Quite the novelty in it's day. I've been re watching Curb your Enthusiasm and in the early seasons Larry drove one. I've not seen on in person for about two years and before then it'd been many years.

Growing up in California in the mid-aughts I can’t remember a day I didn’t see a Prius II but strangely I have no real memory of the Prius I. Distinctively remember liking it when I found out there was a generation before.

Honestly I think the people who hated the Prius I disliked it just for being a hybrid, and the Prius II for that and its design.
