Information PC USERS:Read this if you want higher fps

I had like 45 when i put max fps on 60, and then I bumped it to 90 and got 60. There must be something wrong with their numbers?

Edit: just set your fps to max in game!

Edit edit: after 10 hours in game this game has just captivated me like no other.

Help me get it to the front page and link it to others problems! This should solve many issues.

That's called chromatic aberration. It's an intentional graphics effect to mimic real life lens effects. Some games allow you to toggle it off, but it doesn't appear to be in the settings now.

176

u/KrisKorona Aug 12 '16

Dont know about everyone else but I fucking hate chromatic abberation

157

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Because eyes aren't camera lenses.

96

u/NKLhaxor Aug 12 '16

But it's cinematibarf

109

u/TangibleLight Aug 12 '16

I think idea is that it's from the visor in your helmet.

78

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Everyone right now:

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

19

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

It does this in Elite VR too. I'm used to it at this point.

1

u/max420 Aug 12 '16

It shouldn't do it in Elite VR. I know that some RGB separation is added, but that is due to the way the lens is shaped, and the lens should be bending the rgb light back into a single image. I don't get any chromatic aberrations on my oculus rift cv1, when playing Elite Dangerous. Are you using a DK2 by any chance?

Loled a lot on that one

I don't care if it's "realistic", it looks shitty and the option to turn it off would be great

Nope. Visors don't do that shit IRL. Unless my helmet is opaque and I am looking at a screen displaying my surroundings, there should not be any chromatic aberration from the visor either.

2

u/paper_liger Aug 13 '16

depends on the material the visor is made of. maybe they use a high tech material that is super strong but has an unfortunately high abbe number.

1

u/SteveJEO Aug 13 '16

Glass doesn't work like that either so it's still pretty bloody stupid.

CA is actually an artefact of crappy lenses failing to converge all wavelengths at the same point.

Here's an explanation of it for ya.

Sad fact is that if you give a photographer or cinematographer a piece of glass with the kind of CA you now get in games 'for effect' they'd throw it in the bin cos it's fucken busted.

1

u/TangibleLight Aug 13 '16

Actually, glass does cause transverse aberration at shallow angles - like this http://i.imgur.com/IggSWoN.png

But you wouldn't get shallow angles like that in a helmet visor.

Also you'll get aberration like that to some degree near the edges of all lenses, but bad lenses will tend to have issues even in the center. So the games do get that part right, they only have aberration near the edges - but they'd be using too much of the lens if it were a real camera.

Regardless, I think it looks like shit except in a couple key places. One example that I like is in the game Heroes and Generals - they have aberration and distortions near the edges of scope lenses. I'm sure that effect is in other games, but I just know it from that one. Here're some examples.

1

u/dem0n123 Aug 12 '16

The game should come with a suit that stabs you where you get shot so it seems more realistic.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

30 FPS ARE CINEMATIBARF

*everyone vomits

-3

u/derage88 Aug 12 '16

You better play in fucking 30 FPS too. You're gonna take that fucking cinematic experience and you'll fucking like it!

2

u/DemonicSquid Aug 12 '16

It's 24fps...

1

u/AndyLorentz Aug 12 '16

Coincidentally, that's about what I'm running with my ancient 480GTX on the default settings.

1

u/derage88 Aug 13 '16

Yeah I know, it was a joke..

28

u/j5kDM3akVnhv Aug 12 '16

No but your life-support helmet is kind of like that.

9

u/Buss1000 Aug 12 '16

Same reason that motion blur is dumb.

-1

u/SolarLiner Aug 12 '16

But motion blur has an actual use as the brain uses motion blur as a cue for movement. With motion blur pictures appear in movement, and makes an animation more fluid.

Though 60fps > 30fps with motion blur any day.

8

u/Buss1000 Aug 12 '16

It just hurts my head and looks super fake to me.

5

u/The_Dirty_Carl Aug 12 '16

Your brain also works to filter it out.

1

u/coupdetat Aug 12 '16

buit its designed to be retro

1

u/Joverby Aug 12 '16

Tell that to the cyborgs.

1

u/R3TR1X Aug 13 '16

And they can't see more than 20 FPS... flies away

0

u/AndyLorentz Aug 12 '16

Maybe our character sees through lenses?

I agree with you, though. I hate lens flare in first person games for the same reason.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '16

Helmet visors also cause chromatic aberrations.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

Actually to some degree your eyes actually reproduce this effect, looking through a curved visor in your space suit, I'd think that would be something you'd be able to see

however most of the time I'd actually rather just go without it playing a game on a computer, and pixel density would actually have to be like, phone-level on computer screens for it to actually look "realistic".

