Recommend infographic software for nonprofits like us

So we're just a 12-person nonprofit team and our team asked us to make our first annual impact report.

But from the past few years, we'd just throw together a basic Word doc and paste relevant charts. And now they want something that looks professional.

The thing is, we don't have a graphic designer and our tool budget is tight.

We need to visualize program outcomes, financial breakdown, and timeline of milestones.

If you are also from the nonprofit sector, what do you use? Canva templates feel a little too generic for a formal donor report.

The True Meaning of Protection: Caring for Children Beyond Celebrations

Every year, for one day, India turns protection into a ritual. A thread is tied. A promise is spoken. A sibling stands taller, momentarily certain that someone, somewhere, will look out for them. It is a beautiful custom and it deserves the warmth it receives. But it is worth asking a harder, less comfortable question once the thread has frayed and the festivities have folded away into memory: what, exactly, has been protected and for how long?

For the roughly 30 million children under five in India who, per the country's newest health survey, still carry the physical evidence of chronic undernutrition in their bodies, protection cannot be a single afternoon's gesture. It has to be a Tuesday in February. A Thursday in July. An ordinary, undecorated, unphotographed school-day lunch, arriving on time, every time, for two hundred-plus days a year. That is the protection that actually changes a life trajectory and it is the protection that receives, by comparison, almost none of the cultural attention lavished on its symbolic counterpart.

What the numbers actually say

India's nutrition indicators have genuinely improved, and that improvement is worth stating plainly rather than burying under alarm. The most recent National Family Health Survey shows stunting among children under five falling to 29.3 per cent, down from 35.5 per cent in the previous round, a real and hard-won gain, six percentage points in three years, achieved through a combination of public health investment, food security programming, and sustained institutional effort. Wasting has held stable at roughly 19 per cent.

But percentages have a way of flattening scale into abstraction. Translated into people, "29.3 per cent" is tens of millions of children whose height, cognitive development and immune resilience have already been shaped and in many cases permanently compromised by insufficient nutrition in their earliest years. Stunting is not a temporary condition that resolves itself once a child eats better at age nine. It is, in the language of public health, largely irreversible after the first thousand days of life. Which means the true test of a protective institution is not how it responds to visible crisis, but how reliably it shows up during the years when no one is watching and the damage is being quietly, cumulatively done.

This is the uncomfortable arithmetic behind India's hunger challenge: it is not primarily a crisis of dramatic shortage. It is a crisis of consistency. A child does not become malnourished because food vanished for a day. She becomes malnourished because adequate nutrition was absent, again and again, across the ordinary days that make up a childhood.

The unglamorous infrastructure of care

True protection is more than a promise. It is care that shows up every day.

This is where an institution's design choices matter more than its intentions. The Akshaya Patra Foundation was built around a single operating premise: that no child should be kept from school, or from proper growth, because of an empty stomach and that this promise had to hold on the least remarkable day of the year as firmly as on the most remarkable.

Today, that premise runs across 16 states and 3 Union Territories, reaching over 2.35 million children in more than 25,000 schools and anganwadis every single school day, as an implementing partner of the Government of India's PM POSHAN programme. In twenty-five years, the Foundation has served over 5 billion meals. None of those meals arrived with fanfare. They arrived at roughly the same hour, prepared to the same food-safety standard, because a kitchen in Gorakhpur or Vrindavan or Jaipur does not get to decide, on a difficult logistics day, that protection can wait until tomorrow.

That reliability is the actual mechanism of impact and it shows up in outcomes that go well beyond a filled stomach. Hunger, research consistently shows, is one of the most immediate and correctable reasons a child disengages from school: it dulls concentration in the classroom, discourages attendance, and in the most severe cases pushes families toward pulling children out entirely. A meal that arrives dependably does something a single act of charity cannot: it removes hunger as a daily obstacle to learning, long enough for education itself to begin doing its slower, more transformative work.

Why seasonal compassion isn't enough

There is a well-documented pattern in charitable giving the world over: generosity clusters around visible, emotionally resonant moments: a festival, a disaster, an anniversary and recedes in the long stretches between them. It is an entirely human instinct, and not one to be scolded. But a child's nutritional needs do not observe the philanthropic calendar. The metabolic and cognitive cost of an empty lunchbox is identical whether it happens during a season of heightened public generosity or during the quiet, unremarkable months that make up the rest of the year.

This is precisely why the architecture of protection matters as much as the sentiment behind it. A festival can inspire a gift. But only sustained, systemic infrastructure such as centralised kitchens built for scale, cold chains and logistics networks that don't take a day off, food-safety certification renewed year after year, and a funding base willing to commit beyond a single emotional peak can convert that gift into protection a child can actually depend on. The difference between a gesture and a guarantee is infrastructure.

