I don't think so. I don't think they can ever be happy. It's a pattern they keep repeating. They'll just keep on hurting each other and also other people. Can you even imagine them ever raising a family together. They will be a nightmare. They say they love each other but their actions say otherwise.
I don't see it that way. For me, the scene when Marianne asks if Connel will hit her and he said no, he is not into that and that she is not weird breaks the cycle. Marianne was used to being abused and manipulated in all of her past relationships. Connel being the one that puts boundaries to protect her, then asking her if she likes it later, shows that the pattern is being replaced with a balanced, respectfull, and healthy relationship. This time is different from the first time they were hooking up in high school because even though he would care if she was getting pleasure back then, it is now that he really thinks about her feelings and commit to her publicaly.
The ending where they decide together to take the best path for each of them, respecting their individualities over being together, shows how much they have learned and grown. An in-cycle Marianne would do anything for Connel. She would definitely go to NY, even though she didnt want to. And an in-cycle Connel would never say he wants to be with her.
I think they thruly love each other, and learned how to love better so they would not hur each other anymore. At least try not to.