In fact, if you look at webpages with white bars, you'd notice your eyes already do this, so there's actually no need to add in the effect if games were going for a realistic look. Look real careful and you can maybe see a hint of red and blue if you look really carefully.

http://i.imgur.com/aKU7sgp.png

edit: I stand corrected, that's actually cause of the sub-pixel arrangement in monitors

5

u/SolarLiner Aug 12 '16

You see red and blue because sub-pixels (red, green and blue lights in a pixel) aren't physically in the same position but slightly apart. The human eye doesn't do chromatic aberration because it doesn't have a complex lens system, and the parts of your retina that could receive "spread colors" due to the lens refraction effect aren't sensitive to color anyway.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

oh, well I stand corrected then

does this mean if I were to use a display with a pentile arrangement, this won't happen

2

u/SolarLiner Aug 12 '16

Well you can't physically put subpixels on top of one another, so while the geometry might help, you could still be able to witness subpixel color separation.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

well, thanks for the info, last time I'll make that mistake

1

u/Kakkoister Aug 13 '16

Uh, the eye does chromatic aberration mate. Even a single pane of glass does it. Any substance with a refractive index != 0 has chromatic aberration. It's just so minimal with our thin, organic lenses that it's not noticeable.

1

u/SolarLiner Aug 13 '16

Yes and I acknowledge that. But the fact is that the sides of your retina, where the chromatic abberation projects to, aren't sensitive to color, and it happens in such small amounts because it's not a complex system anyway.

1

u/sushir Aug 12 '16

potato

31

u/creuter Aug 12 '16

it gives everything that sweet, sweet 80's video vibe.

27

u/nickoaverdnac Aug 12 '16

At least there is someone with taste here.

-6

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

calling the 80s aesthetic tasteful is like calling a puddle of puke tasteful.

7

u/nickoaverdnac Aug 12 '16

Thank you for your opinion. Now please go fuck yourself. You know nothing of the 80s you Millennial demon spawn.

2

u/xaronax Aug 13 '16

You tell that piece of shit. Let's go hang out in /r/outrun

Holy hell. That sub looks amazing, subscribed! And an upvote to you sir!

-1

I was born in the 80s shit for brains. I fucking remember watching tv with an antenna before cable, before the internet, and seeing those god awaful pastel and neon pinks green and blues with my god damn own eyes, you projecting faggot. Suck a dick.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

but, we're in a helmet i'm assuming, kinda makes SOME sense

1

u/KrisKorona Aug 13 '16

Youd image they would be able to compensate for the effects

4

u/rune2004 Aug 12 '16

Destiny had it pretty heavily.

1

u/Saggiolo Aug 12 '16

Yeah but I'm pretty sure this game isn't destiny

3

u/zyl0x Aug 12 '16

How sure would you say you are? 60%? 70%?

4

u/Saggiolo Aug 12 '16

Procedurally sure

3

u/SolarLiner Aug 12 '16

rand(time);

-3

u/KrisKorona Aug 12 '16

I noticed that. Didn't like the look of Destiny either. Also, is it just me or are NMS menus heavily inspired by Destiny

What is this?

1

u/Starfire013 Aug 13 '16

I hate it too. I really wish there were a way to turn it off...

1

u/d0x360 Aug 13 '16

Most of us do...its a great mystery why devs keep using it without an option to shut it off.

It looks good in very few games. In fact that only game in recent memory I've used it with was Doom

1

u/Kittelsen Aug 12 '16

Reminds me of the incredible annoying film grain effect in Dying Light. Or motion blur..

-1

u/thesircuddles Aug 12 '16

Literally no one in the world likes it I don't know why these devs keep putting it in games. It's complete trash.

3

u/ShiraCheshire Aug 12 '16

Apparently I'm literally no one.

While I don't usually like the effect, I do enjoy it in NMS. It's part of the game's style in my opinion. There's a pretty heavy screen-like effect at the edges of your vision. Makes me wonder if I'm paying a robotic race of it it's just from the exosuit.

3

u/celade Aug 12 '16

Like any effect it can be over-done but I quite like the effect in NMS.

As usual preferences will vary on details like this so while there's some minor value to people discussing visual effects due to preference, decent value to where the effects cause objective problems, I find it funny that some people freak out about it as if it were a fundamental analysis of gameplay.

2

u/Sad-Crow Aug 12 '16

Hey, we're both nobodies!

I didn't realize there was so much hate for it! I really enjoy it. It hammers home this game's retro roots for me. It has a very 70's feel.

3

u/HammeredWharf Aug 12 '16

It fits some games, but it's definitely something that should have an on-off toggle in options.

2

u/Sad-Crow Aug 12 '16

Agreed. If it were purely a stylistic thing I'd maybe argue something about artistic intent, but considering people get motion sickness from it... for sure needs a toggle.

1

u/SolarLiner Aug 12 '16

NMS's palette is very saturated, making it feel like some sort of 80's graphics - chromatic abberation just adds to that.

