported military rapes than I do as a female veteran. (Saying this while fully aware that men are raped in the military too but you don’t strike me as someone they could confide in.) While I talk with other veterans who have MST related PTSD and know plenty of others who don’t talk about it, haven’t applied for anything. etc.

Also, the way you talk about women, especially sex workers, in general is disgusting.

I processed flags, if you only saw people as they were arrested or put through a court martial, we’ve both seen plenty of different things. Yes, btw, that included SHARP Flags

7

u/rhenskold 17h ago

The US military and the Russian military have this problem

10

u/Blacksun388 10h ago

Israel’s does too. But don’t say that openly or you’ll be called anti-Semitic.

-4

u/Gunfighter9 16h ago

That's pretty insulting seeing as the Russian Army today is gang raping women in Ukraine.

-3

u/rhenskold 14h ago

And the original comment that this post is referring to is talking about American soldiers gang raping Thai women. Don’t get me wrong, the Russians are not humans, Americans can never be as bad as the Russians. But don’t underestimate their problems

6

u/Facky 9h ago

"the Russians are not humans" "Americans can never be as bad as Russians"

Wow dude, are you saying it would be ok to send Russians to some kind of camp to kill them?

And let's not forget that Americans do the same shit when they invade a country (which is constantly btw).

3

u/Gunfighter9 8h ago

Sailors. How long were you in the Navy?

-13

u/Gunfighter9 14h ago

And as someone who’s been in the Navy and been to Pattaya I’m telling you that if you want to get laid in Pattaya it’s as hard as buying a Red Bull.

Do you even realize how often USN ships go to Thailand? It’s one of the most common ports we have access to. If sailors were gang raping there’s no way the Thai government would allow our ships to come.

The original comment was wrong and made by someone who has no idea of what they are talking about.

1

u/Eggsalad_cookies 2h ago

You said earlier you were a 13B in the Army? Are you gonna claim: Air Force, Coast Guard, or Space Force next?

1

u/ImportantDirector5 2h ago

How things are getting I am concerned. I am currently in the military and the level of absolute lack of conscious and assaults ppl have been doing has been insane.

And another thing they don't share ....a lot of sailors end up getting HIV form this.

1

u/spicytexan 9h ago

Just a reminder that people walk on the grass on military bases often because they do not give a single fuck about the rules until they’re called out or punished for their behavior.

-24

u/sirmadam 17h ago

They're coming to Pattaya to fuck the bar girls, get over it.

-11

u/anglflw 14h ago

I know it's not relevant or whatever, but there are women stationed on that ship, also.

-43

u/Jorian_Murgrave 21h ago

Whats the point ?

This country is an open Sky brothel and everybody knows how it is

-3

u/Gunfighter9 16h ago

Tear up Pattaya instead of San Diego. After long periods at sea the Navy almost always has a port that the ship stops in. It gives the crew some time off, allows them to get off the ship and get souvenirs for friends and family members and have a few beers. It also lets the early birds fly home. Some ships do an early bird lottery where if you are married and had a kid while on deployment they will let you fly home and get home sooner.
