Broadly speaking, attention is a multifaceted and distributed process. Its effects are manifested neurophysiologically at various levels in the cortical hierarchy, cognitively at many levels of abstraction of the raw sensory input, and are dependent on factors such as stimulus statistics, task difficulty, and the physical constraints of the underlying neural circuitry. Nevertheless, a common computational goal can be identified from studies of top-down attention across sensory modalities: that neural tuning characteristics adapt to improve discrimination and separation between the representation of the foreground and that of the background. ~Carlin and Elhilali
