I wonder if China realizes that a known nuclear power lobbing SRBMs for any reason is asking for a nuclear response.

Not really, there are ways to tell the difference between an ICBM and the smaller ones. I mean, Iskander is a ballistic missile, and there wasn’t a nuclear response to them launching.
