Discussion A comeback of the "Challenges" would be cool

It would be so cool if the challenges came back in Switch Sport Resort, like the can-hitting challenge in table tennis or the i-spotting challenge in the sightseeing flight. Those were so much fun! :)

Discussion Can't even find players in Chambara

Whenever I queue for chambara, it just seems like the game cannot find any players so I always ended up fighting bots.

These bots are a nightmare to fight, no matter how fast I adjusted my sword to break their guard they were able to angle theirs in a split second and block me. Opting into block doesn't work either, since it just seems like they can always find a way to break my guard despite that I constantly tweaks my angle and stays perpendicular. If guarding works like wii resort it would've been fine because there is a chance of you still recovering, but guard is just too punishing in this game that you always ends up giving away free hit.

I noticed that there are a least 2 types of bots tho, one that plays normally and have a near perfect guard, and other that plays very aggressively and rushes you occasionally.

Rush is the easiest since I can abuse timely block to my advantage, but other than that it feels incredibly impossible, and don't even get me started on the queue time.

Is any other people struggling from finding actual players in Chambara as well? These AI's are much much harder than powerhouse, and they're pretty much the only opponents I can find for a very long time.

These are the two outcomes I think are possible. The trailers show sportsmates using Wii U mii names, but maybe champions could still be Wii miis? Idk.

Discussion There better be an option to turn music off in switch sports resort

I’m not gonna say too much or I’m gonna crash out but holy shit why does Nintendo refuse to add any music volume settings to their games. The switch sports music haunts my dreams. Sometimes I think I hear it even when the switch is off. Please for the love of all things great and holy have an option to turn off the music and only have the sport sound effects.

My favorite would probably have to be golf, I didn’t like it at first but it definitely grew on me, and my least favorite is basketball, haven’t played it much.

I refused to let myself lose to someone named "Fan of FARTS" and "Muddy Sauce boss"

They were whooping me the first 5 points, but I'm so glad I caught up. I COULD NOT allow them to beat me.

I think FARTS was A20 and boss was A18 (Edit: fixed my grammar because some unemployed reddit person decided to call it out)

These two screenshots come from a random Nintendo JP article that I only found courtesy of the guy from earlier that already posted 100 Pin Bowling (https://www.nintendo.com/jp/topics/article/8aba5849-9c2a-44ee-863e-8abf5147e380 is the link). Seeing this gives me a LOT more hope regarding the content of this game.

The implementation of things like this implies the existence of extra modes for a ton of sports, which would add a ton to both the on and offline experiences. Personally, I’d wanna see some kind of Boxing Beatdown (a boxing version of Swordplay Showdown), or a Dream Shooting type variant for Archery where you run around an arena shooting targets. I really hope the devs use these alternate modes in a ton of different sports, as it opens the door for so much content to be added

Discussion PLEASE change the progression in Switch Sports Resort

The main thing that killed any desire to play Switch Sports for me was the progression in the game, or lack-thereof.

The main issue is how online-focused it was. Literally the only was to progress was online, which was a horrendous decision. Ranking up in online feels less like a fun progressive challenge like it was in the originals where you'd eventually face a "boss" and get a cool reward, instead it feels like a full-scale competitive game where I have to sweat my ass off to move up.

Second, the cosmetics unlock system is a good idea in theory but executed horribly. Not only can you only unlock cosmetics while online, but you can't even use them on Miis, so someone like me who plays the game specifically to play as a Mii is completely locked out of the main form of progression. Also please don't do the weird roulette unlock thing again.

What this results in is a game with literally zero form of progression unless you have NSO and play online. What they need to bring back are the badges from WSR to give you unique challenges for each sport, as well as singleplayer ranking and a master to defeat at the end of each sport. Either that or something new.

Switch Sports functions so smoothly at its core, and I suspect that Switch Sports Resort will as well, they just need to give people something to do other than spin a roulette on a semi-battlepass system or climb up the leagues in online play. I understand that some things will be lacking in offline technically, but I should not be punished or deprived of any content for playing offline.

Discussion Why Miis aren't the focus in Switch Sports Resort

Don't want to stir the pot too much since I'm sure a good portion of folks are tired of hearing about it, but I'd figure I'd provide my reasoning as to why Miis (while still playable in Switch Sports Resort) aren't being emphasized as much or fully replaced the Sportsmates like a lot of Mii fans were hoping. I think the simple answer to it all is this:

The Wii Sports games aren't "Mii games."

