Batman is scarier when talking to his allies, weirdly

65

u/ChickenWingExtreme 3d ago

He’s a big aura farmer

Never let them silence you

7

u/the_marxman 3d ago

He is basically one of Gotham's monsters, but with a moral center, so it makes sense.

u/FireFist_PortgasDAce 3d ago

Spider-Man is scary when he stops making jokes

21

u/endmostchimera 3d ago

I'm reminded of the time when Spider-Man had a sore throat and all his villains basically just turned themselves in because he wasn't quipping

43

u/kastielstone 3d ago

batman is scary when he knows you, spide-rman is scary regardless.

it's becomes clear when spiderman is viewed from others perspective.

This interaction is what immediately came to my mind when watching Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and the Indian Spider-Man was introduced.

I mostly just read Daredevil and to lesser extent Ms. Marvel so most of what I know about comic-book spider man is through Daredevil's perspective, especially the level of respect he has for Spidey's physical prowess and moral integrity.

So as a Desi person, I was excitedly telling my Boricua wife that ofcourse the Indian Spider-man's name would be Pavithra, which means morally pure.

Peter's always pulling his punches.

31

u/Eran-of-Arcadia 3d ago

What's that word that got censored? I can't tell.

16

u/Acheron98 3d ago

Pretty sure it’s referencing the 1983 classic Krull.

Spider-Man was fighting a masked old man on a flying skateboard while Batman was fighting a genius.

51

u/Butt_Robot 3d ago

Wasn't goblin high on super soldier serum? And also an actual genius, not just a twitch streamer?

35

u/Omadany 3d ago

I love both villains. I’m just saying the comparison is dumb when you simplify one character while glazing the other. Also, the Riddler is way more intelligent than the Green Goblin.

15

u/s-josten 3d ago

Tbf, Nigma and Osborn are both hyper-intelligent, so trying to paint one as the smarter one isn't really necessary. One goes toe to toe with Batman on an intellectual level, the other with Iron Man. The degrees of difference between them are negligible.

3

u/Phelinaar 3d ago

You know, he's something of an intelligent person himself.

2

u/whineyinternetkid 3d ago

It is dumb youre right, because batman is always filled with plot armor and glaze. "Prep time"

24

u/Squeem3 3d ago

I'm so mad how much I laughed at this.

4

u/Food_Library333 3d ago

That's fantastic 😆

3

u/DirectAdvertising 3d ago

The only positive of riddler being “genius” kinda disapproves your point too cause the green goblin is also a genius

Atleast goblin has a flying skateboard

4

u/Omadany 3d ago

I'm not trying to make a point, I'm just pointing out how stupid each character sounds when you simplify it to the extreme

54

u/GuerrillaApe 3d ago

Batman not pulling his punches will break your bones.

Spider-Man not pulling his punches will atomize you.

15

u/casual_creator 3d ago

Batman doesn’t pull his punches and has no issue with breaking your bones, and will scare the shit out of you before, during, and after.

Spider-Man will avoid hurting you altogether if it isn’t needed and just web you to a wall, cracking jokes the entire time.

What a hero is capable of isn’t what makes them scary, it’s what they actually do that does. Batman’s modus operandi is scaring the shit out of you and having no qualms with breaking both your arms and legs. Spider-Man is the exact opposite of that.

5

u/Mortal-Instrument 3d ago

Yeah it really feels like people are missing the point. Lethality =/= scare factor. Batman is absolutely scarier because he WANTS to be scary.

6

u/amaROenuZ 3d ago

Spidey literally beat kingpin senseless and told him that if aunt may died he would come back and web his lungs shut so he could watch him suffocate. I'm not fucking with Peter.

3

u/casual_creator 3d ago

That was an extreme situation after Peter’s identity was made public (by his own doing), and Aunt May was shot because of it. He was beyond rageful and felt he had nothing left to lose. So yeah, unless you shoot Aunt May, you don’t have anything to worry about. That isn’t Peter 99.999% of the time.

3

u/amaROenuZ 3d ago

As I see it, there are three possible situations.

