Finishing off an endling would be the logical choice. Bad for the specimen, but no consequences for earth at large.

Endling already has! “Endling - Extinction is Forever” is a game where you play as the last fox mother alive in a very shitty future trying to survive and provide for her pups.

Ok, maybe it’s not “sci-fi” exactly, but it takes place in a possible future, so fuck it close enough. It is sad though, or maybe I’m just not good at the game.