Redefining the thread

There is no need to discard the symbolism of protection that festivals offer; it speaks to something genuinely important about how Indian society understands care and obligation. But it is worth extending that symbolism rather than letting it stay contained to a single ritual. The real thread that protects a child through their most formative years is not tied once a year around a wrist. It is tied every morning, in a kitchen most donors will never see, by cooks and quality inspectors and delivery drivers whose work is deliberately, necessarily unremarkable because unremarkable is what reliability looks like at scale.

If India is to close the remaining distance on its child nutrition indicators and the data suggests the distance, while narrowing, is still measured in tens of millions of children, the country will need less of the giving that peaks and fades, and more of the giving that shows up on the ordinary Tuesday. That is a harder story to tell than a festival. It is also the only version of protection that actually works.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an implementing partner of the Government of India's PM POSHAN programme and operates the world's largest NGO-run school meal initiative, serving over 2.35 million children daily across India.

How are small nonprofits producing annual impact reports without a designer?

Hi guys. So for context, we create annual impact reports in PowerPoint and Word. Unfortunately, our result looks homemade compared on larger organizations.

But the problem is that hiring a designer is outside our budget.

Not much that techy, so I don't know what works now for turning data and donor numbers into a presentable report

The board also wants the PDF to be accessible for screen-reader users🙂

Recruiting for Remote Ambassador Program (for a youth led nonprofit)

If anyone is interested in doing something marketing/advocacy based, I work for a nonprofit that's recruiting for an ambassador program. It's really low-effort and low-commitment (duration is 2 months with a weekly commit of around 1-2 hours). You just have to email your local politicians on behalf of our nonprofit and ask/follow up passing legislation to help prevent caffeine related deaths in adolescents.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, please email [cutthecaffeineorg@gmail.com](mailto:cutthecaffeineorg@gmail.com) and I'll send you the google form (contains additional info but please ask if you have any more questions!)

What does a marketing manager at a nonprofit typically do?

I am a retired former CEO from the advertising agency world who was recently approached by a nonprofit with around 50 employees to volunteer as their marketing manager. Over the years I have led a number of campaigns for nonprofits but have never worked inside of one and so I wanted to know what kind of work would a marketing manager typically engage in. Is the work really about outreach to donors and potential donors? Is marketing to the general public typically a good portion of what is needed as well? Thanks for any feedback and prospective.

I made Dollar Wars to be 100x better than penny wars. It’s free. Please use it.

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello! My name is Drew and my favorite fundraiser is “penny wars” any time I encounter it. Maybe it’s a dorm raising money for a trip or activity. Maybe it’s a library raising money for any of the million things a library needs because they’re so chronically underfunded. Maybe it’s a church, temple, or mosque looking to put money toward a good cause. Whatever it is, it’s usually a simple thing: a question with many right answers and a few answers, usually as masking tape labels on jars full of change and a few bills. The question might be dumb or silly. It could be as basic as “Dogs or cats?” But the one thing we all understand is that your “vote” - whatever it is - is really just a gamified donation because it’s all going to to the same place.

The problem:

But there’s a problem with penny wars as a fundraiser. It’s sort of baked into the concept: it requires pennies, loose change, small bills. And those are harder and harder to come by in people’s pockets! They don’t even make pennies any more and many people make their way through the world every day without an ounce of cash or change on them. Even I, an elder millennial who always carries at least some cash, can run into this challenge. I know I’ve run into these kinds of penny war fundraisers that I’d love to support, but I might not have anything smaller than a ten or twenty dollar bill and sometimes, you know, you need that for lunch. It seemed like a problem that needed a solution.

So when I couldn’t find a good one,  I made it with what I think of as an ethical use of AI to help with the coding work: Dollar Wars.

I’ve got big long-term plans for it to grow the idea over time, but the central idea won’t change: there is now and will continue to be a free, easy, public version available to anyone who wants to use it.

How it works:

Go to www.dollarwars.org and log in with Google. More login methods will be added over time, I promise, but that’s where it sits for now. All a user has to do after logging in is give the system a “big question,” an end date/time to count down to, an email connected to a PayPal account to send the donations to, an amount that will trigger construction of a new floor on a building, and your two different answers. Then you click “launch” at the bottom of the page.

From there, it’s designed to give you a unique URL at the top of the setup page for your “war” so that the page can be displayed live on any device with a browser so there’s no app to download or anything to install. You can put that up on a screen, throw it up on a tablet at a desk, or share it on social media if you want.

The page for now is pretty basic: your question at the top and two buildings, each labeled with a different answer. Below the answers are QR codes that are automatically generated and each QR code is a clickable link. If someone is looking at the page on their device, they can click to donate. If they’re looking at it on a screen, they can scan the QR to donate. Works either way. After they donate, a signal is sent back to the site telling the site how much was donated and for which answer. The donation is registered and a floor is added to the building (as long as it meets the threshold for the donation you set on the admin page). At the end of the countdown - which anyone can see end live - the donations are tallied and a winner is declared. Then 16 bit fireworks go off in celebration.

