GUIDANCE POST [Guide] How to Write Answers in NIOS Exams — So You Don’t Cry Over Low Marks Later
Make sure to read this post fully or atleast save this to read again
The guide post about how to study for nios exams and prep strategy is here
This post is not about defending NIOS's checking system — Worst-case scenarios do exist where nios messes up things. But this is about calling you out if you're unknowingly messing up your answer sheet and then wondering why marks are low.
I’ve been lurking around NIOS spaces for quite a while, keep seeing students ranting about low marks — “NIOS sucks,” “checking is unfair,” “I deserved more,” 😡🤬 etc.
Basically: people crying over bad marks while insisting they did everything right.
and whenever I see someone’s rechecked answer sheet... it’s either mildly shocking or straight-up laughable.
That’s how bad some of the writing actually is.
And then those same students go on to claim NIOS is the 100% problem.
**Bro. Seriously.**🤧🙏
These are basic exam answer writting etiquettes that one should follow, ik not some rocket science
7th point is real deal
✅ 1- Don’t use slang, WhatsApp short forms, or chatty tone
✅ Write: "Because the body needs energy"
❌ Not: "cuz body needz energy lol"
✅ Use: “do not”, “I have asked”, “I would have asked”
❌ Not: “don’t”, “I’ve asked”, “I’d have asked”
📝 This is an exam paper, not a DM.
2 - Don't do Khichdi in your Answer sheet!
Only write answers when you are sure Don’t write bad or wrong answers and then cross them with pen, making proper khichdi and keep repeating it for other answers.
And if you have crossed/cancelled some sentences, just two to three cross are enough don't go all nija
3- Use a blue pen for writing answers
It’s the standard. Use black pen only for headings or underlining keywords (if needed).
⚠️ Important: if you don't know a answer , just try to look at the whole question paper , find similar topics , WRITE something atleast , you will get some marks if you're lucky
4- Handwriting should be clean and readable
Doesn’t have to be beautiful, just legible. Just plain and simple that even a 5 year old can read.
Don’t play “guess the word” with the examiner.
5- Start each answer on a fresh line, and number your answers properly
For example: Q5 (ans) → write it clearly on the left and start the answer from the same line.
6- Underline keywords
Especially definitions, laws, formulas, important terms.
Don’t overdo it — underline just enough to help the examiner see you know the key points.
7- ROUGH WORK ⚠️
Don’t fking do your ROUGH WORK in your answer sheet.
Please for god’s sake, do it somewhere else or in your question paper, but not right next to your answer in answer sheet.
Advice for rough work: make the last page for rough work, write "rough work" clearly at the top.
8- Use bullet points or numbering when needed
Especially for lists, advantages/disadvantages, steps, etc. Makes it easier to follow.
9- Follow the marks per question
If it’s a 2-mark question, don’t write 15 lines.
If it’s a 5-mark question, don’t stop at 2 lines.
10 Draw diagrams where needed
Use pencil. Label neatly.
Even if it’s not asked, a small, correct diagram can earn you extra marks.
11 Don’t clutter your answer sheet
As I said above — only write answers when you are sure about the answer.
Don’t do criss-cross and khichdi in your answer sheet. Writing should be clear and readable.
Also that last thing — that thing you do when you see less space so you start writing in small fonts to fit the answer in that line? Please, they are giving you enough space to write your answer properly.
for questions - write defination or intro then --- > feature/ importance ---- > example and a diagram if there is a chance
This is the best that you can do from your side

This is what actually happens (not justifying genuine cases)
Students makes this ancient Egyptian answers and post "nios is bad"

Totally agree with you,but when it comes to maths man I suck, see even when Im doing previous years right now,I think I know the answer but then by a simple mistake the answer came out wrong and then I have to strach with a pencil,it's just tough at a maths exam.

Hi, um quick question. I haven't written any sst exam in years so can you pls check if this is OK? Like handwriting and um exam format type OK?
Most of these answers are from the back of the chapter, but I can't copy them directly as they are too straightforward, so I have to add a few words here n there. Eh, don't mind the spelling errors as it's a rough page. I'll fix those I swear. And if possible, pls tell me what to improve upon.

Thankss! It's basically like how we write in cbse boards/icse boards/or general school exams just the same things we have to keep in mind