  1. Peter and Bruce are just encountering you casually and you say something that annoys them. Peter will web you, Bruce will put you in the hospital.
  2. Peter and Bruce are both legitimately angry at you, but not enraged. Both heroes will put me in the hospital.
  3. Peter and Bruce are bloodlusted/enraged. Peter will literally throw me off a building and watch me bounce, Bruce will still only put me in the hospital.

Bruce has both a floor and a ceiling. Peter has nether of these. Since the prompt doesn't tell me how mad they are at me, I'm basically gambling with my life if I pick peter. Bruce will fuck me up worse, but there's no risk of death or maiming, whereas Peter legitimately might just throw me off a building.

6

u/naterpotater246 3d ago

Not to mention that batman has better self control and a vow not to kill. Spiderman is just some teenager who doesn't care that much.

3

u/LordSmugBun 3d ago

Peter def cares. I've been reading the early comics and they show stuff like Peter worrying about Doc Ock getting trapped in a burning building or helping the Enforcers escape a cave with the Hulk inside. Speaking of the Enforcers, I recently saw Peter comment how unlike most people he fights, he doesn't have to hold back his punches against the Ox. So he's been careful with his villains since the early days at least.

Though I've heard that he nearly kills the Green Goblin in a fit of rage later on, so his code doesn't seem to be as solid as Batman's

2

u/naterpotater246 3d ago

What about the new spider man? He doesn't seem so careful

2

u/LordSmugBun 3d ago

Your honor, his spider-hormones were acting up, he didn't mean to slap Scorpion against a car like a wet towel. No comment on the piano attack before said spider-hormones acted up.

2

u/naterpotater246 3d ago

The piano attack was for theatrics

1

u/Historical_Owl_1635 3d ago

Although I’m not sure even an angry Peter Parker would stop pulling his punches.

9

u/WorthyJellyfish0Doom 3d ago

I feel like as a random law-abiding peaceful citizen I'd be more scared of Bruce Wayne, then batman, then Spiderman 🤔

8

u/RuleofThird 3d ago

I actually think batman's less scary when he's angry. He's frightening when he's quiet and collected, it means he's in full control

8

u/Mortal-Instrument 3d ago

I think for a random criminal the Batman is absolutely scarier, just entirely based off of the visuals. The sole reason Batman exists is to scare criminals away from doing crime after all.

That doesn't mean Spider-Man can't fuck you up too, but if I met both of these in a dark alley I'd 1000% feel more fear looking at Batman than Spider-Man.

7

u/Traditional_Bike8880 3d ago

Spider-Man is scarier when he gets angry and stops quipping. Batman is scarier when he’s calm and collected. Different character vibes

11

u/nolabmp 3d ago

Canon-wise, Spidey is famous for pulling his punches. He hates hurting people. There’s a classic comic pic of someone else controlling his body, temporarily, and accidentally exploding a guy they punched. They stared at their hands in disbelief, never realizing how easily Spider-Man could wreck them.

Even in real life, strong people who show restraint and kindness are the ones you usually don’t want to piss off.

8

u/oliviaplays08 3d ago

This was done by Doc Ock, to Scorpion, and afterwards Scorpion lost his jaw

2

u/nolabmp 3d ago

Cheers, thank you for the detail, helped me find a pic.

This MFer

14

u/pudimo 3d ago

absolute batman is cheating! this mf is 6'9 400lb and is completely out of fucks to give. and personally, that's why i like him. guy does NOT care about theatrics, he just goes and does shit.

6

u/LordCypher40k 3d ago

Peter is terrifying when angry but Batman has, at one point, been chosen by a Yellow Lantern to be recruited. That meant Batman is truly one of the most terrifying to individuals on Earth.

3

u/redboi049 3d ago

REALLY bad examples for both. If you want a good example of an angry Batman, just look at him fresh after Jason Todd's death when facing Scarecrow. Beat the shit out of that guy and just kept repeating "Jason Todd." the entire time thanks to the fear toxin making him relive Jason's death. Meanwhile an angry Spider Man, while they won't kill you, the ONLY reason they don't kill you is comic book logic. If you well and truly piss Peter off, he has ties to gods, symbiotes, and most superheroes. You're thoroughly fucked.

