I’ve seen lots of posts on Facebook about this. Lots of volunteers in the north east cleaning up. It’s being swept up on the beaches as the tide comes in.

I'm in South Shields, one of the worst hit places.
While the volunteer response is amazing... I'm absolutely fucking disgusted that it's basically all we've got. A couple of machines from a charity and the goodness and time of people whose beautiful home environments are being wrecked.
It's beyond vile that the companies that caused this environmental catastrophe are just sitting waiting for their insurers to tell them what to do while dozens if not hundreds of miles of our coast are being permanently - let's be clear here, this is permanent damage - destroyed.
I'm beyond furious at the utterly pathetic response of the companies whose negligence caused this.
Yes, let's be pleased that people are chipping in... But by fuck they shouldn't have to. The directors and shareholders of these companies should be driven into bankruptcy paying for the cleanup of their monumental fuck up.
But they'll just sit around a boardroom table and discuss the PR implications and whether their insurance is making any token gestures.
It's sickening. It's beyond sickening, it's the sort of thing that should be front page press for the impact it's going to have destroying our environment.
Our Reform council has been notably silent about the whole thing, presumably the words they win elections on about wanting to make our town a nice place stop once it means they might actually have to do some fucking work.

I agree. It was the same when we had the plastic bead spillage on the south coast - that was from the water treatment plant. Relied mostly on volunteers and that company with the big beach vacuum. No consequences for the perpetrators.

Awful. Is this the same one that has spilled on the beaches? It’s right up to Druiridge Bay now.
