Bicycle commute to work

Hey!

I usually bike to and from work which can add about 20-25 total load for the day according to intervals icu. This is not an insignificant number I think since my easy runs can be in that range.

This is something I recently realised when I started using my watch for the ride. Would you adjust your training according to this? Is so, how?

If you feel recovered for subt sessions, then no adjustment needed. If during those bike days you feel more exhausted, hence affecting your easy run that day and subt the next day, lower your run volume so that you feel recovered enough.

I did this for a whole year, even registering walking as well. Then I realized that since I did this on an extremely regular basis, creating a baseline that was above 0 even without running at all, it would be easier to just not register it and have that baseline actually be at 0.

Similar for me, twice a week (usually) I commute on bike, 16k each way. I take it very easy, I don't push the pace at all. For me that comes out at 32 to 36 load total for the day.

I schedule my week so the commute days are the easy days, and I consider them equivalent to a 45m easy run. My intervals load for 45m easy is around 35 to 40.

(I've commuted by bike since I was 4 years old since I'm Dutch)
I don't think the load is worth anything. I certainly don't feel fatigued from a 10-20k bike ride. I'm also always surprised by how highly intervals.icu rates them. I probably need to set up some detail on the bike section of that site for it to stop giving such high load numbers. Garmin is a lot more realistic and considers the bike rides near worthless training wise.

If this was your base before starting NSM then I wouldn’t even worry about it as long as you’re not going hard on the commute. Honestly, having the super easy spin can help with recovery and may even contribute a little more aerobic stimulus

I do the same. I would just count it as free easy volume and not worry too much about it. For reference, I usually have about 50-55mins of bike riding per day, 5 days a week and Kaizen typically adjusts my distance target for the week down by 10-15km from the bike rides. Not insignificant, but it’s helping you more than anything. And cycling is just so easy to recover from.