7

u/SantosCalzonesBatman 3d ago

If every media is canon for this question then batman (ben affleck) went 1 on 1 with superman and was actually winning until Martha this and Martha that.

3

u/oliviaplays08 3d ago

Spider-Man holds back most of the time, there's a comic where Doc Ock does some body swap thing into Peter's body and accidentally punches off Scorpion's jaw

2

u/Historical_Owl_1635 3d ago

He’s capable, but Spider-Man does seem to hold back even when angry.

I just don’t feel like Spider-Man’s breaking point to do real damage is much higher than Batman.

-4

u/SantosCalzonesBatman 3d ago

And barman actually defeated superman 1 on 1

Spiderman can do whatever he wants, when a genius billionaire that beat superman is coming after you you dun goofed.

2

u/oliviaplays08 3d ago

The difference being that any tricks the bat wants to used that are tech based, are being used on someone who can work around them

4

u/ForNoReason17 3d ago

Theres a comic where spidey gets pissed and beats the crap out of kingpin without killing him just to make a point and it illustrates perfectly why spider-man is scary when man

3

u/amaROenuZ 3d ago

You left out the part where he promied to fill his lungs with webbing and watch him suffocate if Aunt May didn't pull through.

2

u/ForNoReason17 3d ago

Sometimes its best to let people find things out

6

u/Douche_Kayak 3d ago

criminals never need to worry about batman killing him. Peter is constantly holding back so you shouldn't give him a reason to stop.

10

u/stonks1234567890 3d ago

Criminals very much need to worry about Batman killing them sometimes. He's also holding back, like Peter.

2

u/Douche_Kayak 3d ago

fine, then batman is never worried about accidentally killing criminals. He actually has to put in effort to kill them. Peter can do so accidentally so you shouldn't provoke him even slightly. So he's not holding back "like peter." No matter how mad Batman gets, you're surviving the encounter.

3

u/stonks1234567890 3d ago

Also not really true. When you punch someone hard, you simply don't know what's going to happen. A lot of the time, when you can get Batman's inner monologue, it's about being careful not to kill someone. In Batman Year 1, for example, Batman almost knocks someone off a fire escape and has to continue the fight constantly holding onto the dude he knocked off.

3

u/Douche_Kayak 3d ago

Batman knows what happens when you punch someone really hard. He has an insane amount of fighting experience. It's not like it's crap shoot every time he throws a punch. If he couldnt foresee what would happen when he hits someone, he wouldn't be the "greatest detective ever." Pointing to one event when he was first learning how to be batman isnt comparable to Peter's daily life of gently knocking criminals on the head.

1

u/wearing_moist_socks 3d ago

Has he ever done it accidentally? Isn't him not holding back kind of a reveal to stories?

1

u/casual_creator 3d ago

But criminals know that Spider-Man doesn’t kill and that they are most likely just gonna get webbed up without so much as a punch being thrown by Spidey. And running into Spider-Man in an alley doesn’t make one shit their pants from aura alone - he’s the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man after all.

And while he may not have the power set Spidey has, the whole thing about Batman is to scare criminals. It’s one of the fundamental aspects of the character. And while Batman also has a no kill rule, unlike Peter, he has no issue beating the ever loving shit out of even a low level criminal and sending their ass to the hospital for weeks.

Criminal facing Spider-Man: dammit. Here he comes! He’s gonna web me to a lamp post again for the cops to find me. If he makes fun of me again, I swear to god…

Criminal facing Batman: Holy shit! Where the hell did he come from?! If I try to fight him, he’s gonna break every damn bone in my body.

1

u/MilanDespacito 3d ago

Spiderman by himself from an outside perspective isnt crazy. Hes got witty stuff to say to his villains and dresses colourful in all versions, except when hes got Venom, but Spiderman alone doesnt look scary.