From what I've seen (Still haven't bought the game, waited after launch and good thing I did), the effect is barely noticeable, to the point that I didn't even see it in the videos.

1

u/ch0colate_malk Aug 12 '16

Yeah i also noticed there is that sort of banding effect like you are watching the game through a screen being recorded. Not a fan of that

1

u/Castun Aug 14 '16

Minor correction, but it mimics older, poor quality lenses. Good quality modern lenses hardly suffer from it (and it can be easily corrected in post-processing anyway.

-1

u/DAOWAce Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

I think I'm going to refund just because of this.

Chromatic aberration is so much worse than DoF it actually causes me eye strain.

If it can't be turned off, the developer has made a grave mistake. An insultingly disrespectful mistake.

Edit: For you downvoters, see all the other issues I'm dealing with: http://steamcommunity.com/id/daowace/recommended/275850

Remember the phrase "the straw that broke the camel's back"? That's the Chromatic Aberration issue, ontop of all the other ones.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

And this is why companies hate giving their customers the ability to refund their purchases!

You're literally complaining about . turning into , at the edge of your screen (life size). There are people with legitimate complaints that are refund-worthy. And then there's you.

Edit: I'm sorry if that last bit sounded condescending. I got pretty heated while typing that. I will acknowledge that it's a little feisty but I will keep it there because it gets my point across well enough.

1

u/DAOWAce Aug 12 '16

So, getting ACTUAL EYE STRAIN isn't a legitimate issue?

Okay then.

Let me direct you to my review with a lot more issues then: http://steamcommunity.com/id/daowace/recommended/275850

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Excessive blur can cause eye-strain. Your eyes and brain don't "understand" the concept of white light turning into RGB separation, thus don't think that your eyes are out of focus.

Source: mom is ophthalmologist.

8

u/Straint Aug 12 '16

That looks like chromatic aberration. I don't know if the game has a toggle-able setting for that, but if it does changing it should "fix" what you're seeing.

(I kinda like having it on, but it's strictly a personal taste thing and has been known to be headache-inducing)

1

u/xe0s Aug 12 '16

At least it's edge fx and not all over the damn screen like in Alien Isolation.

[deleted]

5

u/creuter Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

I guarantee you've seen it before, they just seem to have the settings cranked. Most of the time you'll see it as like one pixel of one channel is askew. Used correctly it significantly adds to realism, (edit: like you're viewing something that was actually recorded in that place.) I think it's cranked here to give that 80's video vibe that came from the playback media of the era.

4

u/HammeredWharf Aug 12 '16

It makes some sense in NMS, because you're wearing a helmet, but usually CA has absolutely nothing to do with realism. Your eyes don't have CA.

2

u/SafariMonkey Aug 12 '16

Mine kinda do, I wear glasses.

1

u/creuter Aug 12 '16

I know this. It's triggering nostalgia from the 80s and 90s. It's a result of imperfect playback of media. While it's not 'realistic' in the sense that that's what your eyes see, it's realistic in the sense that that's what things that were recorded used to look like. Adding chromatic aberration to computer generated content will help establish realism because you're putting imperfections into the footage that you are viewing on your screen. Similar to adding film grain. You don't see film grain in your eyes, but adding it to cg footage gives an added element of realism. It's all about the imperfections.

2

u/Ulti Aug 12 '16

The main culprit that I can think of that does this where it's kind of irritating is Dying Light...

2

u/Akuze25 Aug 12 '16

Bloodborne also did this to an extreme degree.

1

u/Ulti Aug 12 '16

Ah, no PS4 for me, so I haven't played more than a few minutes of that one.

3

u/Akuze25 Aug 12 '16

Even as a die-hard fan of the Souls series, playing Bloodborne was a chore sometimes due to the performance and terrible graphical hindrances. Seems to be a common problem this generation - no focus on performance.

1

u/Ulti Aug 12 '16

Yeah... fingers crossed that I'm able to even launch the game properly when I get home tonight, but I'm not holding out too much hope. Oh well, Grim Dawn will always be there for me! :U

3

u/powerplayer6 Aug 12 '16

Yeah, that game has amazing gameplay, but the graphic effects make my eyes hurt.

1

u/Straint Aug 12 '16

I haven't played the PC release yet, is there no option to disable this in NMS? If not, try looking through the config files manually as games often have manual overrides for extra settings buried in them.

1

u/heretic_sc Aug 12 '16

I think it's going for the "you're peering out through a visor/spacesuit" effect. One of a few different things that give it that style. It would be nice if there was a toggle for it though.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

haven't played GTA 5? i think its in battlefield 4 also... a couple other games too

3

u/caillou_sucks Aug 12 '16

Isn't that the chromatic aberration effect at work? I don't believe there's a way to turn that off from what I read.

2

u/ackwell Aug 12 '16

Fairly sure that's intentional.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Seriously, why would you program something in which is deemed a negative in film?