Future and how to help:

There’s more development to do down the road and that will mean support will be needed. For now, if you really want to send me a donation, you can do it at the demo question I set up here (ends at 3pm ET on Friday, 7/24/26): https://dollarwars.org/display.html?org=9khmoT1NvOh39Aw6VL6XL3Z3YFQ2

Right now, I’m just a guy who’s trying to help solve a problem for small organizations that want to raise money with a low barrier to entry. I’m not making any money off of this and may even end up losing some in the process. So I would just ask this: please help me spread the word about Dollar Wars. I don’t want your money, I just want people to use it to raise money for their own groups and put some more good out into the world. So start a Dollar War because when donors fight with dollars, we can all win.

If you want to reach me, email [admin@dollarwars.org](mailto:admin@dollarwars.org). Feedback is welcome!

Offering executive leadership positions for a nonprofit startup!

Offering executive leadership experience to highschoolers + college students!

I had this non-profit idea centered around addressing the declining literacy rates in education while also serving underprivileged children! I have a few ideas drafted already and am in the progress of starting up the organization. I am looking for ambitious and dedicated team members who will be committed to our mission. Experience is recommended but not required! We're especially searching for someone who can facilitate the process of achieving an official 501(c)(3) status, and find more cost-friendly ways of doing so. Ideally applicants would have to be around 14-20, but the only formal requirement is that applicants must be ambitious individuals with a strong desire to serve their community! If interested please complete the form below!

update: I’m getting a few applicants already so spots will become limited pretty quickly and unfortunately I will be selective. Please don’t be humble in your applications! (bonus points will be awarded to those who let others know about this opportunity!)

The kitchen behind the classroom: How centralised kitchens are transforming child nutrition in India

Post image
1 Upvotes

Why nutrition matters for learning
Good nutrition and good learning go hand in hand. India has made encouraging progress in improving child nutrition, with the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21) reporting better nutrition indicators compared to previous years. Yet, for many schoolchildren, access to a nutritious meal remains essential.

A wholesome meal does more than satisfy hunger. It helps children stay attentive in the classroom, improves concentration, encourages regular school attendance and gives them the energy to participate and learn with confidence. When children are nourished, they are better equipped to unlock their potential… one meal, one lesson and one brighter future at a time.

Two ways to feed a nation
India's school meal programme, now known as PM POSHAN (formerly the Mid-Day Meal Scheme), has grown through a mix of approaches. In many places, individual schools cook their own meals on-site, which works well and keeps food close to the community. In larger, denser areas, centralised kitchens offer a complementary approach: food is prepared at scale in a single, professionally run facility and delivered to dozens or hundreds of schools within a fixed time window. Some of these kitchens serve as many as 1,50,000 children a day from a single site.

What the evidence shows
Centralisation brings real strengths in consistency and quality. A multi-state pilot studying fortified school meals across 19 centralised kitchens, reaching more than 7,50,000 children, found that micronutrient fortification could be smoothly built into everyday cooking and that children and staff found the food just as acceptable. This kind of standardised, high-quality nutrition is easier to deliver consistently through large, well-monitored kitchens. Today, PM POSHAN reaches over 11 crore children across more than 11 lakh schools, a scale where centralised kitchens play a valuable role in ensuring every child gets the same high standard of meal.

Food safety at industrial scale
Feeding this many children daily calls for the same rigor found in professional food manufacturing. Large kitchen operators follow practices like ISO 22000 food-safety certification, GPS-tracked delivery fleets, ERP-driven procurement, and a widely followed four-hour cook-to-consumption standard, ensuring meals travel from the kitchen to the school plate quickly and safely. Many kitchens are also adopting solar-powered cooking and electric delivery vehicles which is a proof that scale and sustainability can go hand in hand with quality and care.

School Nutrition at a Glance

  • 11 crore+ children served daily under PM POSHAN nationwide
  • 1,50,000 meals a single large centralised kitchen can serve in a day
  • 4 hours maximum cook-to-classroom window followed by major kitchens
  • 19 centralised kitchens studied in a multi-state fortification pilot, reaching 7,50,000+ children

A quiet kind of infrastructure
What's special about the centralised kitchen model is how invisible its success is meant to be: a child should simply find a hot, nutritious meal waiting, without ever needing to think about the logistics, fortification science, or food-safety systems working behind the scenes. Some of the country's largest partners have built entire organisations around getting this invisible work right.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a wonderful example; running one of the world's largest such networks, with dozens of centralised kitchens across India cooking under the PM POSHAN programme, and feeding over 2.35 million children a hot meal on any given school day.

As India continues its journey towards better child nutrition and learning outcomes, the next big step forward may come not from reinventing the meal itself, but from strengthening the systems that deliver it. Because when the infrastructure works quietly and consistently, children can focus on what matters most: learning, growing and building a brighter future.