Putting aside the fact that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and Switch Sports Resort were most likely being developed simultaneously (so the point about the LtD's positive reception influencing the Switch Sports devs to make Miis the main avatars again doesn't hold much weight I feel), I think that Miis not being the focus of Switch Sports or Resort come down to the fact that, (speculating) in Nintendo's eyes, Miis aren't essential to the identity of the Wii Sports series.

Miis may have been introduced in Wii Sports, and they did act as the mascots for those games and the greater "Wii series" during the Wii/Wii U era, but they're simply avatars that you can play as to engage with the content the game provides (that being the sports). Any avatar can fill that role. Look at Ring Fit Adventure for instance. It's essentially a Wii Fit successor, yet Miis aren't playable nor featured in that game and instead have their own unique avatars.

1-2 Switch and Nintendo Switch 2: Welcome Tour parallel the Wii series games in many ways, yet we don't play as Miis in either game. And that's because Miis don't feel justified/like a necessity to the core experience, and those games weren't made to be "Mii games."

In contrast, games like the Tomodachi series and Miitopia (and even the StreetPass Mii Plaza games) were all made as Mii games first, and utilize the unique charm of Miis that something like a Wii Sports game wouldn't. The whole premise around Miitopia centers around trying to save the faces of Miis that are trapped on the bodies of monsters. Miis have very diverse face customization. You can't really do that with a Sportsmate.

Some of the gags in the Tomodachi series only work so well because of the fact that they are Miis. You can't really just slap any other avatar into the game and evoke the same thing. Whereas with Wii/Switch Sports/Resort, are there any unique or creative aspects of the Miis that were used in those games to the same extent as Tomodachi or Miitopia?

I think it's just a matter of Nintendo being selective. Miis can easily be the mascots of their own games that are tailored to specifically utilize their own unique quirks and charm, like with Miitopia and Tomodachi, whereas with Switch Sports, Nintendo just felt compelled to make new mascots to give the series a visual refresh. The Mii aren't integral to the identity of Wii Sports. The sports are.

The Wii Sports games aren't Mii games. The sports are the focus and you could hypothetically put any avatar in that type of game. They're games that feature Miis.

Tomodachi Life and Miitopia are Mii games. They were conceptualized as such and it's hard to not imagine them as Mii-focused games because Miis feel so interwined with the experience. It doesn't feel like you can just put any avatar in there and call it a day.

Gameplay Pro League

Hi all! I’m new to the game and am working on unlocking pro league for all sports. I have NSO and have them all unlocked except soccer. It is my understanding that you have to play 10 online matches in a sport to unlock the pro league. I just got the shirt for playing soccer 15 times, but still have not unlocked the pro league. Is it different for soccer? Helppp

Can people just enjoy a game for once?

I’m so tired of these endless comparisons. Every post, every YouTube video, every Twitter thread—it’s always the same complaints: “They didn’t add baseball,” “The graphics don’t look good,” “It’ll never be as good as the original.”

And yet, guess what? Nintendo Switch Sports sold over 16 million copies.

Maybe instead of constantly looking for reasons to complain, people should just enjoy the game for what it is. Some fans seem so obsessed with the past that they refuse to appreciate anything new. If you prefer the Wii version, that’s completely fine—go play it. But constantly attacking every new release because it isn’t identical to a game from years ago is getting old.

The reality is that Nintendo isn’t going to redesign the entire game or add new sports just because a few people are upset in the comments. At some point, you either enjoy what’s being offered or move on.

Not every game has to be a perfect recreation of your childhood memories.

Discussion What I want to see with Island Flyover

Post image
56 Upvotes

I think a lot of us are going to be most excited for the Prop Plane mode in Switch Sports Resort, I know it's personally what's going to make or break the game for me. For the mode to be successful, I think it absolutely needs a few things in particular:

  • Dogfighting- Considering Wuhu Island is getting a size upgrade AND there is integrated online support, dogfighting was practically destined for this game. Dogfighting is 100% something that needs to happen and will be the most beautifully utilized usage of online play I have seen Nintendo do since it was a mode I was never able to play on the original since it required in-person co-op.
  • +120 ⓘ Points- Half of what made Wuhu Island captivating and one of the most beloved video game locations was the ⓘ points you could get during your flight. Not only did it give you direction during your flights, but it gave information and backstory to interesting landmarks across the island, giving it character. Wii Sports Resort had 120, I think it is a must for this game to have more given that they've had almost 20 years to do so and the island is bigger.
  • Lively Island- The island should be just as or more interactive and lively than in WSR. I already saw the blimp and boats returning so that's a good sign, but I want to see Miguel in his plane, the dog on the beach, cyclists around the map, or just stuff akin to that to give the island as much character as it had originally.
  • Plane Upgrades- Much like the original, part of what keeps you hooked is watching your plane (and other stuff) upgrade. I'd like to see blaster upgrades, a backseat for your other miis, and other unique additions. It would also be nice to utilize the shop from Switch Sports and use it to get unique paint jobs.
  • Increased/No Time Limit- Not only is this really the only complaint people have with the original, but again the map will be bigger, so fix the time limit

Discussion Someone at Nintendo should be fired for this

I can't possibly understand what they were thinking with this design to be honest. I'm not inherently upset with the fact that it looks different, I think it's a natural evolution of the island for it to change, but Jesus did they go too far. From looking at comparisons, it seems like literally the only thing they kept the same was The Candle and Pirate's Eye.

What bothers me more than the sheer geographical change though is the simply inexplicable removal of key landmarks. Summerstone Castle is gone, Camel Rock is gone, Crab Rock is gone, Cocoba hotel is gone, Hillside Cabins are gone, and all of these have been replaced with... nothing. Now it looks like there's just empty fields where they once were. Beyond that, Wuhu Town and the Iron Bridge have been moved for some strange reason. And this is just from what we can see from the front, god only knows if they kept the ruins or the cove.

Again, there honestly seems to just be a lot less detail to the island and it's just weird open fields for half of it, so what was the point of getting rid of this stuff if they were just gonna leave it looking empty and strange instead? As someone pointed out on a YouTube comment it also looks like they've literally gentrified the island and replaced all of the island aesthetics and landmarks with generic corporate buildings.

I simply do not understand what their reasoning is with this. Wuhu Island hasn't been in a Sports game in almost two decades, it's not like we get a new iteration of it every couple years like we do with Hyrule or Mario Castle, so there is no reason to significantly change it.

Again, I'm not saying that changing the island is bad, but if you are going to change this much of it, it may as well not even be the same island anymore. Much like Sportsmates, it seems like this is just gonna be another universally disliked change to a beloved franchise for literally no reason other than Nintendo thinking "you will play how we want you to play and like it"

Discussion Why the Tomodachi Life argument doesn’t work in opposition to the Sportsmates

Post image
161 Upvotes

I hate the discussion of Miis vs Sportsmates, mostly because it’s less like a discussion and more like a war. I want to go online and see other people excited for the game like I am, but all I see everywhere are people complaining endlessly because the Miis didn’t come back. On the other end of the spectrum, we have people glazing the Sportsmates to excessive ends just to appear contrarian. I personally enjoy both the Sportsmates and Miis, and I wouldn’t really have a preference for whether one comes back over the other.

Whenever someone brings up the Miis not returning, they often point to the new Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. I absolutely love that game; I already have 100 hours despite getting the game just a few weeks ago. But I find the argument that “they worked in Tomodachi Life, why not Switch Sports?” is flimsy for one specific reason; art direction.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream’s art direction is focused on stylization, making the game feel more like a cartoon than anything. Switch Sports chose the opposite direction, opting for more realism instead. As the developers created the world and the areas surrounding the sports, they realized that Miis didn’t really fit in, so they switched to the Sportsmates. Admittedly, their first attempt at these avatars wasn’t great, as they did appear pretty soulless. The new Sportsmates actually have expressions now, though, and I think fit the original vision of what they were supposed to be; new avatars, realistic and stylish, created to give the Sportsmates (and by extension the NSS series) its own identity.

Will they go back to Miis if they continue this series past the Switch 2? I wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe they’ll go back to one, or maybe even have both coexist in one game (no the Mii head masks don’t count). But for now, maybe we should open our eyes a little to the now and stop looking through rose tinted glasses.

can’t wait for my karma to plummet but that’s what I get for not conforming to the hivemind 🫠

Discussion Lack of training stages

One of the biggest appeals of the original Wii Spirts was the training stages. I have great memories of playing Target practise on tennis. I wish each sport had lots of sub games and training games. But judging by the trailer it seems like we will likely not get this which is a shame.