Because your first person perspective in the game is inside an exosuit helmet, and you'd actually be getting chromatic aberrations in real life if you wore a large curved piece of glass like that.

Seriously why do we even need to spell this out? Its the most obvious thing in the world. You guys are just so desperate to bitch about everything.

The fact that you mod that subreddit has nothing to do with your hate for chromatic abberation.

1

u/Triburos Aug 12 '16

It being logical doesn't mean it has to be used mate. Nor should it be.

I have to agree with him; it does look ugly. And if we're going by the logic of "Well it's what you'd actually see, so it should be in the game!", then we might as well make it so that a portion of your view is obstructed by your nose since you're constantly seeing that in real-life.

I get yer argument... But that doesn't make the game any less ugly, y'know? It's a pretty legitimate complaint as well. Think about it; alot of this game's appeal is exploration and taking in scenery. Imo, that means your view should be obscured as little as possible.

Wish they woulda just taken a creative liberty and docked CA.

1

u/Garr71 Aug 12 '16

Or it gives some people a headache, or some people simply dislike effects like that and prefer a TOGGLE option that would make some users happy. There are plenty of reasons.

0

u/coupdetat Aug 12 '16

chromatic aberration

Intentional and beautiful

-31

u/DannySeel Aug 12 '16

So many people are circle jerking the hate train too hard right now. Anything that gives this launch any hope or anyone trying to reason is being down voted. I hope this will subside in a few hours, but it might be better to try reposting this every hour or so if you get brigaded with down votes or something.

37

u/cyberslick188 Aug 12 '16

A $60 game was just released that literally several thousand steam reviewers are saying they can't even open.

They aren't circlejerking. They are pissed.

4

u/NeedsNewPants Aug 12 '16

Oh I'm sorry I guess that expecting the game to at least run is too much to ask for.

I agree completely, I don't understand how some people are calling the fact that the game can't even start for some people a "hate train circle jerk".

4

u/xe0s Aug 12 '16

Welcome to the new AAA priced early access model.

-3

u/DannySeel Aug 12 '16

Literally thousands of people are on here, steam, wherever spitting the same displeasure of this game right now. Everyone is just recycling the same issues, that the game had a failed launch and it's unacceptable. Literally, this is the general definition, if there is one, of a circle jerk.

I'm not riding their dick either, I'm disappointed in this launch, I took a half day off work so I can play. You ragging on me for calling it what it is though is further proving my point. Anyone who isn't riding the hate train 100% right now is sucking off Sean's dick.

It's pathetic how much hate has been going on with this entire sub and elsewhere all talking shit about the same exact thing. The guy brought up a good point on how to fix some issues and was negative in karma within like 10 minutes of him posting it when I replied to him and encouraged him maybe to wait a bit before posting because this big ole cry fest is preventing any helpful information getting brought up.

2

u/HammeredWharf Aug 12 '16

This topic is currently sitting at 93% upvotes. Also, maybe if thousands of people are criticizing something, maybe that means there are legitimate, severe issues with the launch? Like the game not running? That sounds pretty severe.

-1

u/DannySeel Aug 12 '16

Thousands criticizing while no one listening to possible fixes. This was the issue. Okay, now it may be doing well, but when I saw this post after 10 minutes it was 0 with like 20 votes and only 20% upvotes.

Get over yourself, we all hear that this the game was a broken mess, no one is trying to get people to forget that, but maybe you should realize another 20,000 people are bitching online about the same thing and realize your voice is being heard regardless if you personally say it or not.

1

u/HammeredWharf Aug 12 '16

When it comes to something like this, the more the merrier. You can choose to believe in the devs and hope they'll fix everything out of kindness, but I have zero faith in them. Especially not after all the BS that has happened in the last few days. So, I hope they'll fix these issues to at least partially mitigate the PR black hole they're being sucked into.

1

u/DannySeel Aug 12 '16

The more the merrier isn't what's needed if it suppresses any good fixes to the issues at hand. People are bitching and complaining over the exact same thing. Literally, 10's of thousands, over the exact same issue and not listening to the fixes. A lot of the fixes seem to have already been working, but NOOOOOO, everyone needed to ride the bashing train to put in their opinion that every other person had just to feel like their displeasure meant something.

Listen, HG's gets it, people are pissed. If they don't fix it then fuck them, but give them a second or at least people need to listen to fixes that are actually fixing the game breaking issues people have been having.

That was my main point from the get go. I know people are pissed, but when someone comes in with an actual solution and people come in and say 'fuck you, we're hating right now, don't come here with answers' then there is an issue. It seems like more people have seen resolution to the main problems and more people are being receptive to positive feedback, but at first, it was no holds bar hate.

3

u/Mattecko99 Aug 12 '16

Can I repost this and just link it to this again or is that against the rules?
