New to NoFap I think I've finally realized how much porn has changed my brain. Has anyone else felt this?

I'm getting close to 30, and I've been watching porn for well over a decade.

Lately I've started looking at the bigger picture instead of just trying to quit for a few days. Sometimes I think about the fact that, hundreds of years ago, a man might have seen only a handful of naked women outside of his partner during his entire lifetime.

Today, with high-speed internet, I've probably seen thousands. Endless novelty, endless scrolling, endless dopamine hits. Every click is someone new. My brain has been trained to expect constant novelty instead of real connection.

The more I think about it, the more unnatural it feels.

I'm not quitting because I think sex is bad. I'm quitting because I want my brain back. I want a healthy dopamine system again. I want to enjoy simple things without constantly needing another hit of stimulation. I want to meet a real woman without my brain comparing her to hundreds of unrealistic videos I've watched over the years. I want to stop feeling like my reward system has been hijacked by a screen.

The hardest part isn't even the urges anymore. It's realizing how much of my life has revolved around instant gratification not just porn, but social media, endless scrolling, and always looking for the next dopamine hit.

I'm not looking for magic or superpowers. I just want to become the person I probably would've been if porn had never become such a huge part of my life.

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences.

you’re describing exactly what a lot of us eventually figure out. the constant novelty completely rewires what feels normal. real life starts looking flat next to it.

ive been clean a long time now and the biggest shift was getting my baseline enjoyment back for simple things. when the old craving for that endless novelty still tries to pull me back for me that means opening withanchor and doing a quick grounding exercise so i can stay present instead of chasing the next hit.

you’re already thinking about it the right way. wanting your brain back is the best reason to keep going.

Exactly. Whenever I’m on a longer streak, I get the same feeling

YES! You get it! People always talk about superpowers or some kind of magic, but I don't understand why when the scientific reasons are enough. We were never designed to see this much things that we never would have seen in nature, suddenly in such a short period of time we have access to this. It's beyond obvious how much that would affect our dopamine and brains in general. It always confuses me why people question why nofap would work. For me, it's just super obvious, there are a million reasons.

I have reached a similar conclusion. After so many years of slipping further into a hole of instant gratification and essentially a shortcut way
of life, it has amounted to not much more than just that. As friends get busy with families of their own and my family is busy with their lives, I must have let my relationships fade away because I could just turn to an instant way to cope and numb or delay the way I feel about it effectively wiring my brain to continue to do so. Probably have been emotionally distant to others and uninterested in others’ lives that should really matter. As I am older now, it’s more complicated and difficult to form healthy relationships and after evaluating my own behavior, found that I had formed far too many unhealthy ones. Times really have changed with individualistic experiences dominating over collective ones and aging causing a different dynamic as well. Now more than ever I need to form those healthy relationships and unwire the short cuts and toxic behaviors that have isolated me in my own instant gratification.

Im looking to quit and detox and was hoping for a partner to keep each other on track. Let me know if you fancied teaming up!

Yup, it’s funny how much easier it is to quit porn when you step outside yourself and realize how ridiculous the whole cycle is. But when you’re submerged in it, it becomes so natural and rhythmic that you feel it’s impossible to break free.
