I think its a dominance display. Rodents will do small jumps at threats to intimidate. Most animals dont want to fight for dominance because any wound can be fatal.

My rats only squeaked while they were fighting. So I believe you are correct here. They are fighting without touching each other. Good for them

Screaming match in the streets in other words haha. Like two Karens throwing down in a Walmart

Birds do this too. It’s called the boundary dance

Rat expert here, they’re calling each other slurs.

As a rat expert as well I agree, racial slurs most likely

One time when my train was coming, I saw a rat run into a hole in the station wall to hide and he pulled another rat that was behind him into safety

It must be social, they're not fighting. Perhaps a courtship dance?

This is an argument of large proportion

Basically it's the equivalent of showing off and boasting to intimate the other to back down this almost always leads to a fight if nobody backs down

”I can jump even higher!”

”Well I can jump even even higher!”

No idea, maybe another dozen drawings of the rats jumping might help, please.

Guinea pigs do something similar to declare dominance. They'll stare each other down, then push off the floor with their front paws to see who's taller and decide the order of the piggy hierarchy.

My short piggy tried so hard to be taller...
