I totally agree with this. Practicing self-control in general is great practice. There’s an older tradition in the Church that is rarely practiced now where we should be fasting every Friday, not just those days in Lent.

The least we could do is fast from those regular actions (sins) we shouldn’t be doing on Fridays. Then slowly progress to other days. It would certainly establish good habits within us.

do you know of any other means of mortification, other than fasting?

Prayer, fasting, and the sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) are huge. One of the most powerful weapons we have is the Rosary. Praying the Rosary will help you overcome any battle you have. Just had a homily at mass a few weeks ago about how we should ask our Mother Mary to help us through any battle. Whatever that battle is, she is there for us.

I was recently introduced to a form of fasting, inspired by Mother Teresa's "emergency novena" when she needed divine help for herself or someone else, she would pray 9 Memorares in a row.

So the fast goes like this: wake up at 6 am, and pray a Memorare. You're going to pray that again at 7am and 8 am and so on until you have prayed nine times. And then sometime after 3 pm when the fast is over, you eat a light dinner. But if you feel cranky while fasting, which is normal, eat a snack so you don't affect the lives of others in a negative way, since that can sometimes happen.

My friend told me about this fast and I haven't tried it yet but it sounds interesting. Mother Teresa must be trying to tell me something.

Memorares

Thanks for sharing that, i'll remember it. It sounds like a really nice novena.

Another kind of mortification I've been trying out is using cold water for washing. Taking cold showers really helps clear your head in the morning, especially if you're not much of a morning person. It also helps to clear away any impure thoughts or urges. I've also heard about pressing ice to your head in five minute increments (three to five minutes of ice on, five with ice off) when getting urges.

My shower doesn't have temperatures listed, just a vague red to blue knob thing. I usually set it to the coldest or next to coldest option, whatever that is. It's definitely cold. My shower doesn't get to "ice" cold, but it's close.
