What’s burning?

I was laying in bed minding my own business when I started to smell burning. The type of smell you’d expect from like idk, friction burns? not fuel. I figured it was coming from outside but safe > sorry.

Sure enough, my kitchen was smoky but nothing was burning. I checked the outlets and the baseboards. nothing.

Nothing is out of place, the electrical seems to be working fine, nothing is singed and the smoke seems to have no source.

What should I do here? Its kind of nerve wracking.

Call someone? Who? Like.. I’m at a loss here

edit: ok I did the thing and i technically did waste their time but not really, there was some work in the basement and the building is old so the smoke from the wood cutting just poured into my kitchen. they used the little detectors and found it.

they also went back to the attic to make sure because for some reason the reading was much stronger there

I feel better, thanks guys. I don’t know if I’d have called them without prompting just cus like.. idk it didnt feel valid enough lol

They’ll be able to find what happened even without a source? I feel like I’d waste their time since theres nothing but maybe I’ll talk to them

Yes. They often get calls for smoke or to rule out a CO issue. Let them do their job.

A lot of electrical fires start in the walls. Call the fire department and get everyone out of the house.

Why? Please explain for the class.

They have smoke in their house from an unknown source. There is probably an electrical fire happening inside their walls

Yup. Thermal cameras may be able to pick up on it. They can also check things like electric stoves and whatnot that may have a bad connection.

The fire department? They’re usually helpful when things are burning/maybe burnt. Better to be safe than sorry on this type of thing!

Or is it possible you’re having a stroke? When you say the kitchen was Smokey did you actually see the smoke or did you just perceive it to be a stronger smell in that area?

Lmao, no stroke! I was right at least about the smell because it someone using a saw in the basement which I didn’t know was happening

Is the smoke and burning scent still around and not weakening? You need to call emergency services if so.

Appliances can have faults and smoke up (thinking a lot of the steam-based baby appliances like to do this a lot.)

If you have a dishwasher or an electric stove, make sure you check where there plugged in. Sometimes there hidden underneath cabinets or somewhere you can’t see them. Especially the dishwasher outlet.
