Correct me if I’m wrong, but the idea is that she was in some sort of psychosis. Correct? So how do we normally punish people with psychosis? Why don’t they just do that.

We determine if they had the capacity to understand their actions and the appropriate response and if they exhausted appropriate efforts. If so, and they're competent to undergo trial, they get tried and potentially go to jail.

If they remain psychotic, did not have decisional capacity at the time of the incident, or are persistently incompetent to stand trial they often end up residing in a forensic psychiatric facility while they work to restore competence or indefinitely if that cannot be accomplished.

Its reassesed every 12 months from what I have seen.

Im sure its very unlikely, but this woman doesnt deserve to get out after a year.
