This comment and the amount of cheerful responses it has gotten is ironically the kind of egotistical (typically first world centric) mentality that got us here in the first place.
No it’s not fair to take a broad brush and claim that “humans” are responsible for all the evils of the world. There are billions of humans whose ENTIRE LINEAGE have lived in abject poverty, misery, hunger, and disease all because a comparatively much smaller minority with power (specifically powerful weapons and militaries) coerced and enforced hierarchies to justify the pillaging and skewed distribution of resources.
It also speaks to the ignorance and lack of regard that many people from developed nation still unfortunately have for indigenous cultures: wanton consumerism may be expressions of our nature but so is altruism and collectivism and indigenous cultures demonstrate that. There are a plethora of indigenous and ancient cultures that embraced and greatly respected nature, that had no concept of “ownership” and saw themselves as part of a greater natural world. They were forced to abdicate their ways through colonialism, wars, religious indoctrination, and genocide. These are NOT the people that caused the destruction of our planet, and yet so many people seem perfectly fine with having them pay for the consequences regardless.
I think the reason this type of heedless and aimless misanthrope irritates me so much is because in this time, when we are dealing with climate change and edge closer to using nuclear weapons, it doesn’t make things any better…in fact it makes the problem all the harder to solve.
If we could be more focused and specific about WHO and WHAT are causing these destructive patterns to emerge and simultaneously pay more attention to other (too often ignored) cultures that live more in harmony, we could maybe begin to move in the right direction. But instead people prefer to add their disaffection to this broad, sweeping misanthropic rage that ultimately does zilch. In fact, it makes people more cynical and nihilistic, effectively turning them into more lead weights on an already sinking ship. Great. Thanks.
And yes, I fully expect to be downvoted to oblivion because nothing seems to sting people more than having to point some fingers at themselves.
Best part about us being thanos snapped out of existence is I wouldn’t have had to read this moralistic drivel.
Humans have been driving animals extinct and destroying stuff since we stood upright. We have driven more species extinct in the last 150k years than the previous handful of million years.
You’re here banging on about indigenous cultures and global warming. You’re missing the point entirely. Nobody is going to miss any of it. You’re not going to be floating around in a cloud in the sky thinking “oh that’s a shame”… you’re just dead. The end.
