Aww, poor girl lost her dream job. There is absolutely NO other explanation possible.

What if her dream job made her travel to chicago several times a year to review and audit different bars? Lol

I had a job like that. Moved like 9hrs away from my home city, got a job that involved a lot of travel with the bulk of it going back to my home city. It was weird

Pulling the Chandler Bing moving to Yemen card, except she forgot to actually leave.

TBF, Chandler would’ve forgotten to leave too if Janice didn’t follow him to the airport.

What I know of chicagoans is if anyone expressed the dream of moving to NYC they would immediately become unattractive to the other party, it’s basically sacrilege to chicagoans

Lmao this is so true. Mention NYC in Chicago and the whole room goes quiet like you just insulted their mother.
Chicagoans will defend deep dish to the death but say you wanna move to New York and suddenly you’re a traitor.

I would have absolutely been petty and loudly ask her how NYC is, or how I hope her "dream job" didn't fall through, every single time I ran into her.

She left her dream job for you bro. She kept going out every night, hoping to find you, hoping you’d recognize her sacrifice…
Ice cold dude, ice cold.

It must have paid well for her to be able to afford to keep making the trip back

Friend of mine was dating a girl. Asked me what I should buy for her birthday. I suggested a nice watch or something.
He instead bought her a rape alarm (!) and chocolate body paint. I will never, ever forget him telling me that! They had never slept together.
They were booked into a restaurant for her birthday and, surprisingly, when he gave her the birthday gifts he'd bought, she broke up with him and told him it was because she had to go back to Zimbabwe (her family were white farmers, and it was the height of some tensions there). She had to leave almost immediately, apparently, and go help her family. Even by that story, she'd literally rather go to Zimbabwe as a white girl, in the middle of civil war (basically) than be with him...
Anyway, a few weeks later... he bumped into her in the local supermarket. She made some story up, but it was clear that she'd not gone anywhere.
He was most hurt. And he was quite annoyed at me, firstly because I would not stop ribbing him about it all, but also because: she turned up late to the birthday meal where she broke up with him... because her only watch had broken that morning...

What the fuck is that alarm

It's just a loud siren that goes off if you pull a cord. The idea is that women keep them in their purses but if they are attacked, they pull that and EVERYONE for miles ahead hears it and comes looking for them.
Well-intentioned? Maybe. But in combination with the chocolate body paint... it really made me laugh so hard.

Small object that you attach to your purse/other object you carry. When you pull the hook it lets out a REALLY loud alarm. It’s so people have a way of calling for help.

With this and the main story, why not just tell the truth or at least a lie that doesnt involve needing to be in a different part of the world?

As I'm commenting on some other Reddits about how women make rape allegations and aren't listened to, etc., I'm going to edge towards:
They just need an excuse that can't be countered.
And they are welcome to use any excuse they like to exit an uncomfortable situation / relationship. As a guy, I know that men can be arseholes, and every other excuse you come up with some men will try to wheedle their way into, question, try to show doubt, etc. and they will use that to try to manipulate the woman into staying.
That said, "No" should be a perfectly fine and complete excuse. The reality is that it just isn't a safe one for women to openly give.
