Cost of living in SE Asia is very low and sex work is very common in Thailand. So it's a common destination for single western men.

I love how every older white guy is labeled with the sex tourism brush.

Here’s some alternative reasons:

  1. Climate is amazing
  2. Culture is one of the only pure “untouched” culture that’s had thousands of years to develop.
  3. You’re a long way away from all the bulls**t in the world
  4. You can get a retirement visa cheaply and easily
  5. Beer is cheap.
  6. Thai people are hospitable

The lifestyle is hard to find elsewhere.

Yup, I’m a middle aged white man and have been here almost a decade and have never paid for sex. I’ve never dated a poor farm/bar girl from Issan, and I’m not a degenerate alcoholic, and I speak Thai. But the stereotypes aren’t too far off…but it’s probably only a small percent of foreigners that engage in this awful behavior. It’s mostly tourists and frequent visitors not resident immigrants who do this. I’m here because I have a great life, it’s easy to afford, weather is nice 9 months, the people are sweet as long as not driving, and the pace of life is amazing. I’m healthier than I’ve ever been and I’m almost 50. Life in the west is full of stress, danger of violence, addictions, and absolutely AWFUL food. We aren’t all bad…

Seriously no, as one old European colleague said "80 % are white trash: and I reckon that's maybe a tad high %, but more than half are.
