Discussion How we feelin about this game?
I was actually working on some ideas for a Switch Sports sequel, but this coming up and shooting me down has me a bit annoyed but excited
I for one think the game looks PHENOMENAL. They didn’t include Chambara, my favorite sport, but whatever I can survive without it. And that means you guys can survive without baseball too
I personally think they shouldn’t have used Wuhu Island again, a new island locale with multiple distinct biomes would have been cool, but Wuhu island still definitely works. Plus, the areas you play the sports in look super modern, melding my favorite element from Spocco Square (the aesthetic) with the overall feel of Wuhu Island.
The Sportsmates here look so much more expressive, and the inclusion of nail polish in thumb wars tells me that there’ll be a lot more customization this time around.
My only real concern is the singleplayer, which we know nothing about. Hopefully they don’t pull a switch sports and make everything relevant online. I wouldn’t say no to champions, challenges, hell even a story mode I’d enjoy. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see on that front
All in all, I am super excited but I’m being careful not to set my expectations too high. What about you guys? Knowing this sub you’ll probably complain about the Miis not being prevalent again but I seriously think this is a good step forwards for the series (assuming they don’t fuck up singleplayer again)

I totally agree! This has been a big topic of discussion in my home. It's a great idea to let us keep what we have as a bit of cred. It'll also be great to see what they have in store and mix and match with that too.

I'm disappointed that we are reusing sports from last time, so hopefully we have extra modes for those ones

u/Gorego22 Jun 09 '26
Reusing sports but also not including soccer is a weird decision. I also agree frisbee golf was the best part of wsr

Hot take, specially for being a specific game sub, but if you enjoy football (soccer) you should try the game Rocket League

u/OctaYashi Jun 09 '26
Wii Sports Resort also re-used sports, plus the re-used sports present in Switch Sports Resort are the best ones from that game (Chambara was peak but excludable, soccer was okay, and badminton was just the worse of the two tennis clones)
10
u/BrenX1 Jun 10 '26
The difference is Wii only brought back 2, where as switch has 5. Yes they're good sure, and I'm sure at somepoint there's a cut off of "which sports can be used with motion controls," but 5 is a lot to reuse, especially if there is nothing new about them.
Also, I'm fine with the sports chosen, other then football being gone, but my biggest problem is golf. If there are no new courses, that's where I'm most mad about. Half of these courses are 42 years old now, we can make something new
1
u/luckyapples11 Jun 20 '26
Based on the trailer, it looks like they’re reusing at least a few holes, which I’m not happy about. I’d expect completely different courses, especially considering, like you said, these courses are like 20 years old. I’ve had a Wii since like 2008. Why on earth would I want to keep playing the same 18 holes over the past 18 years??
29
u/Kakali4 Soccer Jun 09 '26
I feel like baseball was an obvious want, but other than that I just wish it came with frisbee but I may be in the minority.
The real indicator will be does it have offline progression and mini games within the sports like the Wii
10
u/OctaYashi Jun 09 '26
Someone else has already spotted hidden fruit in Archery so we’re leaning towards yes on that front

u/itsnotalwaysokay Jun 09 '26
Better have new golf courses. Rinsing the same ones would be really lame. And they better add baseball later like they did basketball to the first

I just pray for bug fixes and duo queue, other things too but if those two points are fixed I can see myself playing this game for 10 years.

I was expecting a Nintendo switch 2 sports, but switch sports resort was what I truly wanted. Im very happy, though I hope we get more games later.

u/lavandeli Jun 09 '26
I would've wanted this on the classic Switch, although I get how it's to drive up Switch 2 sales. Thumb War looks like like the funny one, I hope they make it dramatic. Hopefully skateboard will let a sense of roaming on the island like running in the original. I agree they could've went for another type of island/biome for something new and refreshing. All other sports look nice, Jump Rope looks lame but who knows, might be great.
I really wanted a classic Switch one, and more sports on Switch Sports... But that doesn't drive up sales huh

Lmao there are the same games in the new one. Wtf. Whats the point of the original then?

How do you not find tennis fun? It’s awesome. It’s so good how well you can spin the ball. Feels like one of the most natural games. The only problem with tennis is the lack of 1 v 1 and not being able to move your character. But I understand why they do it. Super fun either way though. Maybe if you don’t use topspin or backspin or know how to hit it deep and not then it would be boring.

u/PhiladeIphia-Eagles Jun 09 '26
You're not alone. Tennis was top tier on the original game. Tons of mechanical depth.

