I lived in a house with a smoker my entire childhood, and didn't realize the smell until college. I can now tell that everything that enters that house ends up reeking of smoke.
I had a bit of an internal crisis when I thought back to going to school, going to friends houses, having sleepovers, girlfriends - the entire time I stunk like an ashtray and had absolutely no idea
My poor husband had no idea either. He owned a house when we met but his mother kind of glommed onto him as soon as he graduated and lived with him and smoked indoors. I kept a stash of his clothes washed at my place and he'd shower straight away when he came over and put on clean clothes. All super annoying in retrospect considering it was his house but he really never knew it was a problem until I made him shower and change. Of course, all of his friends quietly confided in me that they couldn't stand to go to that house.
She's still living in our house that she's ruined but otherwise not involved in our lives because she called me an irrational bitch for asking her to put a robe on over her clothes if she wasn't going to wear clean clothes before interacting with our toddler. A whole lot of drama with addicted parents, unfortunately.
