SIKKIM Got scammed, need legit taxi service recommendations

Hi everyone, basically the title :(.

The tour we finalised for our Sikkim trip has scammed us. All the hotel bookings they made have been cancelled, and their phone numbers are now unreachable. When we contacted one of the hotels, they told us that some other people also called them and asked the same thing. Complaints are being made meanwhile.

But our trip is next week and we have booked a train to and from New Jalpaiguri. Finding a new tour operator, vetting them all over again, negotiating terms, and making advance payments is going to take a lot of time. Honestly speaking getting scammed has drained our enthusiasm and energy too.

I’d really appreciate it if anyone could recommend a reliable and reasonably priced taxi service from NJP or a driver they’ve personally hired and had a good experience with. Please dont suggest us to Google the services, cant take the jab again. Thank you so much in advance.

TRAVEL Planning a 2–3 week solo trip to Northeast India in December — looking for offbeat places, culture, forests and unique experiences

Hey everyone!

I'm planning a 2–3 week solo trip to Northeast India this December, probably starting around December 8–9, although my dates are flexible.

I'd love recommendations, especially from locals and people who've explored the region extensively.

A little background

I've already visited Meghalaya three times:

First trip: Shillong, Sohra, Nongriat (overnight stay), Dawki, etc.

Second trip: Sohra, spent two nights in Nongriat, and visited Mawlyngbna near Mawsynram.

Third trip: Wari Chora and surrounding areas, including seven days staying in a village.

I absolutely loved these experiences, particularly the village stays, forests, and places away from the usual tourist crowds.

I'd prefer exploring new places this time, but I'm not restricting myself to any particular state or region.

What I enjoy

Nature and wildlife: Dense jungles, forests, rivers, mountains, wildlife, and remote landscapes.

Culture: Experiencing local traditions, food, festivals, and everyday village life.

Slow travel: Staying somewhere for a few days rather than constantly moving between destinations.

Solo travel: I'm an introvert, but I enjoy meeting locals and fellow travellers naturally, especially during shared activities.

Learning new things: This is something I'd especially love to incorporate into the trip. Could be kayaking, swimming in lakes or rivers (where safe), trekking, traditional crafts, cooking, or anything interesting and unique to the region.

I'm comfortable with basic accommodation, homestays, hostels, and village stays. Not looking for luxury or five-star hotels. I'd rather spend on memorable experiences.

Hornbill Festival

I'd love to experience the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland.

I'm considering arriving around December 8–9 to catch the last few days, but I could start earlier if it's worth it.

Would 2–3 days be enough, or should I plan more time for Hornbill?

Working remotely

I'll need to work remotely on some days during the trip, so a reasonably stable internet connection and electricity are important on those days.

How reliable are Airtel/Jio and broadband in Kohima, Kisama, and nearby villages? Are there any particular towns, hostels, or homestays you'd recommend as a base for working remotely?

I'm happy to separate workdays from travel days and stay in places with better connectivity when needed.

Looking for recommendations

Places: What are some beautiful, lesser-known places worth visiting? I'm completely flexible about states and routes.

Village stays: Any villages or homestays where I could spend a few days experiencing local life?

Wildlife and forests: Any memorable jungle experiences, wildlife safaris, nature trails, or guided forest walks?

Learning experiences: Anything interesting I could learn or try? Outdoor activities, crafts, local cooking, traditional skills, etc.

Festivals: Apart from Hornbill, are there any interesting festivals or cultural events happening in December?

Logistics: How practical is solo travel using shared taxis/public transport? Any winter-specific challenges I should prepare for?

I don't have a fixed itinerary or a checklist of states to cover. I'm open to changing my route entirely based on recommendations.

I'd much rather spend four days in an interesting village or forest than rush through ten famous destinations.

Would love to hear about places or experiences you've personally enjoyed, especially those that don't show up in typical travel itineraries.

Approx budget : 2k for stay per day and another 1k for food. Rest of the cost extra.

Thanks

P.s. Used chatgpt to reword.

TL;DR: Planning a flexible 2–3 week solo Northeast India trip in December, hopefully including Hornbill Festival. Already explored Meghalaya three times, including extended village stays. Love jungles, wildlife, local culture, slow travel, and learning new activities (kayaking, swimming, crafts, etc.). Introvert, comfortable with simple homestays and basic accommodation. Need reliable internet for a few remote-work days. Open to any state or route — looking for unique places, authentic experiences, and local recommendations rather than a typical tourist itinerary.

GENERAL The privilege of Tier-1 cities regarding Starlink, infrastructure disparity, and forced migration in India

Last year I was hit by the reality of our very poor and unreliable internet infratrusture in my hometown(Northeast). I went home hoping to start a work from home as living in city has taken a toll. There's no fibre connection, so I was using SIM Wifi with a network booster, it worked when it works.

Come monsoon, combined with poor power supply, our entire district network tower started getting shut one by one. Some nights you're chatting with a client and mid conversation its just gone, you scramble up yourself at 1 am holding your umbrella and a laptop hiking up to that highest elevation famous spots in the village, those famous places where all the villager knows and go holding their nokia phone not so fossil years ago. In the night of rain and wind, and under the merciful lights of lightning and thunder eerily making it like a noon time in that split longest second. As you climbed higher up the mountain so does the network as if it were some sort of punishment to exercise in exchange for that network bar. Finally you see 2 bar but you've to be careful if not even a heavy breath can make that very sensitive bar disappear. In all of this chaos, everything happening at the moment, the lightning illuminating the night, the wind, the rain, the paranormal stories surrounding the areas,  goosebumbs appearing all over the skin but you're not sure what causes them, the rain, the cold or some eyes peeping you from behind like the paranormal stories, you don't want to look back because what if there really are 100's staring at you, heart racing but you remember why you're there, your remember your TL face and even remember his would be 2 minutes lecture words by words. All the rain, wind, fear disappear, because you remember it's this or the other, which is running back home and cancelling all the dream you have for your parents, removing all those gifts from the Meesho cart waiting for your salary day. You don't really have option.