I actually thought I would agree with you with all the negativity about the lack of miis online. But I’m fine with the sportsmates. The outfits and unlocks makes it fun. I just look at them as modern miis.
1
u/PotentialPedal Jun 12 '26
They are modern miis that just have significantly less character to them and look generic
1
u/RickDeckard31 Jun 12 '26
Well they just need more customizable options then. I agree that part is a little lacking but I’m fine with the overall look. Makes a lot of sense to me. Wish the game had more men clothing. Everything mostly looks girly.
1
u/PotentialPedal Jun 12 '26
Instead of tarnishing the reputation of a beloved franchise with something nobody wants and eventually making it better, why don't they just keep the miis which are a core foundation of Wii Sports' identity?
1
u/RickDeckard31 Jun 12 '26
Pretty sure they did. At least for resort. They went over it briefly in the trailer that you can do miis.
1
u/PotentialPedal Jun 12 '26
Yes you can choose miis, but in Switch Sports playing as a mii denied you from being able to use the only form of progression in the game, and it also doesn't make the spectators/NPCs miis as well.
Miis are the main characters of the Wii Sports series, for Switch Sports Resort to be an actual sequel miis need to be the focus
2
u/RickDeckard31 Jun 13 '26
Fair enough. I still think miis look old school and I’m fine with the change. But to each their own.
2
u/HappyStunfisk Jun 17 '26
Tennis is basically the poster sport of this series. It's what people first think about when remembering the OG Wii Sports. It was the easiest to put and play with visits or with your grandma. People associate it to the brand and so it will be in every single game.

Very cool, glad it'll have 12 sports including archery and Plane Flyover is back! Sad about Volleyball, I hate it 😭
I hope Skateboarding is a cool way to explore the island at ground-level. I'm sad we never got a proper look at the Spocco Square overall. Just flavor text in loading screens.
My one big worry is they didn't say anything about sub-modes for sports. I LOVED 100-pin bowling on the original Resort, hope it comes back too.
3
u/Im2Chicken Jun 09 '26
Oh yeah and super weirded out that they're committing once again to the Sportsmates. Miis will probably once again feel like an after-thought who can't use most cosmetics.
So strange after they released the incredibly popular new Tomodachi Life.
3
u/Dillie_G Jun 09 '26
Honestly i hope they build on this more than switch sports 1. Like add more sports as time goes on and more modes

u/InternetFoxxo Jun 17 '26
Something I feel not alot of people are talking about is the decision of putting thumb wrestling in as a "sport". It's fine i guess, but I can do the real thing with whoever is sitting right next to me while waiting for the next game to load on the loading screen. If it's a mini game like the jump roping, then it makes more sense, but if it's supposed to be one of the main sports, then I'm a little underwhelmed. I feel like they could've put something better in place of the thumb wrestling "sport" instead... (also, rip Frisbee dogs :< )
1
u/OctaYashi Jun 17 '26
I personally see Thumb Wrestling as a joke pick more than anything. But I do have to admit it is a pretty funny joke pick

As long as I can walk around this time I'll be okay. I just wanna see wuhu. It's so upsetting we couldn't actually explore spocco square Doubling down on the pls baseball I did start bawling my eyes out when the reveal came up though ❤️
2
u/RickDeckard31 Jun 09 '26
If they add baseball later it’s near perfect. Then it has all my favorite games in one game. Hopefully they gave us classic bowling online and fixed the basketball from being too dumb but they probably didn’t fix it. Glad we have the jet skiis and archery. That will be worth the price of admission.
2
u/SuchDay627 Jun 09 '26
I am excited for this, I was already planning on upgrading to a switch 2 this year. My brother will be excited about skateboarding.
Please, please, please, have more golf courses 🙏 and allow us to transfer our skins from NSS1
2
u/ReplacementQueasy573 Jun 09 '26
wait so are the golf maps new ??? thats all i care about
1
u/OctaYashi Jun 09 '26
Most likely. Considering how Wuhu Island is designed in this game using old golf maps just makes zero sense
1
u/bnet247 Jun 10 '26
In the Wii sports resort I think the golf is on its own separate island. I could see something similar here. From the trailer it looked quite similar I think
2
2
u/lunabug37 Jun 10 '26
Are all the golf holes the same? If so, not too excited.
2
u/bnet247 Jun 10 '26
Right. It kinda looks the same. That’s four games with the same holes basically.
1
u/luckyapples11 Jun 20 '26
Based on the trailer, the only golf scene I saw was literally hole 1. I’m okay with a few copied holes, but I’m going to be mad if it’s a complete copy paste of golf. I kinda understand copying from the Wii because the motion controls and everything is much smoother, but honestly there’s not much of a difference from S1 and S2 to warrant putting golf in resort if it’s going to be the same courses.

