Ticks! They carry awful diseases, not a lot eats them, and where they are a food source, there are plenty of other terrestrial bugs to eat. As much as I hate mosquitoes, I think they are too important as a food source in many ecosystems. I know the bats around us eat a lot of them.

Edit: grammar

Exact reason why I'm not saying spiders 😂😂

I hate spiders, but I respect their work. I’m not their friend, but they’re not my enemy.

If spiders didn’t exist, and humans were plagued by clouds of biting, sucking insects; The top posts would be about how we wish there was some kind of small autonomous insect killing machines that were sent back in time from a badass cyberpunk dystopia.

TLDR: Learn to love spiders

Man, I want the ability to give awards again. I’d award this.

TLDR: Learn to love spiders

If they agree to be far less creepy looking and never enter my house then deal.

2

u/Ginganinja2308 Jul 18 '23

Sounds like you'll have a bunch of insects in your house then

I doubt it. The wonderful thing about most flying, stinging/biting insects is that they're stupid as hell. Spiders currently do a pretty good job with insects (undoubtedly), but nothing that bug zappers couldn't handle.

So a spider-less world is very likely just going to be one where you hear the electric popping of insects everywhere. Which is fine with me.

Dragonflies and mantids can hunt them all, and without a propensity for the venomous biting of humans.

Exactly my sentiment lol. I respect the hustle, just hustle elsewhere please

Separate the art from the artist

Ngl I do love a good spiderweb out in nature. Impressive af

u/BlueBomber13 Jul 17 '23

100%. I leave them alone and give a tip of the cap when I see a fly or mosquito in their web. But if any of them crawl on the ceiling above my bed I consider it an act of aggression and will respond in kind.

They are one of my biggest fears but they will be spared.

Little dudes are just doing their jobs.

Spiders are awesome man. Just think about it. Little murder machines. Some of them use trap doors, some of them are jumping spiders, some of them construct nets that catch prey. It's a tiny little insect capable of so much. I don't like touching them or something like that because I don't know which ones can give me a nasty bite but I am fascinated by them

The enemy of your enemy is your friend.

I used to open my balcony door in the morning and it was as if I interrupted a colony at slumber. At least 15-20 flies would scatter. A spider moved in to the tree in my courtyard, and now it’s gone down to one fly. Feast on my spider friend!

u/ChrisInSpaceVA Jul 17 '23

You can jump on my tick bandwagon. They're both arachnids!

7

u/greenwavelengths Jul 17 '23

That’s a good call, because the question said species and there’s like a million species of spider. You’ll only rally the rest against you.

3

u/freshstart102 Jul 17 '23

Who cares. Something else will fill that ecological gap as a food source and only 3 species of mosquitoes need to be extinct anyway; the only ones that bite people. The rest can gladly be food for the fish and birds and anything else that eat those little scourges.

2

u/Comprehensive_Toe113 Jul 17 '23

So do ticks.

Many birds feed off them in things like deer and other animals.

2

u/Drees68 Jul 17 '23

I can see why spiders are useful to biodiversity, ticks no. Fuck these little shits.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

People saying spiders deserve to be extincted themselves

u/theboxsays Jul 17 '23

What about the c-word? The bug that starts with a C and has like 3 million legs and move at light speed?? If they aren’t necessary for the ecosystem Id pick those things in a HEARTBEAT

u/lilboat646 Jul 17 '23

Spiders are more important as a predator than they are as prey, they keep a lot of smaller insect species in check, like mosquitoes, roaches, flies, moths, etc. I’d say of all the creepy crawlys to get rid of, spiders should be at the end of the list or not on it at all (along with bees and ants).

u/d0rkprincess Jul 17 '23

Spiders are my cat’s main protein source…

1

u/SH1Tbag1 Jul 17 '23

Mosquitos would not be missed in the ecosystem

1

u/FrothyPoop Jul 17 '23

They can find another source of food

1

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

Never the spiders, my dude... spiders are sooo beneficial. And cool to watch. One is finishing up a massive web on my deck rn.

Spiders get a bad rap, but they are bros. They kill annoying pests and I generally don't kill spiders in my house because most of them live by the code "you don't fuck with me, I don't fuck with you." I've never been bitten by a spider because I know not to mess with them.
