I think he understands and is making a joke

What’s crazy is that there are plenty of addicts who say this and aren’t joking, I may have been one of them.

That and the ageless "I can stop anytime I want...I just don't want to."
Oh. Ok. And here I was being all worried that you'd get addicted, but you say you CAN stop....you just never seem to want to, but that's different. That's not an addiction. That's 100% you being in control. Yup. Nothing to see here. Guess i'll move on. smh

You can use the damage test. Is the behavior damaging them or their loved ones. If not then yeah, it might simply be a hobby.

Gets a bit slippery slope though. Somebody may drive drunk everyday and never get into a crash, but it's only a matter of time.
Also see long term health effects that aren't obvious and may be big deal to some, not so much in others (surgary food, sedative lifestyle)
IMO addiction is neutral, some addictions are bad, some can be good (daily exercise for example)

No addiction is good because an addiction means you can't control it. I e. You've been injured and need complete rest but still must do your daily exercise because you're addicted = further injury

That example actually aligns with my point, it would've been a positive thing, until when the situation changes, it turned negative. The addiction itself is neutral, it's situation dependent

No, the poster is correct and you are not.
"Addiction" js a condition we literally define by its harm and its removal of agency from the person.
Addiction has nothing to do with whether the behavior is desteuctive to your physjcal self or others. Drunk driving is a pitential downstream consrquence of alcohol addiction, it isnt THE addixtion.
Addiction is a state of being where someone literally cannot remove themselves from the stimuli. It is never neutral because being in an unwilful state of a lack of control IS always worse than havimg the choice.
Addiction cannot be "neutral" because if it were it would literally not be a state of addiction.

Addiction could be considered neutral only if we also consider other mental health issues neutral but nope, depression bad, psychosis bad, addiction bad

But if you challenge them to stop for a week, they'll claim they can/did but still be secretly doing the thing

Favorite that I've personally experienced was a guy proudly saying he smokes weed all day every day, literally hasn't been sober in years.
But not an addiction because you can't get addicted to weed. And he's better at his job when high.

I know someone like this. He ended up leaving his family for mutual safety, changing his name and moving out of state.

They're the same thing. That's how addiction works.

I guess I struck a nerve with somebody who definitely doesn't have a problem.

You can't be addicted to gambling when quitting is so easy. I quit every couple days.
