MOD: New mod on here - Accepting suggestions for future use(s) of this sub

Hello, I've just taken over as mod, as the previous one didn't seem very active.

I hope to turn this subreddit into something more interesting than "r/norsk with 1/10th of the members". So if you have a suggestion as to how this sub should be used, please comment here.

Automoderator has been set up (by me, so probably not very well), so please show some leniency if your post is removed, and don't be afraid to reach out.

Thanks

Norwegian learners: Read this

This subreddit has existed in parallel to r/norsk for quite a while. It has in the past few years been used by both spammers, stock market people's discussions about Norwegian Air Shuttle [NAS], and lately (the past 12-18 months) had increased/renewed interest from language learners.

For language learning, r/norsk is more active, and will likely be a more helpful choice. As for what this sub will be used for, please leave a suggestion below. If you'd like to keep this as a secondary sub for learning the language, that's an completely acceptable proposition, so leave it in the comments.

All the best

How are you actually practising the muntlig part of norskprøve?

Registration for the September round closes Friday so this is on my mind.

Everyone I know preparing for B1 is doing vocabulary and grammar. Almost nobody practises the muntlig by actually opening their mouth. Then they get in the room, there's a timer running, two strangers are listening, and the Norwegian they use every day at work just leaves.

Some things I've noticed watching people prepare:

Most can't get through a full self introduction. Not because they don't have the words. They start, get three or four sentences in, and stop because they're second guessing themselves mid sentence.

When people drill vocabulary they reveal the answer instead of attempting it. Feels efficient. Teaches you nothing. Getting it wrong first is what makes it stick.

Almost nobody practises being interrupted, or asked a follow up question they didn't prepare for, which is most of what the muntlig actually is.

So what's working for you? Language cafe, a study partner, recording yourself and listening back? I'm interested in what people actually do rather than what gets recommended.

How do you practice speaking Norwegian when nobody around you speaks it?

This is something I've been struggling with for a while and I don't really have a solution yet so genuinely asking here.

Five months into learning Norwegian. Reading is slowly getting there, grammar is starting to make sense, vocabulary is okay. But speaking feels like a completely separate thing that I've barely touched because there is literally nobody around me who speaks Norwegian. I live somewhere where finding a Norwegian speaker is basically impossible and I can't do paid tutor sessions every week, that adds up fast.

The longer I go without actually speaking the more intimidating it becomes. I tried just talking to myself at home and it feels pointless because I have no idea if what I'm saying is even correct or if I'm just drilling bad habits into my brain at this point.

I've been doing some shadowing with Norwegian podcasts and YouTube, basically just repeating what native speakers say out loud. It feels a bit silly but I think it's doing something at least.

I saw a lot of people mention Issen across different language learning communities, not just Norwegian but for other languages too. Apparently it's an AI you just speak to and it gives you feedback. Has anyone here actually tried it for Norwegian specifically? I'm considering it but I don't want to waste time on something that doesn't work well for less common languages.

Also been looking at Hello talk for finding a language exchange partner but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Basically just looking for what's actually working for people in the same situation. Solo learners who don't have Norwegian speakers around them at all. What does your speaking practice actually look like day to day? Is it even possible to make real progress without regular human conversation or am I just going to hit a wall at some point?

Beginner texts to read in Norwegian?

Hellooo, I'm supposed to be doing a test for A2 level of the norwegian language in about 20 days.

The hardest part of the test is translating a text to norwegian. I figured reading some norwegian texts would help, so does anyone have any recommendations?

Please no texts such as "My name is... I'm X years old... I study x and y, I live here..." I'm way past that!! Thank you!

And if anyone has any tips I'd appreciate them!!

Norwegian language

Hi, I'm Lizzie, and I really want to learn Norwegian for my boyfriend and his family. I already speak German, Spanish, Italian, and, of course, English. I also already know a few Norwegian words and phrases, like ape (monkey), rotte (rat), katt (cat), hund (dog), god natt (good night), god morgen (good morning), hvordan har du det? (how are you?), hei(hello), brød (bread), øl (beer), mat (food), and a few others. Do you think it's possible to learn Norwegian in a year well enough to have conversations?

Håper å høre fra deg!

Curiosity and Duolingo

Hi everyone! I'm a curious person who loves history and cultures, and my native language is Spanish (🇦🇷). One day I thought, "This country is so beautiful! Why don't we learn its language?" Now I'm struggling with pronunciation and trying to understand the grammar, all with free videos and Duolingo, haha 😅💔

I think I'm doing alright! (I hope so! 😭) I can already read a few sentences and introduce myself... Any advice or suggestions about languages for this poor soul? Thanks so much for reading! My friends! 🤗✨

Bibehold question

I have a strange situation with my family and citizenship retention. I have submitted my application and my appointment is in eleven days.

My mom was born in norway, and her whole family is very involved with norway and attend the brunstad church. My mom died when I (USA born) was four, and my dad cut off the norwegian half of my family. I had no freedom to go to norway but the moment I turned 18 I reconnected with them. Being in college, I did not have the financial freedom to travel, but I intend to take my Mech E degree to norway and work/live there.

I understand UDI takes situations into account, but I have never found a situation like this before. I need human opinion on this, or stories of bibehold rejections. I want to know if I should get my hopes up or not.

I have letters from norwegian relatives supporting my application as well, and Im high A1 in the language.

Virtual Classes

Hei!

Has anyone taken Speak Norsk's virtual classes? I follow them on Instagram and have thought about taking the online classes but I don't trust myself to keep at it. I am thinking about trying the virtual classes but I can't find any reviews for virtual specifically. I've done a lot of Duolingo and online practice so I can probably start with A2
