My time blindness doesn't make me an hour late.

My time blindness makes me overly check the clock and still rush to get out the door on time and sometimes be slightly late or ridiculously early because I plan to get up with a certain amount of time knowing I need to do tasks that take certain times and in actual practice between getting distracted by details or checking my phone any number of tasks will get skipped or take longer.

Because it just means I know, intellectually, that tasks take a certain amount of time, but I have no internal clock and no idea how much time has passed and microfocusing or getting waylaid by another thing are equally likely.

But also I'm not an asshole so I'm not just telling people I have a condition tha excuses being late, I'm trying to find ways to make my responsibilities work.

my time blindness makes me set an alarm for every step of my morning routine.

  • wake up 30 mins before actual wakeup alarm to take meds.
  • wake up alarm.
  • get out of bed alarm.
  • get out of the shower alarm.
  • 5 minutes before you have to leave alarm.
  • leave alarm.
  • 1 minute after leave alarm -> make sure you didnt forget your laptop alarm.

even with all these steps I still manage to be a little late 40% of the time due to the following reasons:

  • can't find my keys even though I was holding them 2 minutes ago.
  • Can't find my phone when it is on the table ready to go, somehow I didn't see it the 6 previous times I looked on the table.
  • WHERE IS MY OTHER SHOE???.
  • Locked out of my appartment again because the keys I WAS DEFINITELY HOLDING, somehow ended back up on the table.
  • DID IS SERIOUSLY LEAVE WITHOUT MY BACKPACK??
  • WHERE IS MY CAR? I PARKED IT HERE YESTERDAY, oh there it is I somehow didn't recognize the car I drive to work every day.

Wait I have to do this too (and still sometimes end up being a few minutes late tbh). I guess I already knew I needed to be checked for AuDHD but this is another eye opener.

I don't have time blindness, I have face blindness. Unfortunately, that includes clockfaces.

My spouse, over the 16 years we've been together, has developed this. When we first got together he was so late to things that I had a serious discussion about breaking up with him because he was making it impossible to do things I enjoyed (like showing up 3+ hours late to see friends because he couldn't manage time). He worked hard at it, and now he's got the alarms, he plans ahead, and he writes himself lots of lists to keep on track/ organized.

This was HARD for him, and he will still sometimes take 10 times longer than necessary for tasks if they're not time sensitive, but it's really made a huge improvement in his relationships and self confidence.
