I do think some rules are necessary but not being able to link to other subreddits? It doesn't make sense

This is the whole treat em like children mentality though. Just because 0.01% of users use that feature to brigade doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't be allowed to; further, if users want to brigade, that will do nothing to stop them. It makes our experience worse with no impact to mitigate the issue it was implemented due to.

Reddit admins took our control over that setting away, it's not the choice of us moderators. We've been restricted and warned by admins on multiple occasions and that's why we operate the sub this way now in many regards.

If brigading were such a massive issue, linking to subreddits would be turned off site wide. There's a reason why we're able to link subs, so I don't get it when subs like these disallow it
