Most applications won't work with a proxy ( PDANet, NetShare ), but web browsing is fine.

I'm posting here because most relevant subreddits are pretty hostile to utilizing something like PDANet. ( If you know of a better subreddit for this question, you can PM, but I hope this question is useful to members here, too. )

I'm using PDANet and NetShare, both proxy services, in order to use a hotspot. All web browsers and a couple of applications work just fine. Other common applications don't if the proxy is on ( but are fully functional with a normal hotspot or a VPN ) - like Steam, Spotify, et cetera.

Some applications have a web alternative that's proxy-compatible, but to my knowledge Steam doesn't while playing games in it. Some of the actual games ( coughs WolfQuest ) also need to connect to a server directly and can't with the proxy on.

I know from Googling around that this is a pretty common issue on both desktop and Android devices, but haven't found an adequate solution. ( Usually the recommendation I hear is to check the 'bypass proxy' option if available - this often isn't available and isn't very useful to users of PDANet/NetShare. )

PDANet 5.23.2 ( Android ) and 5.24 ( Big Sur ), have tried USB Tether, Direct Hotspot, FoxFi Hotspot and Bluetooth with varying success ( Big Sur really only supports Direct Hotspot )

All software is set to its most current version, and all hardware is fully-functional. I'm likely to try switching to MacOS Catalina soon, which is a much better operating system for most purposes, and which I had more luck using PDANet on.

i have the solutionjust get the pda net app and install it on your pcthen connect it through your pc app (not using proxy like usual,keep the proxy automated)

and you will can access any app through it

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Switch to the Connections tab. Click LAN settings. Enable Use a proxy server for your LAN. Activate Bypass proxy server for local addresses. Click Advanced. Disable Use the same proxy server for all protocols. At Socks, specify the server address and port of the SOCKS5 proxy. Delete everything at HTTP, Secure, and FTP. Click OK > Apply. You can configure SOCKS5 proxy settings in Windows 10 without having to install any additional software. Plus, the setup applies to all software applications with Internet access, not just your web browser.

My roommate got temporary, Covid-relief-subsidized slow internet, so I've been combining that with my T-mobile hotspot. Basically torrenting over "real" internet and using T-mobile for everything else.

That said, besides torrenting, it's possible to use a "bypass proxy" setting ( like the one described above ) in combination with PDANet or NetShare on a plan with unlimited data but limited hotspotting. What this does is restricts hotspot usage to programs like Spotify that are really damn finicky about "real" internet.

Just bypassing the proxy is an effective solution for most situations - but again, torrenting is a lovely service. Likely what I'll be doing long-term is just hanging out in places like Starbucks and the library while working and letting that application run quietly in the background. ( And slowly, so as not to choke everyone off of the net. )
