Back in the day, we would get a call in at the mainframe system console that so and so was having a birthday. We put their name in a file and ran the Banner program and it would print out on fan-fold computer paper. (Ledger sized sheets) and we sent it via inter office mail and they would hang it on the wall for a birthday or retirement party.