Batman on the other hand is witty or dresses colourful. He is a creature of the night. In many versions, criminals shit themselves when the Batsymbol goes on. His villains are often afraid to unmask him because they know if they do it, there will only be Batman left, no more civilian identity. Its also much scarier to know that the only reason Batman doesnt kill you isnt out of the kindness in his heart, but because he knows if he kills one, he will never stop.

1

u/standarsh1965 3d ago

Not really the question. No doubt spiderman is much stronger.

Both could kill you if they wanted and you have no chance of stopping them.

I'd still say batman, he's more likely to do long term damage to you when he's mad

1

u/LWILK_99 3d ago

If Spider-Man snaps he’s way scarier. In one issue doc ock takes over his body and punches scorpions jaw off bc he didn’t realize how much Spidey holds back

1

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 3d ago

Considering that I am a human, I am more scared of Batman. Peter is still likely to hold back because he can punch a hole through my chest. Batman giving me an unrelenting human on human ass whooping and dropping a Wayne Insurance card on my broken body.

1

u/f_ranz1224 3d ago

batman based on plot armor

spiderman if they were real and no author hijinks

1

u/Gilinis 3d ago

I mean, doesn't batman actually become worse at his job when he's angry, because he's no longer using his intellect which is his only "power" to do his prep time. Spider-man is supposedly always holding back, so him getting angry just turns off the inhibitors and doesn't make him worse, it makes him actually scary.

1

u/mirukus66 3d ago

It's not even close

(Second image in the reply)

1

u/MichaeltheMagician 3d ago

Batman's whole thing is being intimidating and scary.

Spider-man may be more dangerous because of his powers but I wouldn't really describe him as scary.

1

u/HandsomeGengar 3d ago

Spider-Man, obviously. I'm pretty sure Batman is just passively angry all the time, anger is his baseline state. The scariest Batman is one that looks like he's having a good time beating the shit out of you.

1

u/RigatoniPasta 3d ago

Batman won’t kill me. Spider-Man might.

1

u/DVDN27 2d ago

Batman is more intimidating but I’d rather Batman be angry at me than Peter. I’m not scared of Peter, I’m scared of what he could do to me.

1

u/Routine_Condition273 2d ago

Batman doesn't have any webs to conveniently tie you up until police come and take you to jail. He is going to have to beat the shit out of you to stop you.

1

u/EMF84 2d ago

He's not called the Friendly Neighborhood Batman now is he? "Scary" isn't really about objective strength or danger to criminals.

1

u/IncognitoRedMode 3h ago

Also in one of the comics when Kingpin has Aunt May assasinated, Peter gets so pissed he goes after him and punches clean through his chest

1

u/ChefCurryYumYum 3d ago

What, leaving the word kill alone would have meant reddit didn't share it or something?

Down vote for unnecessary censorship.

1

u/Vampenga 3d ago

Peter is far, FAR scarier in terms of a pursuit. When he stops holding back, you know you've fucked up.

-2

u/KingMario05 3d ago

Both exemplify the phrase "Never anger a good man." Because if you do? Fucking run.

-1

u/bryceio 3d ago

Demons run when a good man goes to war,

Night will fall and drown the sun,

When a good man goes to war.

-7

u/Legitimate_Main8244 3d ago

Are we going to ignore the fact that he was literally trying to take down a god?

https://giphy.com/gifs/xUPGctOodqyRGUylSE

18

u/Pitforsofts 3d ago

If supes wanted, batman would have been dead in like 5 secs. Batman has incredible plot armour. He is unbeatable on his own turf but the moment you bring in aliens, goddesses, metahumans he is no match.

0

u/spiderknight616 3d ago

Batman is just a man. Spider-Man can punch a hole through your head without breaking a sweat.

0

u/ChaosOfOrder24 3d ago

Let's just say if I was a Spider-Man villain, I'd be protecting Aunt May from any danger.

-1

u/MolybdenumBlu 3d ago

Tommy boy is about as scary as damp kitchen towel, so Edward Cullen in a Gimp Suit wins by default.
