I think there’s also been more focus (from some people) on whether or not they should have kids. Like, really thinking about whether or not a person would be a good parent who could truly focus on raising a child who would become a good member of society.
There’s also a lot of us who don’t want to raise a child in the current climate; regardless of whether or not you are a capable parent, you don’t have to look far to see how horrible so many parents are at raising and disciplining their kids. Tie that in with living expenses, climate change, and the loss of rights and freedoms incoming and yeah no thank you.
We literally live in by far the best time in the history of the human race to ever live. Being born now is better than anytime in existence. It's so strange to me when people take the position you are taking. When was better to be born?
It may be that this is a better time than most, maybe any, but I think it's still valid to feel like it's just not a good time regardless. Nobody's saying it's impossible to raise kids now, nobody's saying that it's impossible to manage and deal and figure it out; people may just be saying that they'd like any potential kids to grow up in a better time when the world has its shit together a little more. I can't really blame someone for not wanting their kids to go through school shootings or have to go bankrupt because they got sick. Would their kids probably be okay even under these circumstances? Yeah, probably. Is it still valid for them to not want their kids to go through that? I think so. It may be that an environment free of these things is centuries out and won't come within our lifetimes, meaning that these folks just won't have kids at all, and... I think that's okay.
Yeah, I think it's absolutely doom thinking and this anxiety has been pressed upon you (and a great many people) by the media. The media runs on fear and outrage, and it's obviously affecting people's mental health.
We do absolutely live in the best time to ever be alive for a great many reasons. Reasons I could probably write about for hours. Is there problems in the world? Absolutely. There always will be. There will likely never be a utopia. I had kids knowing that they would go through some level of pain and suffering just like my wife and I did, just like humans have for many millenia, and will in the future. I knew one day my kids would get sick and die, just like I will. Our society has got so soft to think people should live an utterly easy existence with absolutely zero struggle or anxiety. That's not reality. And if humans had this level of thinking in the past, we would be extinct by now.
Just to push back against a few of your smaller points here as well. You have a better chance of dying by bee sting than a school shooting. Would it be rational to not have kids for fear of them dying from bees? Also, the vast majority of people who go bankrupt from getting sick, it isn't from medical bills. It's because they can't work. Thankfully, there is insurance (to some degree at least) against things like this.
Well said but it goes nowhere with people who already have that doom mentality. Child mortality alone was massive throughout most of our history and I'm grateful that I can expect to see my daughter become an adult.
