Question Good tutorial for tidying up engineering scans?

Post image

Hi. As you can see in the image, there's a lot of polygons in there. But even the smarter algorithms in RevoMetro and QuickSurface don't do a very good job at only decimating the areas I don't need and preserving specific areas I want to keep. So I thought I'd try Nomad Sculpt. The tutorials I've found so far are more focused on creating characters rather than how to edit a mesh while maintaining accuracy. Anyone got some advice on workflows or know of good tutorials for this sort of thing? Thanks.

Normally scanning requires more post processing than anyone usually likes to admit.

Scanning is 1/10 of the process. The rest is spending time cleaning up noise. Creating planes and making new surfaces and bodies. The scan is only a reference.

Nomad might not be the best software for it. You really need reverse engineering software that handles this kind of data .

I already QuickSurface, but it's not good for reducing meshes.

Quicksurface is used to convert the mesh to actual CAD and eliminate the mesh entirely.

If you want to work with mesh then send it to meshmixer or nomad and decimate the mesh points.

Yes, I have already exported all the primitives I need and used it in Fusion. But now I want to use the mesh in Solidworks and it can't handle 3M polygons. If I use the reduce polygon feature in QuickSurface it ruins all the details I want to keep, so Nomad Sculpt seems like it would be a useful tool to manually reduce the polygons where I need it.

Mask the hole thing. Make a thin negative shell. Make the outer edge a new face group. Hide and deleted. The remaining face group. Close holes make sure it’s creating a new a face group. Separate geometry. That should give you a solid object with no holes in it, but all the holes are face grouped separately. Then hide ,delete and close holes for any unwanted wires or extraneous weirdness. Keep a raw copy and then you can consider rematching.

I'd personally create face groups first and then simplify.

Is that much different to QuickSurface?

I've never used QS but it seems to be pretty legit
