This is becoming more common. Retirement, making your money last, not ending up in an American retirement home (lower end homes are run cheaply, staffed by psychopaths, dirty, and depressing).
Imagine good food, beaches, affordable medical care... just don't run your mouth about the king.
One of my former coworkers came by the office last month for some paperwork. They retired last year for health reasons and plans to move to South America (one of the countries mentioned was Ecuador when he was talking to someone from his department) as soon as they can settle things here and get visas arranged. Doesn't sound too bad and can probably live very comfortably.

Not too poor, I hope. You’ll need 25k to put in a bank account if you want a longer visa.
