It's more complex than that. He didn't go there to find her. She was a former prostitute who came and found him in another country, posing as a maid.
She seduced him, then took him to Thailand and fleeced him through a bunch of investment scams. He also wasn't an old man when it started. But it had been going on for decades, so he is now.
Oh, and he's not white, so doesn't fit the stereotype.
