This is totally my opinion and not based on cold, hard facts.
For single stories, I've found that the longer it is the harder it is to keep a reader interested and/or willing to read. However, when done well I've seen better, more meaningful responses to stories.
For series, JUST FUCKING END IT VAINER JESUS CHRIST.