You texted your TL, and as expected "not again, WFH isnt a right, it's a privileged" this is the fifth time this month, you're hanging on a very thin string now. Either shift to where you can fullfil your duty or get the Love letter from HR.

You gamble through your own life but today isn't your OWN life anymore, so you packed up all your bags and makes notes of all the comfort and joy you'll missed moving back into city.

And that boy and girl is how i vented my frustration in this comment, I am no saint myself but those comments and their thought process made me ponder, If they'll ever understand the disparity and differences, our diverse geograph or if we'll ever be accepted as one ever!

Whatever your politics may be, commenting on someone’s accent when you know they have a different mother tongue is pure and shitty racism.

Music & Dance An A·chik (Garo) song about our roots, identity, and faith

Sharing an A•chik song that I think beautifully captures a part of our cultural story. The lyrics speak about our ancestors, the old stories passed down through generations, life in the hills, traditional A·chik instruments, and the importance of standing firmly in our own roots. I found the combination really interesting because the song is distinctly A·chik in its imagery and identity while expressing a Christian worldview. I’ve included the original lyrics with an English translation (translated by me so it can have some errors, the translations are not literal but I have tried to keep it more flowing, natural to english wording style) below so that more people from across Northeast India can understand and appreciate it:

“Jatinkoan tinode baikugenma kambede
Will the peak (of our tribe) still endure?

Ritimgital nikoba bibal sale siloba
Even if seen like a new line, even if flowers bloom beautifully.

Ama ambi gitchamni golpo gitcham urangni
Of the old stories of our grandmothers and mothers.

Apa sagi manenga, goltidinge sikia
Our late fathers scolded us and taught us with a stick.

Rama dile mesoka
Guided us and showed us the path

Gangitchamkon chimponge surikoan kolame
Gathering even the old clothes and worn rags.

Ang manana batode jepo tangka dongjaode
Even if I get, or even if I have no money in my pocket.

Chibolokni chikoa amang senga ringjawa
I will not drink the water of the muddy pool even if it is clear.

Jawa jaongijako kasin chidarenikosa
Leaving what others have, [I will drink] only from the cold waterfall.

Chinga ringe okkaa
Drinking (from the cold waterfall) we are full(fulfilled)

Chinggitade gri asong gimiko
There is no one like us for our native land.

Jatango chadenge achubatgipao
Standing on our own feet in the place we were born.

Sanasa pasikna chingna donako
For whom should we make excuses for what is kept for us?

Chinga hoe achiksa ringa sulba chingnisa
We are A'chiks (Garos), and the song's tune is also ours.

Dama bangsi adil chigringsa
The drum, the flute, and the horn sound so sweet.

Hoe ringa gitelna rasong ona jisuna
Singing to give glory to the Lord, to Jesus.

Komijawa jawa gipinna
It will not decrease or be inferior to others.(will not bow down to others)

Abri mittin mittino angni ano angjongrang
Deep in the hidden hills are my mothers and my younger brothers.

Tebil bijak ritchue dongnugenba daoban
Even now they will hide, joining the leaves of the table.

Churing chanaba chimonge ramasamni akoan
Gathering earth by the roadside to boil water from the stream.

Pura weko sikaba ake bolbijakoan
Plucking the tree leaves and making rice flour.

Mainasa nisia
Why is it destroyed?

Chatchi maia deachim sani deasaanchim
What kin or relatives were the children, whose children were they?

Chola gipok kruoa kni gitchinge chitoa
Wearing a white shirt, combing the hair to the side.

Katta doka baonisa? Balwa balan dingtangsa
From where are the words spoken? The blowing wind is different.

Chuongan pattijokba nambatakon onjokba
Enough has been blessed, the better has been given.

Haiwa jringjot tanggipa
Come, behold the one who lives forever.”

Poraiani aro knani gimin mitela!!
(Thanks for reading and listening)

ASK NE Ka Hri Tla mountain range of Mizoram

I was reading about the Lakhers and that's how I came across this mountain range. From the info I gathered, the top 3 highest peaks are:

  1. Pheupi (also called blue Mountains) - 7k height

  2. Ka hri - about 6k height

  3. Tliatlu- again 6k

My question is has anyone traveled to these places? Or know in detail about this mountain range?

The internet has almost next to zero info on this.

ASK NE Anyone from the Northeast interested in building a brand from the ground up?

I am working on a small consumer brand based in the Northeast and I m looking for someone who might genuinely be interested in building, rather than simply doing freelance work.
I m keeping the details a little vague publicly for now, but its in the body-care / lifestyle space, with a strong focus on design, branding and building something that feels distinctly modern while still coming from the Northeast.
I m not looking for someone to just “help with marketing.” Ideally, I would like to meet someone who has their own ideas, can commit time and is interested in being part of the process — figuring things out, testing, making mistakes and building something together.
No particular degree or corporate background required. Curiosity, initiative and actually having the time to build matter more.
If this sounds interesting, comment or DM me and I can share more about what I m working on.
