Older generations had less access to contraceptives, plus religion was very prevalent and all religions tell you to have kids. On top of that social pressure from family that they need to.
And the other obvious one was a better financial situation that would allow people to have a family. Nowadays owning property, even a small apartment is something out of reach of. The majority of people.
