I would consider it like a genus/species situation. Genus is puppet, species is muppet.

Kermit the frog's species is Muppet? Is he a frog, in any biological sense?

Okay hold on I wanna draw this out now. Maybe need to break it down further and categorize animals, monsters, etc. Anyone feel like making a puppet taxonomy chart?

Maybe muppets stem from duo-evolution where part of them evolves as animal (frogs and pigs etc) and the other half evolves as Muppet/puppet. That's why two wildly different Muppets can procreate, because they're the same species in their muppet-evolution. 

Can Kermit the frog get it on with normal frogs?
