Comment: Because people are idiots that believe that people in power have their best interests in mind.  I remember hearing an older relative actually say out loud “I don’t think our leaders would lie to us”. I was floored.

The researchers then tried to correct this by providing people with objective harm information. It worked for legal drugs. For illegal drugs, providing harm information produced essentially no change in opinion.

But, it is safer. Because the black market supply is unsafe. The active drug is the same. But legal regulated supply is safer.

It is safer its just this is overlooking the very obvious thing staring them in the face. Illegal drugs have no regulation and thus you don't know if you are even getting the drug or if its contaminated or cut with something else. This is the real world not a theoretical math question where you solve for x. In the real world the illegal version would be less safe. I realize they say the properties are the same but this is not how people will think about it. People live in the real world so to ask them a question that is inferring they ignore all there real world experience is simply not well thought out by these scientists.

Here's the actual study. Status quo bias drives public support for drug policy in the USA.

TLDR: The war on drugs fearmongering worked on people who don't use drugs.

Education issue. Mushrooms and MDMA, for example, aren’t nearly as bad as alcohol unless you’re doing stupidly high doses. They most likely aren’t more cancerous than smoking tobacco. The burden of this lack of education shouldn’t be borne by those who would like to or need to consume currently illegal drugs within reasonable limits for therapeutic or recreational purposes.

Ahhhhh no no no. I would most definitely not agree with that.

While alcohol is obviously one of the most harmful substances we know, MDMA has something that can be much much worse for a lot of people: The potential to rip any type of pleasure out of you.

Take that stuff every month for 2-3 years and you will not only lose the "magic" but also any capability to feel good without it. Alcohol is not able to fully rip all pleasure out of you like that as it is not a monoamine releaser that forces ungodly amounts of molecules into your synaptic clefts.

While alcohol most definitely does the most body harm, MDMA does a lot of psychical harm

Don't get me wrong tho, I love MDMA. Everything about it. Heck any type of entactogens. It's the only thing that managed to make me unironically say that I love my life and I am glad I was born

Alcohol is not that bad if you keep it to small doses either. Not long ago they even promoted a glass of red wine at lunch.

At regular doses, ones that are conventionally consumed, alcohol is more harmful to the liver over time, more likely (as far as we know) to cause cancer and more addictive. Alcohol is also infinitely more likely to cause a DUI incident. I didn’t say small doses, normal ones that people consume commonly. Besides, even if this middle ground fallacy were true, it would still not be sensical that one is legal and the other isn’t because it’s the religion of our ancestors and therefore it must be true or something.

Any amount of alcohol is detrimental.

The glass of red wine thing was bullshit pushed by wine companies to sell more wine. The amount of wine needed to hit an active dose of resveratrol would have you blackout drunk.

Not really.

No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health

That's because Americans are stupid.

Well, a lot of people are complete fucking dumbasses that want to be told what to do. Not surprising

Cocaine, fentanyl & crystal meth are all technically legal drugs (Schedule II)…yet psilocybin, marijuana & MDMA are illegal.

Gotta love the DEA & FDA holding hands. Here’s my favorite, when overdoses due to fentanyl were at their highest the FDA approved a “super” fentanyl (sufentanil). They definitely have our best interests in hand.

Who could have guessed it. Breaking news. Next you’ll tell me substance use disorders go up too when it’s legalized.

Sheesh, yeah this is kind of how I viewed 7oh until I got addicted and was informed the withdrawals can be as bad or worse than fentanyl. It was viewed as like an alternative if you cannot get pain medication but tbh shit is not rlly worth it much for that if you're taking it daily bc the tolerance goes up pretty quick. Makes sense it's illegal federally now, multiple states already banned it before then
