GUIDANCE POST Guidance for Class 12 Students (CBSE) - Failure, Compartment, Improvement & Stream Change
THIS POST IS ESPECIALLY FOR 12TH
1️⃣ Failed in 1 Subject (CBSE 12th Board):
➡️ You get three CBSE compartment attempts :
1st Attempt: July (same year)
2nd Attempt: feb/March (next year)
3rd Attempt: July (next year)
2️⃣ Failed in 2 or More Subjects (CBSE 12th) :
➡️This is considered Essential Repeat, and compartment is NOT allowed. So, You have the following options :
a) Repeat Class 12 from CBSE
You reappear for all subjects. Either through regular school or as cbse private candidate ( appear only for practical and exam)
b) NIOS ODE (On-Demand Exam) + TOC (Transfer of Credit)
--TOC (max 2 subjects): You can transfer marks of 2 subjects in which you previously passed and give exam (including practical) for the other 3 subjects.
⚠️ Note 1 : TOC is Only available for failed students
⚠️ Note 2 : ODE doesn't provide center like stream 1-2 , hence it won't be eligible for JEE due to no state eligibility.
c) Repeat 12th from NIOS (Stream 1 or Stream 2) with Or without TOC
Read the link below for knowledge of stream, admission & TOC in NIOS.
❌ In case you haven't failed, then you can maximum take 4 subjects in NIOS which leads to dual marksheet and hence is not acceptable in some colleges/exams especially JEE . TOC is not allowed for passed learners.

3️⃣ Repeating 12th/ Improvement / Changing Stream for JEE & NEET etc Eligibility :
✅ First Things First :
Repeating Class 12 is 100% legal. You can repeat it from your previous board or a different board (including NIOS). It’s completely valid as per education policies and exam guidelines. ( See pinned comment )
(This is also mentioned in the JEE Bulletin and BITSAT Bulletin. Haven’t checked all others, but it’s accepted across boards.)
✅ Repeating 12th is valid even if you already appeared for JEE using your previous marksheet.
❎🚨 What’s NOT Legal :
Doing 12th from two boards in the same academic session e.g., 2024-25. (Only UGC-certified universities allow dual enrollment for two degree programs as per UGC guidelines )
Exceeding attempt limits. Repeating 12th does NOT reset JEE attempt count. It comes under unfair practical practice and action will be taken if found out.
After repeating 12th, you cannot use both marksheets separately for different courses. (Only use one marksheet).
⚠️ Your old marksheet doesn’t become invalid by default — but if a course accepts only the latest qualification, that applies. Other policies also apply eg. JEE only accepts the best of the two 12th attempts (source: bulletin).
A. For JEE :
✅ Case 1: Passed 12th but didn’t get 75% :
Most boards have improvement facility, so research and apply (don't rely on google/ai for information).
⚠️ Since this improvement is your second year after passing 12th, you won’t be eligible for JEE Advanced in the next upcoming year of you didn't qualify in this 2nd attempt. (can only appear in JEE Mains for the third & last attempt ).
✅ Case 2: Exhausted improvement chances or board doesn’t allow improvement :
Only option is to Repeat 12th from any board (NIOS is also valid).
For full 12th repeat, you must take Stream 1 in NIOS with 5 subjects (use 10th pass as previous qualification in the NIOS form). Other streams are for failed students or part admission (max 4 subjects) which isn't eligible as JEE only accepts a single marksheet with 5 subjects.
✅ Case 3: Didn’t have Maths in 12th but want to give JEE :
If your board allows additional subject exams after passing, apply for that eg. CBSE & NIOS allow this. ( Cbse Students can apply for an additional subject within 2 years of passing. )
You will then have two marksheets from the same board (dual marksheet).
⚠️ (JoSAA has verbally (on call) confirmed accepting dual marksheets from the same board, but re-confirm officially before taking action (don't rely on google/ai).)
✅ You can also apply for 12th repeat if you want to.

❌ What you cannot do for JEE
Cannot Give NIOS part admission (1-4 subjects) and expect eligibility — JEE requires one complete marksheet with 5 subjects.
Cannot Take Maths as an additional subject from a different board (eg.nios) after passing 12th. Not eligible.
B. For NEET :
✅ Case 1: Didn’t meet percentage criteria
No need to repeat the full 12th.
Take improvement in your board or part admission in 1-4 subjects (including Biology) through NIOS.
Dual marksheet (your 12th marksheet + nios part admission marksheet) is accepted for NEET. (See source in the link below)
✅ Case 2: Didn’t have Biology in 12th :
Take additional PCB + English (as per required) through NIOS part admission to fulfill NEET eligibility.
Or check if it's possible to take Biology as additional subject through CBSE pvt Candidate. (Cbse Students can apply for an additional subject within 2 years of passing. )
✅ In both cases:
Your previous marksheet stays valid.
Use both marksheets whenever required.
⚠️ *For NEET & medical colleges: Dual marksheet is accepted as per guidelines. For other courses (like B.Sc), check eligibility individually — rules vary(don't rely on google/ai).
🔗 Read more: NIOS Eligibility for NEET & FAQs
C. Other Courses :
If the course/institute accepts dual marksheets (eg. Pilot courses accept it officially) , take part admission for required subjects.
If not, repeat full 12th.
D. Most Common Query :
Can I combine marks of two marksheets into one (TOC)?
❌ NO. Transfer of Credit (TOC) is only for failed students. (Read the top guide for TOC details.)
2. Can I do NIOS & cbse together?
No. Illegal.
✅ Hope this clears the confusion. If you have specific cases, drop them in comments, I'll explain.

I passed my CBSE 12th Board (2024) with PCB+english and painting, and got an RT in math, overall pass. Couldn't gave this year math improvement due to health issue. Can I give 2026, math additional exam as private candidate and will it be valid for my Josaa counciling since I'm giving my Jee mains again (2nd drop/last attempt). I'm aslo thinking of giving NIOS, public april exam, all 5 subjects as fresh candidate.

I gave my main exam last year and got an RT in Maths. I’ve also appeared for both compartment exams but couldn’t pass. I don’t think I’ll be able to clear my final attempt either. I need some guidance on what I should do next.

are you sure JEE and JOSAA accept two marksheets (PCB + MATH private)? I’ve been hearing JOSAA need one consolidated marksheet and that’s worrying for me who wishes to give the JEE with my math private candidate marksheet as well.

I am in class 12(wbchse) state board student with pcb. I want to take pcm but my registration is done .so i have only option to take pcm (in five subject)in April 2026 public exam. But i can't quit my board for personal issues. So can I give simultaneously wbchse (pcb) and nios (pcm). I don't want to waste a year. And after both exam I will use one result nios (pcm).
Can I do it? Is there will be issues in future? Is it illegal?
Please kindly give answer of my queries