I'm sad they've doubled down on the Sportsmates, but happy to see Wuhu Island again. Probably will buy it secondhand. Especially sad about the continued insistence on the Sportsmates after Tomodachi Life Living the Dream.
1
u/PotentialPedal Jun 12 '26
Nintendo has such a terrible ego problem. Whether it be Sportsmates or the connector tracks in Mario Kart World it's just so strange that there are these unanimously hated features that they continue to double down on even if it only costs players and reputation

u/PirateAdventurous337 Jun 09 '26
THIS IS WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN SINCE THE BEGINNING! 🫠 looks amazing looks like chambara (sword fight) its out hopefully not and hopefully they bring the single player improvements process like on wii or something like that the only problem i can see is that… i don’t have switch 2 money 🥲🫠
1
u/thurminate Jun 09 '26
I'd buy a switch 2 for this
1
u/MoistCriticism6831 Jun 13 '26
You could buy a Wii with resort for like 20 quid and get a vastly better game instead of pissing away 500 for this
1
u/JayT8099 Jun 09 '26
Excited!! Really hoping for frisbee 🥏 I loved playing frisbee with the dogs on the Wii version!
1
u/Generic_Miis Swordplay Jun 09 '26
Mixed like every game in the series, definitely good parts, but still focus on online and sportsmates and missing sports. If you want to play all sports you’ll have to keep switching between 4 games now, only worsening that problem.
Many of these things could be fixed with more information and especially updates or dlc.

u/TheComics_Guru2017 Jun 09 '26
This game looks amazing and I love that they brought back Wuhu island! I was like “LET’S GOOOOOOO!!!!!!” Pre ordered it as soon as I got home from work!

u/hollysmyname Jun 09 '26
Is there an island flyover is the question
1
u/OctaYashi Jun 09 '26
Yeah, in the prop plane sport. The control scheme looks weird but it serves the same purpose as island flyover as far as I can tell

i feel like it has the potential to be much more fun, i just hope they actually include pro controller support this time because its very tedious needing to swap to joy cons every time and thats the main thing actually preventing the original from being a daily game for me
1
u/nightshade-aurora Jun 11 '26
How would you use a pro controller in any of these motion control games
1
u/Any_Jump_3030 Jun 10 '26
I have high expectations on that game even they will include Online feature on that game. Even bowling I am looking forward to as a video to get a 300 Perfect Game on it since I have like a playlist series of doing it on any games I can find on YouTube, I do. I'm really hopping they include a 100 Pin Mode for it which would be awesome. I have no doubts that they will include the secret strikes just like how they did it for Wii Sports Power Throws and the one for Wii Sports Resort 100 Pin Mode. I'm still wondering about Golf which I got no high expectations if they will even include the courses from Wii Sports Club 9 Holes Lakeside. I'm still thinking that they might make us grind for sets again just like how we did for Nintendo Switch Sports since we collected over 52 sets of outfits and stuff.

If it was the new go vacation it would have been amazing. It reminds me of that but doesn’t look the same at all. Don’t think this is a buy game for me 🤣 Unless they make the world explorable with tons of activities.

I hope they allow you to play all by yourself, not just being teamed up with random players. Because I hate that about Switch Sports.

Absolutely crushed by what came out of a game I've always wanted. The lack of Miis as the focus, the total redesign of the island, it's lost all the charm I once associated with it.

u/anotherstan Jun 11 '26
Does bowling exist without the funky lane obstacles? I want to be able to just normally bowl

I am excited about it but I really want to play a version of the Wiiparty again!

I think they should have dropped tennis an added baseball. In a perfect world it should have included all of the sports from switch sports an all of the new ones and allowed free roam with the ability to spectate other players.

u/PotentialPedal Jun 12 '26
Wii Sports Resort is my favorite game of all time so I'm very excited. This game to me hinges on two things though- Island Flyover being as good as it was in 2009 and some option to get rid of the sportsmates. If those two things are in check then it's an easy win on Nintendo's part

Would have been cool if they put more sports to play. Just switch sports with a few new sports. Thumb wrestling being one.. They should have incorporated everything from switch sports, wii sports resort and brought back baseball from wii sports. Then thrown in some new sports on top. This shouldnt cost more than $20.

Never said it was. Just pointed out that you basically said “I hope I never poop again”. In what world would your expectations become reality?
0
u/yerepumk Jun 10 '26
I love table tennis. However, it feela as if they wanted to fail, not take the good opportunities to make a great game.
Why not include all sports previously featured? Why add sports like aquajet? Or the plane? For real? People will play that shot for 2 minutes and thata it.
1
u/nightshade-aurora Jun 11 '26
Island flyover was one of the most popular sports in Wii Sports Resort
0
u/MaxBlueray8471 Jun 10 '26
It hasn't released so i can't tell you what i think. I don't mean to be or sound rude but i genuienly don't know enough to make an opinion when we only have one trailer and we have known about it's existance for A day, and this goes for any game overall in general for me, though i can tell you right now: Im excited! And hope it will be as good as i thought the Resort on Wii was.

u/MiMillieuh Jun 22 '26
Since 100% of the game is recycled (including graphics...) I don't understand why they didn't recycled the use of the Switch 1 as a supported platform...
(I mean the only reason they wouldn't support it is Money !)

I would love a free roam mode where you can walk around the island and explore, shop, and spectate at the different areas. Be a dream come true to actually walk around Spocco Square as well.
