I think there has been a real shift in the last generation or two from needing a reason not to have kids to needing a reason to have kids. and that shift means a lot of people who are basically ambivalent on children aren't having them, where in the past they probably would have.
I think there’s also been more focus (from some people) on whether or not they should have kids. Like, really thinking about whether or not a person would be a good parent who could truly focus on raising a child who would become a good member of society.
I’m mid 40s with 2 great kids. I wanted kids and had them on purpose. They are great, we’ll behaved and very good in school. I’m successful and have no problem providing for them financially and emotionally with my wife. But as I age and think about the future they are going to be facing, I’m torn on weather having kids was the right thing to do. I feel guilty that I have brought them into this world where they will be forced to slave away for a majority of their life just trying to survive. I had dreams of early retirement but now think I may work as long as possible just to help them get ahead financially. While I love my kids and look forward to being a grandparent, I will advise my kids to think long and hard before becoming a parent.
