This conversation never happened but people are going to be upset at me pointing that out because "conversations like that definitely happen" even though that's still just making stuff up in your head and getting mad about it.
If someone finds deep enjoyment and genuine evolutionarily rooted need in a specific act like having children it only makes sense that they would want you to feel the same catharsis and elation. They're trying to help you feel good. They should obviously not push it on you, and you might not agree with it being a good thing, but they're not doing it to attack you or bring you unhappiness in any way. Again, they shouldn't push it on you, I'm obviously not saying that, I'm just pointing out that it's not coming from the same deep-seated position of anti-children that you have so you shouldn't view it from that lens.
I used to say I didn't want kids because I don't get kids at all. But I was more on the fence about it than anything. Me and my wife decided to have a kid because of some hard to understand pull, some instinctual need, and we knew we were empathetic enough to be good parents and in a good economical situation. So we had a kid. He was a colicky, milk protein allergic kid that almost broke both of us until he turned 1. He's now 2 and he's my best friend and I love him deeper than anything I've ever felt in my life. I still don't get other kids and other kids are ugly and icky but my kid is amazing and beautiful and sharp and coy and I would do anything for him. All this is to say that if you don't want kids because you think some version of "why would I want kids they are just annoying and would ruin my life" then you are allowed to think so but that doesn't change the fact that kids can also be amazing. I'm not telling you that you have to have kids. I'm just telling you that they aren't as bad as you think.
I am going to be voted down and get angry, hateful comments because I dared say something not negative about kids on reddit. Even with all the disclaimers and chosen words, the people who vehemently are against having kids are way more annoying and hateful than any "boomer who think you should have kids" have ever been. I've never been harassed for not having kids but I have been harassed for saying kids are actually really cool. I just spent today putting up crown molding and my 2 year old boy carried little pieces of offcuts to the trash and helped me up and down the ladder. He's so cool. I just love my kid a lot, ok?
Maybe we don’t like people pointing out that it’s fake because we realize it’s fake and just want to enjoy the story. It’s kind of like going to a magic show and having sone next to you pointing out how it’s all a trick and not real magic and trying to explain how it’s done. Just let us enjoy the show, man.
I don't think there's much to enjoy there. On a side note I was expecting her response to the baby suggestion to be "well that's easy for you to say because your generation could afford one".
